Withdrawal Date Changed to Mar. 21
Due to the number of class days lost this semester as a result of inclement weather, midterm grades will now be posted in the DUCK by Mar. 17 at 5 p.m. The last day to withdrawal from a course and receive a grade of W has been changed from Mar. 7 to Mar. 21.

This is the first opportunity for students to order class rings, graduation invitations and other graduation regalia.

Clayton State Commemorates Civil Rights Movement, Feb. 27
The Clayton State University Departments of English, Interdisciplinary Studies and Humanities are hosting a series of events surrounding commemoration of the Civil Rights movement on Thursday, Feb. 27.
The event series will be held in room G101 of the Clayton State Arts & Sciences Building from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 27. The entire day’s events are free and open to the public.
The day will start at 11:15 a.m., with the Sixth Annual African American Read-In, hosted by the Departments of English and Interdisciplinary Studies and scheduled to run until 12:30 p.m.
At 2 p.m., the Department of Humanities will host guest speaker Dr. Sheila Flemming-Hunter. A reception for Flemming-Hunter, also hosted by the Department of Humanities, will run from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Flemming-Hunter is a historian, philanthropist and educator. Author of “Bethune-Cookman College 1904–1994: The Answered Prayer to a Dream,” she is also the founder and president of The Black Rose Foundation for Children, Inc. (BRFC). The mission of BRFC is to be a bridge for abandoned children, especially children of incarcerated parents and foster children. The goal of BRFC is to provide financial assistance through fundraising for model youth programs.
Job and Graduate School Fair, Mar. 20
The Office of Career Services will present its annual Job and Graduate School Fair for Clayton State students and alumni on Thursday, Mar. 20, in the Student Activities Center, from noon to 3 p.m.
The Job and Graduate School Fair brings dozens of organizations and graduate schools to campus for the opportunity to network with current Clayton State University students and graduates.
More than 40 employers will have opportunities for full-time, part-time and internship opportunities and graduate schools will share information about their programs. See entire list in LakerCareer Zone!

Clayton State to Hold Three Open Meetings in Conjunction with Upcoming SACS Visit
Clayton State University has scheduled three open meetings fro faculty, staff, students and the general public in preparation for the upcoming accreditation visit to the University by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
The meetings will be held to provide information about Clayton State’s Quality Enhancement Plan – a standard part of SACS’s regular decennial accreditation visit – and the upcoming SACSCOC site visit, scheduled for later in March 2014. The meetings are free and open to the public.
Clayton State’s current SACS accreditation dates from 2004.
The meeting dates and locations are as follows:

OWLS Events, Feb. 25, Feb. 26, Feb. 27
In honor of Women's History Month, Organizing Women for Lifelong Success (OWLS), along with the Non-Traditional Students Organization, Beauty & Brains and Clayton State University Counseling and Psychological Services, will host a performance of “The Vagina Monologues.” We invite all Clayton State women students, faculty and staff to audition for a role in this iconic play. Auditions are on Tuesday, Feb. 25 and Thursday, Feb. 27, both from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in Arts & Sciences room G-233.
The Healthy Love Party is presented by Sister Love, Inc. The Healthy Love Party is a workshop that creates an engaging environment in which participants have the unique chance to connect with their sexuality in a way that is positive and self-loving instead of shameful or degrading. The logic of this workshop is that if women think and talk about sex and sexuality in positive ways, they will be more likely to value their bodies enough to protect themselves.
The workshop encourages participants to be confident in approaching their own sexuality and to demand safe behaviors from themselves and their partners. It also provides the opportunity for women to explore, discuss and dispel the barriers to practicing safer sex. Free HIV and STD testing will be available on site for all participants. The workshop will be in Arts & Sciences room G-127 on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

VITA, Mar. 1
Accounting students from Clayton State University are again participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program hosted by the College of Business.
VITA is a national program that provides tax support for certain eligible taxpayers. The program, which has been in existence for more than 40 years, is also an experiential learning experience for Clayton State students, providing the volunteers with extensive IRS training and testing, enabling them to ensure that taxpayers will have their tax returns filled out accurately and timely and receive the tax credits they qualify for, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.
This service will next be offered at the College of Business on Saturday, Mar. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Taxpayers will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis. If taxpayers have further questions they may call the VITA hotline at (678) 466-4527.
Current college students can also benefit from having VITA volunteers prepare their taxes since the volunteers are trained in the rules for the credits available for tuition and other school-related expenses. The VITA program also prepares state income tax returns and provides free e-filing options to ensure clients receive their refunds as soon as possible.
Note: There are some commercial preparers advertising on campus, if you want free help look for the word, “VITA” or the Clayton State logo.
Those who are eligible to receive this service are taxpayers who make under $51,000 a year and wish to receive help with their 2013 personal income taxes using Forms 1040EZ, 1040A, and simple1040s. The program does not provide assistance with out-of-state or small business returns, or for those who are self-employed.
Those interested in receiving this assistance must bring the following items:
ü Photo identification,
ü Social security cards for themselves, their spouse, and dependents,
ü Birthdates for primary, secondary, and dependents on the tax return
ü Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1009-R, from all employers
ü Interest and dividend statements from bank(s), Form 1099
ü Other relevant information about income and expenses
o Day care provider identifying number
o Total amount paid for day care
ü A copy of last year’s federal and state income tax returns if possible,
ü Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit.
Please note that both spouses will need to be present to file electronically.

