Undergraduate Graduation FAQs

Q: When will I receive specific information regarding participation in the commencement ceremony? A: The electronic reservation system for participating in the Spring 2020 commencement ceremony will open on Monday, March 30, 2020 and remain open until Friday, April 17, 2020. At that time, students eligible to participate in the Spring 2020 commencement will be able to signup to participate/walk the ceremony.You do not have to walk to receive your degree, but you MUST complete the electronic reservation in order to participate/walk in the ceremony and receive tickets for your guests.

Q: Where should my guests park? A: The following parking lots are opened to all guests on commencement day: B, C, D, E, I, J, L, and K. Lot A is reserved for guests with the credentials for ADA only. Please advise your guests that parking will be limited, and they should arrive early in order to allow adequate time to find a parking space. Q: How many tickets will each graduate receive for the ceremony? A: The number of tickets each graduate receives is determined by the number of students who elect to participate in the commencement ceremony. The exact number of tickets will be determined after the reservation system closes.

Q: What happens if I have more guests than tickets? A: The number of individuals permitted into the ceremony is strictly enforced. Only guests with tickets will be able to enter the ceremony, and they must do so before the processional begins. Guests without tickets and guests who arrive late are able to watch the commencement via a live video feed in room 272 of the University Center and in the ballroom of the Student Activities Center.

Q: Is there a commencement ceremony for summer graduates? A: Summer graduates are invited and encouraged to participate in the fall commencement ceremony in December.

Q: What does my $35.00 graduation application fee go toward? A: Your application fee covers administrative costs associated with the audit of your application as well as material costs for your diploma/certificate.

Q: Where do I obtain my cap and gown? A: The Loch Shop handles all cap and gown orders via https://clayton.shopoakhalli.com.

Q: What should I wear under my gown? A: Men should wear a white dress shirt (with collar), dark slacks, and dark (brown or black) dress shoes. Women may wear a dress or slacks. Many women prefer to wear a white dress shirt (with collar) under their gown for a more finished look. Pants or skirts should be a dark color worn with dark (brown or black) dress shoes. Please be aware that you will be standing for long periods of time, so you should wear shoes in which you can be comfortable.

Q: Will there be a rehearsal? A: No. You will be given information regarding the procession when you arrive at commencement.

Q: Where do I report the morning of commencement? A: The Registrar's Office will have a check-in station set up at the bottom of the stairs on the first floor of the University Center, in front of the Lakeside Dining Hall. All graduates who participate in the ceremony must check in prior to the beginning of the procession.

Q: Where is the ceremony held? A: The ceremony is held in the Athletics Center. Graduates will march from the University Center to the Athletics Center to begin the ceremony. Guests with tickets must be seated in the Athletics Center before the processional begins; guests will not be admitted late.

Q: Will you have a place to store my valuables (purse, phone, keys) during the ceremony? A: No. Please keep all valuables locked in your car or make arrangements to have your guests hold items for you during the ceremony.

Q: Are accommodations available for individuals with disabilities? A: Disability accommodations are available for graduates and guests upon request. Please contact the Office of Disability Resources at (678) 466-5445 for more information.

Q: Will I be able to purchase photographs? A: You will have an opportunity to purchase individual photographs from Village Photographers. You may visit their website or call 1-800-444-7427 for more information.

Q: I failed one of the classes that I needed to complete my degree. Can I participate in the ceremony? A: Generally, only students who have completed their degree requirements may participate in commencement. You will be eligible to participate once you meet all the requirements for your degree.

Q: I participated in the commencement ceremony; does this mean I am an official graduate of Clayton State University? A: No. Participation in the ceremony does not constitute degree completion. Degrees are awarded pending the final audit of your records conducted by the Registrar’s Office in the weeks following commencement. You will be notified via your CSU student email account and the USPS mail system when your degree has been awarded and your diploma is available for pickup.

Q: If I receive an incomplete grade in the semester I plan to graduate, will I still graduate during that semester? A: No. Your graduation date must be moved to a subsequent semester.

Q: If I need to change my graduation date, what should I do? A: Contact Thanh Dong via your CSU student email account. In your email, please include the date that you anticipate your degree requirements will be completed.
