What is work-study?
The Federal Work-Study program provides part-time jobs to students with financial aid eligibility. Your eligibility depends on your financial need, other types of aid you receive, and the availability of work-study funds and positions.
How do I know if I am eligible?
You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate academic year. After you are awarded, contact the Financial Aid Office by email at FinancialAid@clayton.edu to be reviewed for eligibility.
You will be notified by email regarding your work-study eligibility.
How do I apply for jobs?
Students should be referred by Career Services before applying for a work-study position. Log into CareerZone using your DUCK credentials and apply for any work-study position. Then, send your resumes to Career@clayton.edu and a Career Service Specialist will contact you.
What are the benefits of work-study?
- You have the convenience of having a job on or near the campus.
- You can arrange your work schedule around your classes.
- Unlike loans, work-study funds do not have to be repaid.
- You acquire job skills you can use after graduation.
What kind of jobs are available?
Work-study jobs are available on campus. There are also mentor positions located
off campus during the school year. More information about the mentor program can
be found here.
If I'm eligible for work-study, do I have to be enrolled full-time?
No, but you must be enrolled in at least 3 hours to participate in the work-study program.
How much will I earn?
On-campus positions are $9.00 per hour and off-campus (mentor) positions are $10.00 per hour. The maximum amount you may work is 19.5 hours. You are paid every two weeks by direct deposit.
I'm a work-study student now. Will I be able to keep my work-study position for the next term or academic year?
Your financial aid will be reviewed for the next term or academic year. If you are enrolled, making Satisfactory Academic Progress, are eligible for federal financial aid, have the minimum unmet need, and the department where employed still requires a work-study student, you may be awarded work-study for the next term or academic year.
What else do I need to know?
A background check is required for al work-study positions at no cost to you. You must attend at least one Professionalism Training Workshop presented by Career Services. Summer work is not guaranteed, but will be offered if funds are available.
Testimony
Testimony from Valerie Baker, Department of Dental Hygiene. She expressed her gratitude for a work-study student, Malik Payton, who worked in her department 3 years. Mr. Payton was an exemplary work-study student! He was task-oriented and thrived on new challenges. He completed all given assignments thoroughly and on time; he always displayed professionalism and courtesy to both faculty and students in the Department of Dental Hygiene. It was particularly rewarding to witness Mr. Payton's continuous desire to learn something new. When he expressed interest in budget management, he was provided with an overview that would surely enhance his prospects of future employment. We were especially fortunate for Mr. Payton's contribution to the 2019 Dental Hygiene CODA Accreditation Site Visit. He provided tireless assistance which contributed to the successful outcome of our CODA site visit. The Dental Hygiene faculty and staff were most impressed by Mr. Payton's intuitiveness and motivation to provide excellent work consistently, and we were ecstatic when he elected to remain with the Dental Hygiene Department for three years until he graduated in Summer 2021!