History Honor Society Accepting Applications, Deadline Mar. 3
Applications are now being accepted for membership in Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. This prestigious organization promotes the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.
Membership is not limited to History majors. To join, undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (four courses) in History, achieve a minimum GPA of 3.1 in History and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. There is a one-time initiation fee of $40. This fee includes a membership certificate and four issues of the journal The Historian. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is a lifetime membership.

CAS Saturday Walk-in Math Tutoring Services and Open House, Mar. 4
The Center for Academic Success (CAS) would like to remind Clayton State students of the walk-in Math tutoring available on Saturdays:
Due to the inconvenience of the weather, the Center for Academic Success was closed for three days this week causing the cancellation of Supplemental Instruction sessions, walk-in math tutoring and more than 50 individual tutoring appointments. While we cannot help recapture those lost opportunities for academic support, the CAS can provide some assistance for those needing help in Math courses this Saturday. The CAS wants to remind everyone that the center is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday; two math tutors will be available to assist students on a walk-in basis. Clayton State Schedules Women’s Inspirational Leadership Luncheon, Mar. 6
The Department of Campus Life’s Fourth Annual Women’s Inspirational Leadership Luncheon (formerly known as Women’s Tea Luncheon) will be held on Thursday, Mar. 6, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Student Activities Center Ballroom.
The luncheon focuses on empowering women at the University; strengthening mentor relationships between women; and celebrating the history of women and their contributions to society. This luncheon is sponsored by Campus Life, D.E.E.P. Educators, Student African American Sisterhood, Beauty and Brains, and Student Leadership and Involvement Council.
During the luncheon, one faculty/staff member and one student from each academic classification will be recognized based on nominations by peers, faculty, or staff for consistently exhibiting these characteristics on and off campus: leadership, positive image, academic success and willingness to mentor others.

Our Genealogy Group Annual Workshop, Mar. 8
Our Genealogy Group will hold its Annual All Day Workshop for Beginners on Saturday, Mar. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This genealogy workshop for beginners is free, but you must RSVP quickly! Only the first 50 are guaranteed a seat. Please RSVP to email@example.com. We will be unable to accommodate those who do not RSVP.

The first half of the day we will have speakers, and after lunch we will head to the Clayton State University Library to utilize the free genealogy programs offered by the University. You will also learn which of these programs are available to use free at home via the University website.
This will be a "hands on workshop," so bring your laptop or tablets, bring anything you need help with, bring your files and notes, and most importantly, bring a friend. With your RSVP, please let us know what brick walls you are running up against in your research. We will assign someone to help you with your issue, and hopefully get it resolved by the end of the workshop.
About a week before the workshop we will email to you all the handouts to be used during the day. Print them out and bring them in, or just use them on your laptop or tablet during the day.
Spring 2014 Visiting Writers Reading Series, Mar. 20
The spring 2014 edition of the Visiting Writers Reading Series will be held on Thursday, Mar. 20 and will feature a day with Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie.
Tallie is a writer, educator, and performer who has been a featured speaker at universities, festivals and events throughout Europe and North America. She is the poetry editor of the literary magazine African Voices. Her work deals with silence, sexism and racism.
Tallie’s day at Clayton State will begin at 11:15 a.m., with a lecture in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center. Tallie will be speaking on finding empowerment through writing and being an African American woman, mother, writer, and herbalist.
After lunch, she will give a poetry reading from 2:10 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., also in UC 272. The reading will take 20 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
From 3:35 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. she will visit Dr. Brigitte Byrd’s Advanced Poetry class and meet with students from that class.

ADHA President to Visit Clayton State, Mar. 26
American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA) President Dr. Denise Bowers is scheduled to visit Clayton State Dental Hygiene students, staff and faculty while she is in the area attending the Hinman dental meeting on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 2:30 p.m. The location is still to be determined.
Student Academic Conference, Mar. 28
The 2014 Student Academic Conference will be held on Friday, Mar. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. Students from all majors and disciplines may give a presentation in the form of a poster presentation, oral presentation, or performance (whether it’s musical, theater, poetry readings, etc.) reflecting their scholarly activity at Clayton State University.

There will be a keynote speaker from noon to 1 p.m. in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center. David Lowery is an American vocalist, songwriter and guitarist from San Antonio who received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1984. He formed the alternative rock band Camper Van Beethoven and rock band called Cracker. He has also worked as a financial analyst, and started his own studio, record company and publishing company. He is a producer at the Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, Va.
In 2007, Lowery was appointed as an advisor to the collective action www.ThePoint.com which evolved into the social deals site www.Groupon.com.
In 2011, he began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia.
Recently, he has become an outspoken critic of Silicon Valley and its aggressive attacks on artists and other content creators. He has testified to Congress twice on behalf of artists.
Lowery will speak about “Creativity,” the theme for the conference.
Poster presentations will go from noon to 2 p.m., and oral presentations will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Judges will be needed for the various sessions and to decide best presentations for awards. 2014 Recruitment Begins for F.I.R.S.T Step Peer Mentoring Program
The Office of Orientation & New Student Programs will begin recruitment for 2014-2015 “F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentors” – Fostering and Initiating Relationships for a Successful Transition.
The F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentoring program promotes and supports academic success, social adjustment and development and retention for its first-year student participants. F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentoring will welcome its third group of freshman students in fall 2014.
