University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents (BOR) and US Government policies require all F-1 and J-1 students and their dependents to be covered by an approved health insurance plan. To meet this requirement, Clayton State will automatically enroll all international students in the school sponsored SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan) each Fall and Spring semester (Summer semester is included with the Spring coverage).
After course registration International students should then go to the following site:
Students should self-purchase the PGH Global Plan for F-1 students and then submit their waiver during the waiver deadline. This will remove the SHIP plan charge from your account. If you do not apply for the waiver and show proof of the PGH plan by the deadline you will have to pay for SHIP.
PGH is more cost effective for international students so we encourage you to use this option.
If students have alternate insurance they wish to use instead of SHIP (PGH or an equivalent insurance plan) they must request a waiver each Fall and Spring by the published deadline. Failure to request a waiver or rejection of your waiver request obligates the student to enroll in SHIP, no exceptions, regardless of other plans. Deadlines are communicated to international students at International Check-in and in the ISSO Newsletter emailed to the student’s Clayton State email address each month prior to the deadlines.
Coverage during OPT is strongly advised, but is optional. Health Insurance protects international students from the devastating financial impacts of unforeseen medical costs in the US.
