Dr. J. Micheal Crafton Named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at University of West Georgia
Clayton State University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. J. Micheal Crafton has been named the next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of West Georgia.
“We will miss Dr. Crafton greatly, even as we wish him the best with our colleagues in Carrollton,” says Clayton State President Dr. Thomas Hynes. “Professionally, he has been a model leader. He has created the conditions in which a sense of urgency for actions has been consistent with shared and collaborative approaches to change. His leadership in many areas, such as strategic planning, enrollment management, Complete College Georgia, community engagement, to name but a few, has been exemplary. He brings perspective, intelligence, integrity, and good humor to academic affairs, and to the entire university.
“From a personal perspective, I have worked together with Micheal on academic projects at many levels since 1997. The foundation he has helped us establish here at Clayton State in academic affairs guarantees nothing but success for learning here in the future.”
“I have mixed emotions about this job change,” says Crafton. “I am happy not to drive 200 miles a day, but I am sad to not be on campus; I am happy to take on the exciting new challenges of West Georgia under President Marrero, but I am sad to leave the many, many projects and plans that many of us have concocted over the past five years and that have so much more possibilities; I am very happy to get back to my home institution and just my home; but I will be very sad to say good bye to so many people here who have made Clayton State a second home.

Lakers Open Peach Belt Tournament at Columbus State on Thursday, Mar. 6
Be there on Thursday, Mar. 6 when the red-hot (13 straight wins) Clayton State Lakers (21-5; 16-3) return to action, playing in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Columbus, Ga. The Lakers, the defending tournament champions, and led by two-time Peach Belt Defensive Player of the Year Shacamra “Triple Double” Jackson, enter the tournament as the top seed and will face fourth-seeded Lander from the East Division. Tip-off for the game at Columbus’ Lumpkin Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Baker Center Wells Fargo ATM Removed – Here are Your Options
The Wells Fargo ATM in the James M. Baker University Center had been removed earlier than scheduled. We plan to have a replacement ATM installed as soon as possible.
In the interim, if you need cash immediately then please follow these options below:
1. There are two Higher One ATMs on campus (foreign ATM charges may apply):
o On the first floor of the Baker University Center, outside the LakerCard Center
o On the first floor of Edgewater Hall, adjacent to the vending machines

Applications Now Being Accepted for Women’s Forum Scholarships
Clayton State Women’s Forum announces that applications are now being accepted for 2014 Scholarships.
The General Student Scholarship is for undergraduate female students who have completed at least one semester at Clayton State, have at least two semesters remaining before graduation, and have an overall GPA of at least 2.8. The Staff Member Scholarship is for full-time regular, non-faculty female employees who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. The application deadline for both scholarships is Monday, Mar. 25, 2014.
Women’s Forum also offers a Student Success Emergency Scholarship for a student who is near graduation and experiences a sudden emergency that would prevent her from continuing her progression toward degree completion. Applications for this scholarship are accepted throughout the year.

Spivey Hall Children’s Choir Invited to Perform at ACDA Convention in Jacksonville
The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir has been invited to perform for the Southern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in Jacksonville, Fla., May 6 to May 9. This will be the sixth performance of Spivey Hall Children’s Choir at an ACDA event.
Typically, choirs are chosen for these conventions by audition, but in rare cases choirs are invited to perform without an audition. Our invitation is a performance for the ecumenical service for the 2,000 conductors that will be in attendance at the convention.
“This is definitely a group that Spivey Hall and Clayton State can be very proud of,” says Spivey Hall Education Manager Melanie Darby.

