Sustainable Practices

We strive for the conservation and sustainability of our campus and State resources. We have LEED Certified and Certified Energy Manager Professionals on staff.

Sustainable Measures Implemented on Campus:

  • Mini-Central Plant for West side of Campus is in planning phase to replace individual stand-alone chillers for four buildings.
  • The University is committed to energy conservation and started upgrading inefficient HVAC systems in various buildings. HVAC in the old construction buildings (1970s construction) are being upgraded from a two-pipe to a four-pipe system and connected to the centralized Energy Management System.
  • Clayton State contributed into the national program ‘Rebuilding America’ by retrofitting buildings from simple fixes to more complex retrofits. Caulking windows, replacing windows with an energy efficient ones, improving building envelopes - to list a few items towards the energy efficient measures.
  • Replaced inefficient T-12 light fixtures with T-5 and T-8, implementing lighting controls and scheduling energy loads. Most of the buildings already upgraded and will start contributing into energy savings.
  • Occupancy sensors  installed along with LED upgrades to save energy.
  • Athletics & Fitness Gymnasium lights upgraded to LED - A total of 85 LED Highbay lights replaced 72 fixtures of 400 Watt metal halide lamps. A comprehensive LED update will showcase annual energy saving of 29.6% and projected annual energy savings of 39,024 kWh and potential of 133 MBTU per year in cooling load.
  • Electric meters for individual buildings installed to assist with remote meter reading and control of electricity consumption.
  • Water fountains are in process of  being replaced  with new eco-friendly water bottle refilling units.
  • Bio Digester in Dining Hall kitchen  installed to reduce food preparation waste.
  • Environmental friendly chemicals for cleaning being utilized.
  • Facilities Management has an electrical car and several battery powered golf carts to reduce environmental impact of harmful emissions and reduce fuel consumption. Golf carts and an electric car are at service for landscape, custodial, and mail delivery crew.
  • Electrical Vehicle Charging Station installed.
  • Facilities Management and Public Safety have added 5 flex-fuel vehicles to their fleet. These vehicles have lower emissions and are environmentally friendly.
  • Facilities Management and Public Safety with the grant from Georgia Environmental Finance Authority installed Electric Vehicle Charging Stations near parking lot D.
  • Irrigation water used on campus is supplied by rain water runoff collected in Swan Lake.
