CSU Dental Hygiene Faculty Among Georgia’s First Certified in Laser Therapy
(January 6, 2026) - Clayton State University’s Department of Dental Hygiene is proud to announce that ten faculty members have completed advanced training to become among the state’s first certified providers in laser therapy, making CSU the first of Georgia’s 15 dental hygiene programs to reach this milestone. The intensive eight-hour certification reflects the department’s commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and elevating the standard of care for both students and the communities it serves.

Faculty who completed the certification include:
Metoqua Anderson, RDH; Dr. Angela Breeden; Brandi Clisham, RDH; Dr. Heather Eddy, RDH; Dr. Tenecia Hall; Julie Pyle, RDH; Kimberly Pyron, RDH; Patricia Smith, RDH; Dr. Naquilla Thomas, RDH; and Adilah Wazeerud-Din, RDH.
This achievement builds on CSU’s recent momentum in laser therapy education. Earlier this year, two senior dental hygiene students became part of the first group of hygienists in Georgia certified in laser therapy, following a major expansion of the profession’s scope of practice under Rule 150-5-.08. The rule allows registered dental hygienists, under direct supervision of a dentist, to use dental diode lasers for bacterial reduction and sulcus disinfection, offering patients reduced discomfort, faster healing, and improved periodontal outcomes.
“Seeing our faculty join the state’s first wave of certified providers reinforces our commitment to leading the profession forward,” said Dr. Naquilla Thomas, Department Chair. “Our students and faculty are shaping the future of dental care in Georgia.”
With both faculty and students now trained in this advanced technology, CSU continues to set the standard for innovation in dental hygiene education statewide.
