Career Services Graduate School Workshop, Mar. 18
The Office of Career Services is holding a Graduate School Workshop on Tuesday, Mar. 18, in room 272 of the James M. Baker University Center, at 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Networking is the process of developing professional relationships in industries and organizations of interest to you. It is the “human aspect” of the job search that helps to connect job seekers with the numerous positions that are never advertised. During this session, students will learn about networking and have a chance to practice networking skills. Students must RSVP through Laker CareerZone to attend this session. Check-in will close 15 minutes after start time.
CIMS Student Awards Ceremony, Apr. 11
On Friday, Apr.11, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) will host the Ninth Annual Student Awards Ceremony in the James Baker University Center Commons to honor CIMS students who have excelled academically.
Computer Science (CS), and Information Technology (IT) majors will receive awards in several categories: IT Experiential Learning Student of the Year, IT Outstanding Scholars Award, CS Outstanding Scholar Award, and the CIMS Chancellor's Academic Recognition Award. Several awards are available for Mathematics majors: the Rising Senior Awards, the Annita Hunt Award, and the Billie R. Nail Award and Scholarship.
The highest honor bestowed by CIMS is the Catherine Cowan Aust Award, presented to the "best all-around CIMS major." Dean's List students in all majors and Math Club, ACM, and Wi^2STEM officers will be recognized as well.
The CIMS Student Awards Committee would like to remind the Clayton State University faculty members and students that the Student Awards Ceremony is an invitation only event.

What’s Your Forte? VPA Holding Student Singer Auditions, Mar. 18, Mar. 25
Clayton State University’s Arts and Concert Management class is hosting an event where we will have local vocalists from Clayton State and local high schools show off their skill.
The winner will have the chance to make a music video, which will be produced by Clayton State film students. But this isn’t just about music. Performers are asked to bring canned goods to the event, and patrons will receive discounted admission if they bring a can.

Clayton State Spring 2014 Visiting Writers Reading Series Features a Day with Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie, Mar. 20
The spring 2014 edition of the Clayton State University Department of English’s long-running Visiting Writers Reading Series will be held on Thursday, Mar. 20 and will feature a day with Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie.
Tallie is a writer, educator, and performer who has been a featured speaker at universities, festivals and events throughout Europe and North America. She is the poetry editor of the literary magazine African Voices. Her work deals with silence, sexism and racism.
Tallie’s day at Clayton State will begin at 11:15 a.m., with a lecture in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center. Tallie will be speaking on finding empowerment through writing and being an African American woman, mother, writer, and herbalist.
After lunch, she will give a poetry reading from 2:10 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., also in UC 272. Both of these events and free and open to the public. The reading will take 20 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
From 3:35 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. she will visit Dr. Brigitte Byrd’s Advanced Poetry class and meet with students from that class.

The Office of Career Services will present its annual Job and Graduate School Fair for Clayton State students and alumni on Thursday, Mar. 20, in the Student Activities Center, from noon to 3 p.m.
The Job and Graduate School Fair brings dozens of organizations and graduate schools to campus for the opportunity to network with current Clayton State University students and graduates. Prospective employers will have opportunities for full-time, part-time and internship opportunities and graduate schools will share information about their programs.

The F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentoring program promotes and supports academic success, social adjustment and development and retention for its first-year student participants. F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentoring will welcome its third group of freshman students in fall 2014.

Applications Now Being Accepted for Women’s Forum Scholarships, Until Mar. 25
Clayton State Women’s Forum announces that applications are now being accepted for 2014 Scholarships.
The General Student Scholarship is for undergraduate female students who have completed at least one semester at Clayton State, have at least two semesters remaining before graduation, and have an overall GPA of at least 2.8. The Staff Member Scholarship is for full-time regular, non-faculty female employees who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. The application deadline for both scholarships is Monday, Mar. 25, 2014.
Women’s Forum also offers a Student Success Emergency Scholarship for a student who is near graduation and experiences a sudden emergency that would prevent her from continuing her progression toward degree completion. Applications for this scholarship are accepted throughout the year.

