Clayton State to Host NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Southeast Regional, Mar. 15, Mar. 16, Mar. 18
The bids are out, the brackets are filled, and the NCAA Division II women’s basketball Southeast Regional is coming back once again to Clayton State.
The NCAA Division II championship committee officially released the 64-team field for the 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Tournament, and number one-ranked Clayton State was selected as the host site for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals. The Regional will take place on Friday, Saturday and Monday (Mar. 15, 16 and 18) at the Athletics & Fitness Center.
This marks the third time that Clayton State, the Peach Belt Conference regular season and PBC Tournament champions, have played host to an NCAA Division II women’s basketball regional. The Lakers played host to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic in 2007 and the Southeast Regional in 2011.
Clayton State (29-0) will be the number one seed in the eight-team field and will play eighth seed Mount Olive (18-11) from Conference Carolinas in the opening round. The other opening round match-ups pit number two Limestone (25-3) against number seven Barton (21-7), number three Anderson (23-8) against number six Pfeiffer (24-6) and number four Lenoir-Rhyne (19-9) against number five USC Aiken (21-7).
The winner of the Southeast Regional will join the seven other regional champions at the 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s “Elite Eight” in San Antonio, TX, on March 26-29.
Game times for each round will be announced later in the week.
The Number One Women’s Basketball Team is Doing the Number One Internet Meme – the Harlem Shake
The Clayton State University Lakers Women’s Basketball team, ranked number one in NCAA Division II, recently teamed up with CSTV, Clayton State University’s student television organization, to produce the official Clayton State University Harlem Shake video.
In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past month, the Harlem Shake defines “viral” as the most recent internet meme. (And, it’s just a coincidence that the Lakers’ All-American and Division II Player of the Year candidate, Peach Belt Player of the Year Drameka Griggs, goes by “MeMe.”) In fact, the only thing hotter than the Harlem Shake is undefeated and Peach Belt regular season champion Lakers. Thanks to CSTV, Clayton State Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations Gid Rowell, and the Clayton State Office of University Relations, the Lakers are now in on the action and have their own Harlem Shake video. The Clayton State University School of Graduate Studies will be holding its next informational Open House on Tuesday, Mar. 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the first floor atrium of the University’s Music Education Building.

AmeriSole: Shoe Drive

AmeriSole is a weeklong service project where AmeriCorps Members will be collecting shoes for the Calvary Refuge Center and the Laker Care Closet. The AmeriCorps Program is requesting that people donate their new or gently worn shoes of all sizes and for both men, women, and children throughout the week by placing them in one of our drop boxes that will be located in various places across campus in Laker Hall, Main Street, and the Student Activities Center.

White House Interfaith Initiative Meeting, Mar. 12
Clayton State University was selected to participate in the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. This initiative is out of the White House and is designed to advance interfaith cooperation and community service in higher education.
The goal of the Clayton State University Interfaith Challenge plan is to bring awareness, appreciation, and acceptance of religious diversity on campus and in our community. Our plan will create a campus Interfaith Council for faith-based student organizations to address faith issues on campus and in the surrounding community, and to introduce students to the uniqueness of different faiths that provide a cultural diversity that brings out the best in our students, our campus, and our community.
To meet this goal, the Interfaith Council’s objectives will be to charter a faith-based social Greek-letter organization and to develop a service component that explores different ways to remain spiritually and physically healthy using the philosophies and traditions of different faiths—reinforcing the case that often times, we have more commonalities in our ideals than we are aware, although we may take different routes to materializing those ideals.

SBDC Starting a Business Workshop; at Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce, Mar. 13
The second installment of the Clayton State Small Business Development Center’s (SBDC) popular “Starting a Business” workshop for 2013 will be held on Wednesday, Mar. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce/Griffin Welcome Center. The Chamber is located at 143 N. Hill St., Griffin.

Visiting Writers Reading Series, Alumnus Collin Kelley to Read, Mar. 14
Clayton State University alumnus Collin Kelley returns to campus for the Visiting Writers Reading Series for spring 2013 on Thursday, Mar. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in room L-200 of the Clayton State Library.
At the event sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences and the Department of English, Kelley will be reading some of his mystery and poetry selections. The event is free to the community and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
“I enjoyed my time at Clayton State University and especially the encouragement of my English professor, Dr. Sharon Sellers. She recognized my potential immediately and what I learned from her was invaluable to my career as a journalist, novelist and poet,” Kelley remarks.
Kelley is a novelist, poet and playwright from Atlanta. His poetry, essays and interviews have appeared in magazines, journals and anthologies around the world. The 2009 critically acclaimed Conquering Venus
was his debut novel and an Amazon bestseller. He later published Kiss Shot,
a collection of short stories, exclusively for the Amazon Kindle in 2012. His second novel, Remain In Light,
was a 2012 finalist for the Townsend Prize for Fiction.
He is a recipient of the 2007 Georgia Author of the Year Award
and the 2012 Goodreads Poetry Award for his poem “My Mother Demonstrates How To Escape From a Plane Crash.” Kelley’s play The Dark Horse
earned him the 1994 Deep South Festival of Writer’s Award and the 1997 Georgia Theatre Conference Award.
Kelley is co-director of the Atlanta Queer Literary Festival, sits on the board of Poetry Atlanta and on he advisory council for Georgia Center for the Book. He has been a journalist for more than 25 years and is the managing editor for Atlanta Intown

