Student Success Story

Ronni Washney

Clayton State University: Tell us about your academic journey at Clayton State.

Ronni Washney: My journey at Clayton State started in the fall of 2020. I was accepted into the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, and I remember thinking the program was created specifically for me. I recently started my second year of teaching and already earned my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I needed a program that would broaden my knowledge of teaching while allowing me to gain my teaching certification. The additional math courses were just a huge bonus. Clayton State won me over through the years with small class sizes and having professors who were intentional with me and my educational experience. It was a blessing to know I had people supporting me every step of the way and encouraging me to be a better version of myself throughout my journey.

CSU: Did you face any challenges in trying to complete your degree?

RW: My biggest challenge during my time at Clayton State was maintaining a balance between school, work, and family. When you are passionate about each of these components and want to give 100% in each area it can get tiring and sometimes overwhelming. I am blessed that my support system made of family, colleagues, and professors was extremely understanding and encouraging during this time.

CSU: What do you hope to do after graduation?

RW: After graduation, I plan to continue teaching middle school and eventually earn my post-secondary badge.

CSU: What advice would you give other Clayton State students who are working toward accomplishing their dream of obtaining their degree?

RW: The advice I would give to other Clayton State students would be to consistently work on time management. Find a planner or system that works for you and record every date down, especially those in the syllabus! Talk to your professors and maintain a relationship with them. They care about you and your journey.
