Carpool Information

The Atlanta Regional Commission encourages the use of alternate transportation in the Atlanta area through use of the RideSmart computerized database which provides a regional confidential ride matching service. This service matches commuters who live and/or work in the Atlanta area with possible carpools, as well vanpools.

The RideSmart program uses an applicant’s home and work address, along with work hours, to match up with others who live and work in the same vicinity and have similar work hours, to form or join an existing car or van pool. Interested persons can apply for this ride matching assistance by calling a toll-free hotline, RideSmart, 1-877-433-3463.

Safety Tips for Carpoolers

  • Don’t give out personal information when seeking or joining a carpool, other than name, address and emergency telephone numbers.
  • Consider limiting gender preferences in your search.
  • Verify that other carpoolers all have valid drivers licenses, license plates, auto insurance, and vehicle registrations.
  • Take a friend and have a meeting with carpoolers in public location before joining to “meet and greet” and to establish ground rules regarding driving schedules, sharing of expenses, and to discuss other potential issues like smoking, eating, drinking, and music in the vehicles.
  • Ask other carpoolers for references and driving records (tickets, DUIs, etc.).
  • Discuss alternate plans with carpool when designated driver is unable to drive on scheduled days, either to or from work.
  • Meet carpool at mutually acceptable public location.
  • Consider a “trial period” with carpool to ensure all are comfortable with the arrangement.
  • Use common sense and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.