The Clayton State Office of Career Services will present the Job and Graduate School Fair on Thursday, Mar. 14, in the Student Activities Center, from noon to 3 p.m.
The Job and Graduate School Fair brings dozens of organizations and graduate schools to campus for the opportunity to network with current Clayton State University students and graduates. Organizations will have opportunities for full-time, part-time and internship opportunities and Graduate Schools will share information about their programs. The Clayton State Retirees Association’s (CSRA) Gourmet Dinner and Wine Pairing will be held in the Harry S. Downs Center on Friday, Mar. 15, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Spivey Hall’s Catherine Giel Serving as Music Director for Opera Based on Conrad Novel, Mar. 15
Capitol City Opera, the only opera company in the southeast that primarily helps local singers and artists establish their careers, will present the world premiere of Atlanta-based composer Curtis Bryant’s newly completed opera, The Secret Agent
, from Friday, Mar. 15 to Sunday, Mar. 17.
Based on the 1907 novel of the same name by Joseph Conrad, with libretto by New York forensic psychiatrist Allen Reichman, The Secret Agent
will feature a cast of Atlanta- based talent, including a 17-piece chamber orchestra. Performances will be Mar. 15, at 8 p.m., Mar. 16, at 8 p.m., and Mar. 17, at 3 p.m., at the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. Tickets are available online at CCITYOPERA.org.
Music direction for The Secret Agent
will be by Catherine Giel, education manager for Clayton State University’s world-famous Spivey Hall. In addition, one of the principal cast members, baritone Ivan Segovia, is a Clayton State music graduate who still works part-time house managing at Spivey Hall. A native of Clayton County, Segovia also attended honor workshops at Spivey Hall before matriculating at Clayton State, and generally has a long history with this community.
The Secret Agent
is a tale of intrigue, anarchy, espionage, betrayal, murder and suicide, and explores the impact of these dark and unnerving themes on human relationships. The production, set in 1930’s London, will evoke the feelings and mystery of film noir.
Clayton State SBDC Announces PlanSmart at the Fayette Chamber, Starting Mar. 15
Clayton State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has announced a new series of classes, PlanSmart, to be held at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce.
PlanSmart will consist of three classes, held on Mar. 15, Apr. 12 and May 17. The cost is $69 per class, or $150 for the entire series. A $10 Fayette Chamber member discount is available for either individual classes or the entire series, and breakfast is provided for all three classes.
The initial offering on Friday, Mar. 15 will be “Writing a Living Business Plan.” It was originally scheduled for Feb. 19 on the Clayton State campus as “Writing an Effective Business Plan.” However, SBDC has rescheduled the class as the first offering in PlanSmart. “Writing a Living Business Plan” is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fayette Chamber, 600 Lanier Ave., Ste. 250, Fayetteville. The class will focus on telling a compelling story, completing a SWOT analysis, and setting goals and key performance indicators.
The second class is “Finding & Refining Competitive Advantage.” Scheduled for Friday, Apr. 12, it will also run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fayette Chamber. The class will look at finding, measuring and developing competitive advantage and making unique aspects of a business part of a marketing message.
The third class, “Pricing for Profit” will be on Friday, May 17 and will focus on better pricing tactics and strategies and matching customer pricing behaviors with pricing strategies. This class is also from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fayette Chamber.

A Trip to Panama
The College of Business is hosting a trip to Panama, May 12, 2013 to May 18, 2013, and they need a few more students. The cost is $2904, and, since the Port of Savannah has the Panama Canal to thank for its status as the fastest-growing container port in the U.S., the package even includes a one day trip to the Port of Savannah in April.
Visit businesses and take part in cultural activities. Panama offers a modern urban infrastructure, tropical islands, rain forests, cool mountain ranges, and both Caribbean and Pacific beaches.

