LightBoard
Overview
The LightBoard offers a fresh, engaging approach for instructors to present material to students. Suitable for in-person, hybrid, or online teaching, it enables educators to break down complex ideas or provide instructions before class sessions. Using fluorescent markers on an LED-lit glass panel, instructors create the effect of writing that appears to float in midair. During post-production, the video image is flipped so that the writing appears correct to viewers, giving the impression that the instructor is writing directly to the audience.
Additionally, images and other digital content can be layered onto the video, allowing instructors to enhance their presentations with creative visuals and interactive elements
How It Works
- Writing and Recording: The instructor writes or draws on one side of the glass while facing a camera positioned on the opposite side. This allows the instructor to maintain direct eye contact with students, unlike traditional whiteboards or chalkboards where the instructor often turns away.
- Image Reversal: Because the writing would appear backward to viewers, post-production techniques are used to flip the video image, making it look as though the instructor is writing directly toward the audience.
- Visual Enhancements: Images, slides, and other digital content can be superimposed onto the video, allowing instructors to interact with their own slides, underline or circle points, and even scroll through live content such as spreadsheets or code. This opens up significant creative possibilities for lesson delivery.
Best Practices
- Since the LightBoard has to be erased after each use, which takes some time, it works best for small chunks of lecture content.
- Your attire must not contain any visible logos or text. Since we reverse the image in post-production any visible logos or text on clothing will appear backwards.
- Your attire should be light in color so you do not disappear against the black backdrop. However, we advise against wearing white due to the lighting conditions.
- Avoid standing directly behind content while writing.
- Content presented must not be under copyright protections or permission must be granted from the copyright holder.
The LightBoard is a dynamic tool that brings a new dimension to instructional video creation. By allowing instructors to face their audience while writing and by enabling the integration of various digital content, it fosters a more engaging and effective learning experience for students across multiple teaching modalities.
