GS icon Nationally Competitive Fellowships for Graduate Students Information Session

Graduate students are invited to learn about nationally competitive and prestigious fellowships. GSU fellowships adviser, Katrina Helz, will provide tips and insight into finding and applying for external funding in the form of fellowships including, but not limited to: Fulbright, Boren, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Ford and Southern Regional Education Board Fellowships. GS icon Public Scholarship: Designing Presentations for Maximum Impact

Wednesday, February 9 | 11:30 – 1:00

Whether you’re presenting a research paper at a conference or defending your research at your thesis/dissertation defense, drawing on basic visual communication principles will improve the delivery of your next research presentation. This workshop will help you plot your escape from the PowerPoint wasteland and develop engaging presentations with functional design, good flow, and meaningful graphics.

GS icon Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competitor Workshop: Preparing Your 3MT Presentation

Monday, February 7 | 2pm     and     Wednesday, February 9 | 12 pm

Ph.D. and Master's competitors are encouraged to attend this workshop to gain tips for preparing and practicing your presentation. A review of the rules, requirements, judging criteria and apply them to your presentation.

Ph.D. and Master's competitors are encouraged to schedule a one-on-one coaching session to ask questions, talk through, practice and get feedback on your three-minute talk.

This webinar is perfect for scholars who are looking to do more media work and want advice on how to prepare for interviews and build relationships with members of the media. Participants will learn how to respond when a journalist calls, communicate their research in a clear and effective manner, identify what reporters are looking for in interviews with scholars, maintain media relationships, and build on previous media work.

Writing can be tough. Setting aside blocks of time for writing can be a challenge. If you need some accountability and would like to accomplish your writing goals the Graduate Student Write-In may be just what you need!

Design your own schedule. Choose your day(s) and block(s) of time for each day AM (9am-1pm), PM (12pm-4pm) or Full-day (9am-4pm).

  • Record daily goals
  • Daily check-ins for accountability and to celebrate accomplished goals
  • Daily lunchtime presentations offering discussions about writing strategies and resources

Through a multidisciplinary graduate faculty panel, you will find out more about the ins and outs of the graduate school writing experience—from general writing issues graduate school, specific writing issues when formatting, and everything in between. Following the panel discussion, students will have an opportunity to get their questions answered by current graduate faculty and staff!

Six doctoral and Six master’s students selected from the preliminary round will advance to the final competition. Developed by the University of Queensland, the three-minute thesis competition celebrates the research conducted by master’s and PhD students. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

CS icon Graduate Student Career Workshop: “Is The System Flawed?” – A Guide for Educated Inexperience Workers

Wednesday, March 23rd | Time: 5pm – 6:30pm| Speaker: Antisha Walley, President of Make the Change, LLC

As individuals who graduate from universities or apply for their first job in recent years can attest to, something new – and alarming – has happened to entry-level jobs: they’ve disappeared! Most entry-level job listings require three or more years of experience, which most graduate students do not possess. So, how can postgraduate students gain employment with little to no experience after graduation? In this workshop graduate, students will learn strategies and tips to gain successful employment despite their lack of experience.

Antisha Walley is a CVE certified service-disabled veteran owned small business and human resources consultancy located in Austin, Texas. She has contributed more than 10 years consulting with leadership teams to identify, address and resolve workplace issues. An experienced workforce trainer, she has successfully trained military, public, and private sector employees on a variety of topics to include Workplace Diversity, Preventing Sexual Harassment and Discrimination, Interview Etiquette, Conducting Employment Investigations, and Unconscious Bias. She is an inspirational empowerment speaker who shares her experiences and life lessons to encourage others.

The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. Top finalists (6 Masters, 6 Ph.D.) compete for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and the People’s choice awards.

You have landed a job! But what do you do once you receive the offer? How do you negotiate a salary and non-monetary benefits that reflect your value without making yourself too expensive as a candidate? Or if you already have a job where you have proven your value, how do you negotiate for a raise? This workshop graduate students will learn strategies and tips to be an informed and effective advocate for themselves to get the compensation they feel they are worth. This workshop will be for ALL graduate students!

GS iconHow to Translate Your Research for a General Audience (NCFDD Featured Webinar)

Tuesday, April 19 | 2pm

This session will be focused on translating your research for a general audience online. I will discuss how to best utilize digital media strategies to bring your research to a wider audience. The webinar will include practical tips and insights from working in educational digital media. Topics covered will include: 1) Using online platforms and social media to spread the word about your work, 2) Creating videos, op-eds, articles, podcasts, etc. that entertain while educating, and 3) How to effectively write for a wide range of non-specialist viewers outside your area of expertise.

GS iconNational Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.  Application deadlines fall at the end of October.  Applicants must be a US citizen, national or permanent resident.

Graduate students are invited to learn about nationally competitive and prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. GSU Fellowships Adviser, Katrina Helz, will provide tips and insight into applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program, which provides funding for those wishing to travel overseas to conduct research, engage in academic study or teach English for up to one year.
