Sociology Department of Social Sciences
...The very first course I took in sociology was life changing! I learned about the glass ceiling, deviance, perspectives of the classical theorists (such as Comte, Durkheim, Marx & Weber), socialization, paradigms of sociology (conflict theory, structural functionalism and symbolic interactionism), and the stratification of different cultures. As someone who only had a minute knowledge of what sociology actually was, this newly discovered knowledge got my gears going…Sociology became not only my major but my passion as well…..
…I believe that the study of sociology has helped me to appreciate cultures for what they are in the purest of forms. Once I was given the opportunity to look beyond the surface of social issues I developed a passion and drive to help others in the midst of their oppression. The key to doing well in the major is having the ability to act like a sponge and soak up all the information that is given to you because knowledge is power! Sociology has definitely opened up my mind to think critically without passing judgments on anything or anyone…..
…I enjoy discussing sociological issues with anyone who is all ears and I find it amazing how I can go on for hours at a time in talking about these things. On any occasion that I am given to talk with family or friends on social issues they can hear the excitement coming from my voice. Things I like to discuss with them include the concepts of conflict theory, strain, deviance and privilege just to name a few…..
…The study of sociology and the influence it has had on my life has been tremendous! It has developed me into a young lady who is driven to make a contribution to society that in some capacity will influence others into becoming agents of service. I feel that as long as you can inspire at least one person to do a good deed eventually it will create a snow-ball effect and unite people for a cause or purpose. Through this major I have been trained to be more open-minded, innovative, knowledgeable, jovial, and not judgmental. I have become more aware of the disparities that minorities are faced with. Taking the courses in sociology have made me realize that everyone does not have the same chances in life due to factors caused by strain or conflict or a flawed justice system. We have to find legitimate means of obtaining equal opportunity and resources available to us. As a result of being in sociology I have learned that there is no clear pathway to making life in society more smooth but creativity goes wherever the mind leads it to…..
…Since being a student in the sociology program at Clayton State University my skill sets and values have changed for the better. I have gained the ability to analyze and critically think about situations without offending anyone in the process. I am able to voice my opinion freely and be well respected for speaking out against or defending a topic of discussion that has an impact on future life processes. This is clear evidence that studying in this major has shaped me into the person I have become today…..
…There are several things that have been most useful and valuable to me as a result of being a student of Sociology. It has taught me to be more disciplined in my dealings with anything whether it is my education, volunteer service, or mentoring. I have learned to be empathetic towards others in sensitive situations…..
…My self-concept of who I am today is very simple to understand. I am a social change agent that works in service for others. This program has given me the confidence to lead by example and not let someone in a position of power or influence, distract me from the efforts I am putting forth to spark change. I have NO regrets in choosing this major…..