Atlanta Opera to Perform at Spivey Hall, Mar. 25
Just in time for Clayton State University’s Culture Shock week, the Atlanta Opera’s touring show will be performed at Spivey Hall on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Their performance is The Knightly News, an operatic news broadcast of the woes of Prince Charming and his Tri-kingdom state of affairs, including his own search for a princess, a missing grandmother and frighteningly strong winds that are blowing down houses in the land. This fun-filled children’s opera is for all ages and will have students talking about fairy-tales and humming melodies for weeks to come. Feel free to bring your kids or just come out and enjoy the performance!

Student Academic Conference, Mar. 28
The 2014 Student Academic Conference will be held on Friday, Mar. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. Students from all majors and disciplines may give a presentation in the form of a poster presentation, oral presentation, or performance (whether it’s musical, theater, poetry readings, etc.) reflecting their scholarly activity at Clayton State University.

There will be a keynote speaker from noon to 1 p.m. in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center. David Lowery is an American vocalist, songwriter and guitarist from San Antonio who received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1984. He formed the alternative rock band Camper Van Beethoven and rock band called Cracker. He has also worked as a financial analyst, and started his own studio, record company and publishing company. He is a producer at the Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, Va.
In 2007, Lowery was appointed as an advisor to the collective action www.ThePoint.com which evolved into the social deals site www.Groupon.com.
In 2011, he began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia.
Recently, he has become an outspoken critic of Silicon Valley and its aggressive attacks on artists and other content creators. He has testified to Congress twice on behalf of artists.
Lowery will speak about “Creativity,” the theme for the conference.
Poster presentations will go from noon to 2 p.m., and oral presentations will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Judges will be needed for the various sessions and to decide best presentations for awards. Student Safe Space Training, Mar. 28
Safe Space is a national program designed to provide a supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members of the campus community; increase the visible presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) allies and places that are “safe” for LGBT students across campus; and dismiss negative stereotypes and present accurate information about the LGBT population.
The Student Safe Space Training will be held on Friday, Mar. 28, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the SAC Laker Lounge.
Individuals who have completed the Safe Space Training may post the Safe Space symbol on their office door, backpacks, or binders as a way to designate themselves as allies for LGBT students, colleagues and friends.
Since the inception of the Safe Space Training program at Clayton State in 2008, more than 200 individuals have participated in the program. Given the growth of our LGBT community at Clayton State, we would like to increase the number of visible allies to improve the chances of this population excelling both in and outside of the classroom.

Clayton State to Host Workshop in Corporate Communication Design and Management, Apr. 7
The Corporate Communication program at Clayton State, in conjunction with the TRUST Student Corporate Communication Agency will host a workshop in advertising design and agency management on the Morrow campus on Monday, Apr. 7. Special guest speakers at the event include two leaders in the industry who have a wealth of international experience in graphic design, digital arts and management.
Anna Terry has been working in the visual communications industry as an arts educator and graphic designer for more than 25 years. She is the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Southern Poly, where she also lectures in New Media Arts, Design, Drawing and Art Appreciation. Terry has worked and taught in New Zealand, China and Colombia.
Don Hunter is an educator, artist and manager who has worked, studied and taught in New Zealand and The Netherlands. Hunter taught Sculptural Design, Observational Drawing, and has spent much of his career directing an international arts logistics company. He has also worked in local government as an arts advocate, working in urban design teams. Terry and Hunter are collaborating in authoring a book on “Creative Process.”
The workshop will take place on Apr. 7, from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the James M. Baker University Center, room 265.
The workshop is being sponsored by the Communication and Media Studies program of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Clayton State University, in conjunction with the recently founded TRUST Student Communication Agency.
“This is a terrific opportunity for students at Clayton State who have any interest in the persuasion industries or in art and design,” notes Assistant Professor Dr. Susan McFarlane-Alvarez, who teaches Corporate Communication and advises students of TRUST. “The workshop by Anna and Don promises to guide our student practitioners in the realities of corporate design and how to manage creative resources and ideas toward meeting strategic objectives.”

35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk, Apr. 12
The 35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk will be held on Saturday, Apr. 12, starting at 9 a.m. at Welcome All Park in College Park.
Hosted by South Fulton Running Partners, the 7K (that’s right, it’s a 7K, or approximately 4.35 miles) is the RRCA State Championship and will also include a 4K (just under 2.5 miles – they must like odd distances) walk and a race expo on Friday, Apr. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Runners can use their times for placement in the 2014 Peachtree Road Race.

