Dental Hygiene Lakers gift smiles to local children
(January 9, 2024) - Clayton State’s Dental Hygiene students got in the Christmas spirit and played the role of Santa Claus for the community’s children, providing brighter smiles during the holidays.
On December 5, 2023, the department teamed up at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with TeamSmile – a nationwide organization that “connects at-risk children with a dentist and long-term dental care resources” – to provide aid to the surrounding area’s kids.
Additionally, the organization upheld its strong track record of working with professional sports teams, partnering with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons to bring greater resources and awareness to the event.
15 dental hygiene Lakers, as well as various department faculty members, came together to enjoy the day of giving.
Assistant Professor Heather L. Eddy was thrilled with the student turnout, saying that “approximately 250 children” received free dental treatment.
“Students took radiographs, provided dental cleanings, applied sealants, and contributed in other vital areas of operations, such as sterilization,” Eddy said.
At the close of the event, Eddy also commended TeamSmile for its work while saying it was “awesome” to see her Lakers helping as many kids as they could.
“These children come from all walks of life, and it is most rewarding just to see them smile and let them know they are loved,” Eddy said. “They get to sing and dance and be treated like rock stars for the day, all while attending to their oral health needs.”
