The Clayton State University Foundation has adopted programs and goals designed to go hand-in-hand with the mission of Clayton State University to cultivate an environment of engaged, experienced-based learning, enriched by active community service, that prepares students of diverse ages and backgrounds to succeed in their lives and careers.

Clayton State University seeks through responsible activities to encourage gifts from alumni, friends, faculty, staff, businesses, corporations, foundations, and others. It also carries the responsibility of managing those funds to ensure they are utilized according to the donors’ wishes and, when directed, invest them in a fiscally sound manner so as to build an endowment that will support the institution today and in the future.

Statement of Endowment Fund Management

Alice J. Smith Memorial Fund Established by the family of educator Alice J. Smith, this fund provides scholarships for teacher education and nursing students.  The fund also provides for the annual Alice J. Smith Awards in recognition of outstanding faculty and staff members.

Allan & Elizabeth Marshall Scholarship   Faculty Emeritus and Trustee Elizabeth Hulsey Marshall, along with her late husband Allan, created this endowment to award annual scholarships to students in the School of Arts & Sciences. 

Atlanta Air Cargo Association Scholarship Established to provide scholarships to School of Business students who are concentrating in logistics and supply chain management.

Benita Moore BAS Scholarship   Established by her colleagues in honor of her retirement from Clayton State University.

Billy R. Nail Math Scholarship   Established by family, friends and colleagues in honor and memory of Dr. Billy “Buddy” Nail who taught mathematics at Clayton State University for numerous years.  

Bobby Johnson Scholarship   Created through a bequest from Ms. Bobby Johnson, this scholarship is designated for an Eagle Scout who wished to attend Clayton State University.

Booker T. Izell Scholarship   Initiated by colleagues of Booker Izell at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, supplemented by Cox Enterprises, and fulfilled by Booker and Birdie Izell, this scholarship endowment provides scholarships to School of Business students.

Charles E. Wells Memorial Scholarship   Began by NationsBank in recognition of the contribution made by Charles Wells through his 42 years of service to the banking industry in our community.

Clayton State Retirees Association Scholarship   Established by retired faculty and staff of Clayton State University as the first scholarship to assist students in the Master’s Degree programs at the University.

Clayton State Women’s Forum Scholarship   Established by the women faculty and staff members at Clayton State University to provide financial support to female students to assist them as they complete their degree programs.

Clayton State Veterans Endowed Scholarship The Clayton State Veterans Endowed Scholarship provides funding to veterans who desire to complete their degrees. Bruce Gant, a veteran and a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and his wife, Vicky, established the scholarship. Mr. Gant served as a medic in the Vietnam War.

Chinnan Family Community Endowment The Chinnan Family Community Endowment was established by Manjeet and Lata Chinnan to provide scholarships for students interested in a global perspective through study abroad programs and to support international scholars (student and/or faculty) from India in enriching their educational or professional experience at Clayton State University.  The endowment also allows for opportunities for faculty and staff to benefit from Rotary membership and programs such as Leadership Clayton.

Don P. Hettermann Memorial Scholarship   Established with initial gifts from Kay Chester, Gary Hettermann, and Janie Hettermann and others to award scholarships to students in the School of Technology, particularly in the Aviation Maintenance Program.

Dorothy Adams Memorial Scholarship   The Dorothy Adams Memorial Scholarship will benefit future students of Clayton State who wish to study Psychology and Human Services.  In keeping with Adams’ lifetime tradition  of helping those in need, the scholarship award will assist students whose career goals include helping others.

Dr. Annapurna and Subrahmanya Bhat Dream Makers Annual Health Scholarship The Dr. Annapurna and Subrahmanya Bhat Dream Makers Annual Health Scholarship Provides scholarships to students in the College of Health who have a minimum 3.5 institutional GPA, are in good standing, and demonstrate financial need.