Study Abroad in Jamaica has Openings for a Few More Students
The College of Arts and Sciences is hosting a study abroad/community service learning trip to Jamaica, from May 29, 2013 to June 20, 2013.
Dr. Rafik Mohamed, chair of the Department of Social Sciences, will lead the trip and says he’s happy to invite a few more students to participate. Service Project in the Okefenokee Swamp
Join Outdoor Adventure for a service project in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Preserve, one of the oldest and best preserved freshwater systems in America. Visit the 402,000 acres of cypress forest, marsh, lakes and islands. Filled with alligators, Sandhill cranes, red-cockaded woodpeckers and more than 400 other species of animals, it is a wonderful place to learn about wildlife. During this trip we will help maintain hiking and paddling trails.

High Falls State Park is named for tumbling cascades on the Towaliga River. We will hike along the river’s edge and through hilly forest. In the early 1800s, this area was a prosperous industrial town with several stores, a grist mill, cotton gin, blacksmith shop, shoe factory and hotel. High Falls became a ghost town in the 1880s when a major railroad bypassed it.

We will be paddling a classic Southeastern whitewater rafting run. Participants Wanted – “10,000 Steps to Denali”
The Department of Recreation & Wellness Outdoor Adventure Program is looking for a minimum of 10-15 participants (students, faculty, and staff) who are interested in participating in the “10,000 Steps to Denali” campus initiative which will take place in June.
While the first team of African-American mountaineers will summit Denali, the highest peak in North America, Outdoor Adventure (OA) hopes to have our own diverse population outdoors by coordinating our own local “expeditions”. During the month of June, OA will schedule three day-trips including, a day hike, a rock climbing event, and finally a trail running adventure. The details of each event will be made available to those who are interested. Choose one trip or all three – the choice is yours!

The Fifth Annual Civic Engagement Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Conference, “Getting Engaged: The Realities of Pursuing Your Passion for Civic Engagement” will be held at the National Archives at Atlanta on Friday, Mar. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Students in the University System of Georgia are encouraged to develop an individually compelling sense of social and civic responsibility, community leadership and service to society. To support this goal, Clayton State University and the National Archives at Atlanta announce the Fifth Annual Student Research Conference on Civic Engagement.
Undergraduate and graduate students attending USG schools are invited to submit papers and panel-session proposals on the broad subject of civic engagement beyond the vote.

Clayton County Community Emergency Preparedness Seminar, Mar. 27
Please mark your calendars for the second annual Clayton County Community Emergency Preparedness Seminar, taking place on Wednesday, Mar. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Morrow Center (1180 Southlake Cir., Ste. 100, Morrow).
This year's seminar focuses on "Making Vulnerable Populations Less Vulnerable." Businesses and individuals who care for indigent, medically fragile, elderly, disabled, or non-English-speaking persons will want to attend this free seminar. Clayton State to Host Georgia Psychology Society’s Eighth Annual Meeting, Mar. 30
Clayton State University will be hosting the Georgia Psychological Society’s Eighth Annual Meeting on Saturday, Mar. 30.
The conference schedule calls for welcome, refreshments and registration from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., followed by a general poster session (9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.), and the keynote address. After lunch will come two additional poster sessions (from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.), followed by presentations and symposia.
Registration is $20 for students, $30 for faculty and professionals, includes yearly membership in the Georgia Psychological Society (GPS). Lunch and mid-morning snacks will be provided at conference. Registrations will be held at the conference registration desk for pick up and registrants will receive email confirmation. Neuropsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience Program at Georgia State University, will present the keynote address, “Functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging findings among long-term survivors of childhood brain tumors.”
Faculty, professionals, graduate students and undergraduate students in psychology and related fields are invited to submit papers for possible presentation. Submissions in basic and applied areas of psychology, and interdisciplinary topics will be considered. Possible interdisciplinary topics include psychological factors in education, nursing, sports, politics, and management. Presentation proposals (as 250 word abstracts, or full papers) are due by Tuesday, Mar. 12 to Dr. Charles R. Talor of Valdosta State University, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Submissions should be in MSWord or RTF format and must include the following: author name(s) and affiliation(s), address, email and phone number of key presenter, name of faculty mentor (if any), whether submission should be considered as a Psi Chi Poster session or Honor Society Poster Session.
Annual Student Leadership Conference, Apr. 5 to Apr. 7
The Annual Student Leadership Conference will be held from Friday, Apr. 5 to Sunday, Apr. 7, at Callaway Gardens, in Pine Mountain, Ga.
Designed to help students develop an understanding of leadership theory and application, team dynamics, critical thinking, diversity and positive peer networks., the conference costs just $20, which includes travel, lodging, meals and conference materials.

Clayton State University student leaders and organizations make significant contributions to the campus environment and surrounding communities. The Student Leadership & Involvement Awards provides the Division of Student Affairs with an opportunity to recognize those outstanding students and organizations for their hard work and dedication.
Application Packets will be available starting Monday, Feb. 25. The application packet is available for pick-up in the Department of Campus Life located in the Student Activities Center Administrative Ste. 223.