Dale Smith Thomas to Keynote Women’s Inspirational Leadership Luncheon, Mar. 6
The Clayton State University Department of Campus Life’s Fourth Annual Women’s Inspirational Leadership Luncheon (formerly known as Women’s Tea Luncheon) will be held on Thursday, Mar. 6, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Student Activities Center Ballroom. The luncheon focuses on empowering women at the University; strengthening mentor relationships between women; and celebrating the history of women and their contributions to society.
The 2014 Women's Inspirational Leadership Luncheon keynote speaker will be Dale Smith Thomas, an unapologetic optimist and a woman whose passion for making a difference is stamped on every page of her life. Her direct and powerful message has challenged and inspired hundreds of thousands of people around the world to make winning choices in every area of their life.
She is the president and founder of Winners By Choice, Inc., but you may recognize her from one of her many national television appearances. Because of her message and her work she has been a featured guest on The Dr. Phil Show, The Big Idea on CNBC, CMT, and a Fox Reality Show with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.
Thomas has been inspiring audiences around the world for more than 20 years. Our Genealogy Group will hold its Annual All Day Workshop for Beginners on Saturday, Mar. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The first half of the day we will have speakers, and after lunch we will head to the Clayton State University Library to utilize the free genealogy programs offered by the University. You will also learn which of these programs are available to use free at home via the University website.
This will be a "hands on workshop," so bring your laptop or tablets, bring anything you need help with, bring your files and notes, and most importantly, bring a friend. With your RSVP, please let us know what brick walls you are running up against in your research. We will assign someone to help you with your issue, and hopefully get it resolved by the end of the workshop.
About a week before the workshop we will email to you all the handouts to be used during the day. Print them out and bring them in, or just use them on your laptop or tablet during the day.
Clayton State Celebrates National History Day, Mar. 8
Established in 1974, National History Day is a year-long academic program for school-aged students across grades six to 12. The contest is designed to promote skills in literacy and historical research and each year nearly half a million students across the country participate in regional, state, and national-level competitions.
This year Clayton State University will be piloting a Regional National History Day Competition for the Metro Atlanta area. This event represents an important partnership with the National Archives at Atlanta and the Georgia Humanities Council. We are excited by the response that we have received and expect to host 130 middle and high school students on Saturday, Mar. 8.
The competition will begin around 9 a.m., (in the Lecture Hall, the Baker center, and Arts & Sciences) and run through lunch. The awards ceremony will be held in the SAC and three contestants from each category will advance to the State-level competition at Mercer University where Georgia’s representatives for the National History Day Finals at the University of Maryland, College Park in June will be determined.
This Regional Competition will be an annual event for Clayton State and we thank our many participants and volunteers for their efforts. Faculty from Humanities and Teacher Education and other academic professionals from the Metro Atlanta area will be serving as judges for the competition and many of our students from the Honors College and from our Middle Grades and Secondary History Education programs have volunteered to serve as well.
This year’s theme is Rights and Responsibilities in History and students will compete across five categories, including: Historical Paper, Documentary, Exhibit, Performance, and Website. At both the junior and senior levels, students may compete as individuals or as groups in each of these categories.
What Are You Doing For Spring Break? — Alternative Spring Break, Mar. 9 to Mar. 14
The Alternative Spring Break Volunteer program is an opportunity for students to engage in community-based service projects during the University’s designated Spring Break. This program was developed to an understanding and appreciation of the issues people of various communities encounter daily. Students return from the experience with a deeper understanding of volunteerism, community service and activism to help create change. The mission of all Clayton State University's Service Learning programs is to serve as a catalyst to move students on a continuum from being just “members of society” to “active citizens."

The Angkor Resource Center, Inc. (ARC) is an innovative multicultural social services center to assist the Asian and Latino community to adjust socially and economically by providing education, information, and developmental services. ARC is unique because they are the sole and leading advocate for Asian-American and Latino minority groups in south metro Atlanta who still remain to be the most under-served, overlooked, isolated, vulnerable and hard-to-reach residents. Volunteers will assist with various services including the monthly Healthy Senior Fair, tutoring middle/high school students and English Literacy and Citizenship Preparation Courses assistance. Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County Florida mobilizes people to help neighbors by renovating and building homes, thereby improving and transforming families and communities. The ultimate goal of Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County is to eliminate substandard and poverty housing and homelessness from Hillsborough County. Volunteers will assist with new home construction in a Habitat community. Work may include roofing, building walls, painting and other general construction or destruction tasks. Spring 2014 Visiting Writers Reading Series, Mar. 20
The spring 2014 edition of the Visiting Writers Reading Series will be held on Thursday, Mar. 20 and will feature a day with Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie.
Tallie is a writer, educator, and performer who has been a featured speaker at universities, festivals and events throughout Europe and North America. She is the poetry editor of the literary magazine African Voices. Her work deals with silence, sexism and racism.
Tallie’s day at Clayton State will begin at 11:15 a.m., with a lecture in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center. Tallie will be speaking on finding empowerment through writing and being an African American woman, mother, writer, and herbalist.
After lunch, she will give a poetry reading from 2:10 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., also in UC 272. The reading will take 20 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
From 3:35 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. she will visit Dr. Brigitte Byrd’s Advanced Poetry class and meet with students from that class.

