Community Cares Day: Lakers in Action Across Clayton County
(April 29, 2025) - On a bright spring morning, the spirit of service was alive and well at Clayton State University and within our Laker community. On April 25, 2025, students, faculty, and staff rolled up their sleeves and stepped into the heart of the community for the University’s first-ever Community Cares Day — a day dedicated to connection, collaboration, and giving back.
Armed with books, supplies, and a passion for making a difference, CSU Lakers fanned out across Clayton County and nearby communities. Whether leading story time sessions for elementary students, lending a helping hand during neighborhood clean-ups, or mentoring young people through workshops and one-on-one conversations, participants embraced the opportunity to learn from and serve their neighbors.
At one youth center, a group of students read aloud to a classroom full of bright-eyed kids, each page turned sparking laughter and eager questions. Across town, faculty members hosted wellness checks and shared health tips with local families. Everywhere they went, Lakers brought energy, compassion, and a genuine desire to strengthen the bonds between campus and community.
"Today was about more than just giving back," said Don Stansberry, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Affairs. "It was about building relationships, sharing knowledge, and showing that CSU truly cares."
The success of this inaugural event marks the beginning of a new tradition at Clayton State University — one where service is celebrated, and community and social engagement are at the core of who we are. Community Cares Day is not just a moment, but a movement — and it’s only the beginning.