Clayton State Campus Mediation Tournament, Apr. 25
Mediation is a negotiation process in which the disputing parties are assisted by a neutral third-party — a mediator.
In fall of 2013, Clayton State University students won first place at the 2013 International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament.
Help to continue that tradition and be part of the First Clayton State University Student Mediation Tournament, open to all Clayton State students.

Beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year (Fall Semester 2014 and Spring Semester 2015), students will no longer need to complete a scholarship application for Clayton State scholarships managed by the Financial Aid Office. We will be utilizing a new scholarship software program that will identify students who meet the criteria for each scholarship.
For the scholarships managed by the Financial Aid Office, students do not need to take any action to be considered. All accepted entering freshmen, transfer, graduate, and enrolled continuing students will be automatically considered for all scholarships for which they meet the minimum criteria.
For some scholarships additional information may be needed before an award can be made. In those cases all students who meet the minimum criteria will be sent an email to their Clayton State account informing them of their consideration for a particular scholarship. The email will contain instructions on what the student needs to do if they wish to be considered further for that particular scholarship.
The scholarship selection process will begin after Apr. 1. Students who are selected for a Clayton State scholarship that is managed by the Financial Aid Office will receive notification through their Clayton State email account. Please remember to check the Private Scholarships listing on a regular basis since new scholarship information is listed frequently. The listing is now available in a spreadsheet format for your convenience. The list can be printed or saved on your computer.
There is also a list of free Scholarship Search Sites on our website. Remember that if you have to pay money to apply for a scholarship, it’s most likely a scam.

· Clayton State University AmeriCorps Members champion issues in the Clayton County community and surrounding areas by participating in monthly service events and recruiting their fellow peers to get involved in community activism!
· AmeriCorps members serve 900 hours of community service over the course of 10 months (about 20 hours a week)
· AmeriCorps members spend 15 hours a week tutoring and mentoring local high school students.
· AmeriCorps members participate in the Alternative Service Trip Break Programs
· AmeriCorps members plan and facilitate the monthly AmeriCorps Service Cinema Series

Clayton State’s First-Year Writing Textbook Wants Your Essays and Art
The editors of the First-Year Writing textbook are seeking essays written for English 1101 and 1102 in the past year! The best essays will be selected for publication in our textbook, Connections: First-Year Writing @ Clayton State, 2014-2015.

Clayton State Switching Banking Services to SunTrust
In April 2014, Clayton State University will be switching its banking services from Wells Fargo to SunTrustbank.
As a result, we will be switching to a SunTrust AMT in the James M. Baker University Center and the Wells Fargo ATM in the James M. Baker University Center has been removed.
In the interim, if you need cash immediately then please follow these options below:
1. There are two Higher One ATMs on campus (foreign ATM charges may apply):
o On the first floor of the Baker University Center, outside the LakerCard Center
o On the first floor of Edgewater Hall, adjacent to the vending machines
2. Checks made payable to “CASH” may be cashed at the Bursar’s Office for up to $50. See other requirements at http://www.clayton.edu/bursar/Important-Registration-Information
3. There are two Wells Fargo branch locations near campus:
a. 6389 Jonesboro Rd., Morrow, Ga. (approximately one mile south of campus)
b. 1893 Mt. Zion Rd, Morrow, Ga. (approximately three miles from campus near Barnes & Noble)

Healthier Snacks Available in Select Vending Machines
Looking for a healthier snack in the vending machines? If so, visit the snack machines in Natural & Behavioral Sciences, the Library, the SAC, and Arbor Hall.
Look for the following items: Fat-free Fig Newtons, Fiber One 90-calorie brownies, Kettle-cooked Popcorners, and chipotle-flavored black bean and rice chips. Some are also gluten-free.
These are being tested through the end of the semester. If response is positive, we’ll increase the options and expand to other snack machines across campus. If you have feedback about the products, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Free STD Screening Results are Ready in UHS
For anyone who participated in the free STD screening offered in the clinic on Feb. 20, the results have all been received this week in University Health Services (UHS). Anyone with a positive result has been contacted directly by a member of the UHS team at the contact number provided at the time of the screening. If you would like a copy of your test results or would like to confirm a negative result, please feel free to call UHS at (678) 466-4940 or stop by the office at Clayton Station, Building 1000.