The Office of Career Services will present its annual Job and Graduate School Fair for Clayton State students and alumni on Thursday, Mar. 20, in the Student Activities Center, from noon to 3 p.m.

American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA) President Dr. Denise Bowers is scheduled to visit Clayton State Dental Hygiene students, staff and faculty while she is in the area attending the Hinman dental meeting on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 2:30 p.m. The location is still to be determined.
Student Academic Conference, Mar. 28
The 2014 Student Academic Conference will be held on Friday, Mar. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. Students from all majors and disciplines may give a presentation in the form of a poster presentation, oral presentation, or performance (whether it’s musical, theater, poetry readings, etc.) reflecting their scholarly activity at Clayton State University.

There will be a keynote speaker from noon to 1 p.m. in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center. David Lowery is an American vocalist, songwriter and guitarist from San Antonio who received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1984. He formed the alternative rock band Camper Van Beethoven and rock band called Cracker. He has also worked as a financial analyst, and started his own studio, record company and publishing company. He is a producer at the Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, Va.
In 2007, Lowery was appointed as an advisor to the collective action www.ThePoint.com which evolved into the social deals site www.Groupon.com.
In 2011, he began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia.
Recently, he has become an outspoken critic of Silicon Valley and its aggressive attacks on artists and other content creators. He has testified to Congress twice on behalf of artists.
Lowery will speak about “Creativity,” the theme for the conference.
Poster presentations will go from noon to 2 p.m., and oral presentations will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Judges will be needed for the various sessions and to decide best presentations for awards. Course/Instructor Evaluations- SESSION I ONLY
Please complete the course and instructor evaluations for SESSION I classes by Wednesday, Mar. 5 (the evaluation surveys will be available via both the SWAN and the DUCK beginning today). For each class you are taking, there is one online survey which combines the course and the instructor(s) questions. The evaluations give Clayton State University valuable feedback regarding the curriculum and the instruction that you receive. This survey data is used to improve courses, to evaluate the instructors, and to satisfy accreditation requirements.
Your instructor may set aside time for the evaluations. If no time is set aside, you should complete the evaluations on your own, using one of the following two methods:
· Log onto the SWAN portal, clicking the MY COURSES tab and locating the COURSE SURVEY channel. Your courses will be listed. Click on the course title to open the survey for that course.
· Log onto the SWAN, then go to the DUCK. You should see a message under the Course and Instructor Surveys section of the DUCK Message Portal containing a link to your evaluations. If you choose to complete the evaluations at a later time, you can always get to the DUCK Message Portal via the Personal Information menu.
In order for the survey to be complete you must enter a response to ALL required questions and click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the survey. Please note, there is also an option to opt out of each evaluation by clicking on a button at the bottom of the survey. Students in SPRING SESSION I classes who do not complete the surveys will not be able to view their grades in those classes until Mar. 21.
The department heads and instructors only receive the summary data of the class’s comments after grades become final. Students’ names arenot connected in any way to the evaluations.

We hope your semester is going well! Believe it or not, it is time to meet with your advisor and plan your summer and fall class schedules.
The priority advising period starts today and will continue through Mar. 28. During this time, advisors are more accessible, flexible, and have more time to talk with you. The goal is for all current students to be advised and have hold(s) released PRIOR to the registration period for summer/fall. The following information should be helpful as you prepare for your upcoming advising session.

Operation Study Ambassadors
- You have a MUST SEE ADVISOR hold placed on your account each semester before registration. Advising is required to ensure that students are following their curriculum requirements and have a direct point of contact to clarify university policies and procedures. This is also a time for advisors to check on your academic progress.
- You should be advised by an advisor in your major. All first-year students will be advised in the First-Year Advising & Retention Center. The name of your advisor is listed in the DUCK.
- You might have other holds that will prevent you from registering. Check the DUCK today to “VIEW HOLDS”, and contact the office listed to satisfy the requirements of each hold before registration.
- All professional academic advisors use an online scheduling system called AdvisorTrac to schedule advisement appointment tutoring.clayton.edu:8001/TracWeb40/Default.html. You should contact faculty advisors directly to determine their availability for advising.
- The summer and fall class schedules are available at apps.clayton.edu/courses/schedule. Since classrooms are still being assigned, and minor adjustments will be made to the schedule, please check again on Mar. 28 to view the final schedule.
