Clinical/Counseling Psychology Admissions

Admission to the Master of Science in Clinical/Counseling Psychology program begins with applying through Graduate Admissions.

Applications and all supporting materials are due March 15th for full consideration.  For international applicants, the deadline is February 1st.  New students are only accepted for fall semester each year.

Program Admissions Requirements (2-Pronged Process)*

Part I: Application packets are reviewed by committee to determine if applicant will be extended an interview.  Applications may be denied at this stage; applicants are not guaranteed an interview. A complete application requires the following:

  • Completed Admissions Application
    • w/ Transcripts –For admission purposes, graduate enrollment services requires official transcripts from the college and/or institution you received your undergraduate degree award. The transcript must be in a sealed envelope, mailed from the institution or sent electronically from the institution directly to graduate@clayton.edu.  Electronic transcript delivery is the preferred method. If you graduated from Clayton State University, you do not need to request a copy of your degree award transcript.
  • GPA Requirement: Minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.  International applicants should reach out to the university's Office of Admissions for questions regarding GPA conversion.
  • GRE Requirement: For applicants with a cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale from the applicant's undergraduate degree-granting institution(s), submission of GRE scores is optional.
    • For applicants whose cumulative GPA is 2.75-2.99 on a 4-point scale from the applicant's undergraduate degree granting institution, submission of GRE scores is required.  GRE scores must be submitted by the deadlines noted above for application review. For applicants taking the GRE, on average, accepted applicants score 280 or higher on the GRE.
    • The GRE- General Test is the required exam. Do nottake the psychology exam.
  • Foundational Coursework Requirement:  credit in the following courses with a grade of C or better is required.  Applicants must have a minimum of 3/5 courses completed to be considered for the upcoming admissions cycle.  Course credit must be within the last 10 years.
      • Introduction to Psychology
      • Human Development
      • Psychological Statistics
      • Research Methods
      • Abnormal Psychology
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two (2) Letters of Recommendation required. Letters should comment on the applicant's potential for success in a graduate academic program. At least one letter (but preferably both) should be from a previous professor or someone who can comment on the applicant's academic performance and/or ability. 
  • A Statement of Purpose that is a maximum of two (2) typewritten pages, single-spaced. The statement should describe the applicant's pertinent and professional experience and education, as well as their interests and goals in pursuing the Master of Science in Clinical/Counseling Psychology degree.  
    • A  resume or curriculum vitae (CV) must also be attached to the personal statement.  
  • All application materials must be submitted the Office of Graduate Admissions. Submit required application documentation to graduate@clayton.edu.

Part II: If selected for an interview, applicant will be contacted via the email address attached to their application with invitation information. Interviewees will be notified of admissions decisions after this step.

  • Attend a required on-campus interview with members of admissions committee.

Requirements for Accepted Applicants Only:

  • Criminal Background Check (if admitted). For residents of Georgia: Georgia Criminal Information Center. For residents outside of Georgia: the appropriate state criminal background check.
  • Completion and submission of the Immunization Form (upon acceptance). For more information, please contact University Health Services at (678) 466-4940.
  • Completion of any outstanding foundational courses and/or undergraduate degree. Must be confirmed by transcript submission.

All application materials must be submitted to the Office of Admissions. Do not submit any application materials to the Department of Psychology.