Drs. Bryan and Norma Edwards Spivey Hall Chamber Music Endowment The Drs. Bryan and Norma Edwards Spivey Hall Chamber Music Endowment provides funding to ensure that excellent chamber music, performed by outstanding international ensembles, continue to hold a prominent place in Spivey Hall’s programming.

Dr. Chandler B. Sharma Scholarship The Dr. Chandler B. Sharma Scholarship provides funds to students who demonstrate financial need, with preference given to an international student. His family, to honor Dr. Sharma, established the endowment.

Ernest A. Dunbar Jr., Memorial Endowment   Originated by generous contributions from friends and family in memory of Dr. Dunbar and the way he made the world a better place as an outstanding pediatrician, community volunteer, and education advocate.

G. Robert Oliver Endowed Scholarship for Legal Studies Established by the law firm of Freeman, Mathis & Gary in honor of G. Robert Oliver to provide scholarships to students majoring in any area of Legal Studies.

Gloria McElhannon Scholarship   In recognition of Gloria McElhannon’ s service to and love of the students at Clayton State, a scholarship fund was generously endowed by family friend Mr. Gerald Edwards.

Harmon M. Born Scholarship   Established in conjunction with the celebration of Mr. Born’s 50th anniversary of service to Ford and Beaudry Ford, and in recognition of Mr. Born’s role as the founding Chairman of the Clayton State Foundation.

Heritage Bank Scholarship   Created by Heritage Bank, this endowment provides scholarship awards to students in the School of Business. 

Hill Redwine Scholarship   Established by his family in memory of his service to the Clayton State University Foundation Board of Trustees and his community leadership and support.

James “Jim” Wood Lecture Series Endowment Income from the Jim Wood Lecture Series will be used to financially support the efforts of the School of Business to seek and obtain guest lecturers for appropriate courses, and executives in residence to enhance the classroom experience of students enrolled in the Clayton State University School of Business.

J.E. Edmonds Scholarship    Established by Betty Edmonds Long and further funded through the Clayton County School Employees Foundation and the Clayton County Retired Educators Association this fund provides scholarships for teacher education students.

Kaiser Permanente Scholarship   Established to award scholarships to deserving nursing students.

Martha Wood Faculty Development Endowment   Endowed by the Jim and Martha Wood family, in recognition of Dr. Martha Wood’s dedication to education, this fund provides funds for faculty development for innovation in teaching.

Mason Barfield Scholarship Created by family and friends of Athletics Director Mason Barfield, this fund recognizes his dedication to students by providing scholarships for student-athletes.

Mitchell C. Bishop Scholarship Sponsored by the Atlanta Airport Rotary.  The earliest, continuously running named scholarship at Clayton State, this fund provides scholarships for students in a variety of academic programs.

Needham B. Bateman Endowment Established through the will of Dr. Needham Bateman, this endowment provides short-term emergency loans to students.

Ruth Land Disability Services Endowment Established in memory of Ruth Land who had disabilities and her desire to support others, especially those with disabilities.

Southern Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship Endowed through a multi-year commitment from the Southern Regional Auxiliary, this fund provides for nursing students.

Southlake Kiwanis Endowment Established with funds from many years of community service and fundraising of the Southlake Kiwanis club, this scholarship is designed for youth desiring to attend technical or academic collegiate studies after having  experienced difficulties in their secondary school studies that have precluded their eligibility for traditional scholarships.  Therefore, preference shall be given to students who have graduated from the Forest Park Street School, Hearts to Nourish Hope of Riverdale, or from a similar school in Clayton County.

Spivey Hall Endowment for Piano Artistry The Spivey Hall Endowment for Piano Artistry was established by Susan Hunter and Jeff Adams to maintain and advance the quality of piano artistry at Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall.  The endowment supports artists’ fees, piano master classes, piano maintenance, and other needs deemed essential to piano performances of the highest quality.  It ensures that outstanding piano performances at Spivey Hall remain an integral part of community life.
