Student Spotlight: Aunesty Moreland gains real world experience with AI at Google

(September 24, 2025) - One of the students selected to participate in the Google “Sprinternship” was Aunesty Moreland who is currently a junior at Clayton State University and planning to graduate in 2027 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Big Data. She is interested in a career as a Data Analyst. Aunesty transferred to Clayton State one year ago from Savannah State University where she was a Visual Arts major.

Students participated in career workshops on resume writing, portfolio development, and interview preparation for various careers opportunities with Google. In addition to career development classes, the Clayton State students participated in research that leveraged generative artificial intelligence (AI).

One of the projects Moreland worked on was an Auto P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) symbol detection web application. This involves the use of AI, chiefly Machine learning and computer vision techniques, to automatically identify and extract symbols and information from P&ID images.

“For our proof of concept, the website application demonstration produced detected predictions from all of the images that we uploaded to the Google Cloud Storage and trained in VertexAI,” said Moreland. “Once trained we deployed our best model to an endpoint so that we could connect it to our chatbot and Flask web application on Github. And we were extremely proud to see everything come to life in such a short span of time.”
