The Boys from Syracuse, Apr. 11, Apr. 12
The Clayton State Music Drama Workshop presents... “The Boys from Syracuse” with performances in Spivey Hall will be Friday, Apr. and Saturday, Apr. 12, both at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
According to Director Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller, it’s a BIG show, and the first Music Drama Workshop production with scenery and lighting design work by the new Assistant Professor of Theatre and Technical Director Adam Howarth.
“I think our audiences will really enjoy the zany look that reflects the funhouse-mirror craziness of this farce of multiple mistaken identities!” says Zeller, who also points out that many Clayton State faculty are working with or alongside the students.
In addition to Zeller and Howarth, that includes choreography by Katie Kelly, and many of full-time and part-time Division of Music faculty in the orchestra pit. But, you’d expect that. Maybe you didn’t know that Dr. Joe Johnson, chair of the Humanities Department, is a fine tenor, and will be making his Spivey Hall debut singing the opening number of the show, “I Had Twins!” Rumor also has it that the one-and-only Dr. Jim Braun is going to help out as a consultant to make some of the onstage Sorcerer’s magic tricks work out. Oh yes, Zeller will also sing a small role.
In addition to the faculty, the cast will not only include Music majors, but also students majoring in Theatre, Biology, and Management.
Safety Message to Campus
Plan, Prepare, React…
To all students, faculty and staff, the following safety tips are being provided in the unfortunate event that any of you are ever exposed to an active shooter incident, whether on or off campus.
Active shooter defined — an individual actively engaged in shooting people in a confined space or other populated area. In most cases, there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.
If an active shooter is ever in your vicinity, quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect yourself. Students, employees and visitors are likely to follow the directions of instructors, supervisors and administrators during an active shooter situation.
Active Shooter Response Options
Have an escape route and plan in mind. Identify the nearest exit doors from your location to the outside of the building.
Leave your belongings behind (take keys and phones only if it doesn’t delay your escape).
Keep your hands visible if you encounter the police.
Hide in an area out of the active shooter’s view.
Block entry to your hiding place and lock or barricade the doors if possible with tables, chairs, etc.
Place cell phones on silent or vibrate mode.
Keep quiet and turn out the lights.
Last Resort--Take action
As a last resort and only when your life is in danger.
Attempt to incapacitate the active shooter.
Act with physical aggression and throw items at the shooter, books, backpacks, shoes, hot coffee, fire extinguishers, anything that may be a deterrent or distraction.
Call Public Safety at (678) 466-4050 or 911 when it is safe to do so.
How to respond when law enforcement arrives:
Remain calm and follow instructions from officers.
Immediately raise hands and spread fingers when instructed by officers.
Keep hands visible at all times.
Avoid making quick movements toward officers such as attempting to go to them for safety.
Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling.
Don’t stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating; proceed in the direction from which officers are entering the building/area or toward the location designated by officers.
Information you should provide to law enforcement or 911:
Location of the active shooter/s
Number of shooters
Physical description of the shooter/s
Number and type of weapons possessed by the shooter/s
Number of potential victims and their locations at the incident scene
These are just a few safety suggestions to keep in mind. Our Public Safety Department can provide an “active shooter response” training session to either small or large groups upon request, which includes a practical scenario video recently produced by campus police in the USG system. Clayton State to Host Workshop in Corporate Communication Design and Management, Apr. 7
The Corporate Communication program at Clayton State, in conjunction with the TRUST Student Corporate Communication Agency will host a workshop in advertising design and agency management on the Morrow campus on Monday, Apr. 7. Special guest speakers at the event include two leaders in the industry who have a wealth of international experience in graphic design, digital arts and management.
Anna Terry has been working in the visual communications industry as an arts educator and graphic designer for more than 25 years. She is the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Southern Poly, where she also lectures in New Media Arts, Design, Drawing and Art Appreciation. Terry has worked and taught in New Zealand, China and Colombia.
Don Hunter is an educator, artist and manager who has worked, studied and taught in New Zealand and The Netherlands. Hunter taught Sculptural Design, Observational Drawing, and has spent much of his career directing an international arts logistics company. He has also worked in local government as an arts advocate, working in urban design teams. Terry and Hunter are collaborating in authoring a book on “Creative Process.”
The workshop will take place on Apr. 7, from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the James M. Baker University Center, room 265.
The workshop is being sponsored by the Communication and Media Studies program of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Clayton State University, in conjunction with the recently founded TRUST Student Communication Agency.
“This is a terrific opportunity for students at Clayton State who have any interest in the persuasion industries or in art and design,” notes Assistant Professor Dr. Susan McFarlane-Alvarez, who teaches Corporate Communication and advises students of TRUST. “The workshop by Anna and Don promises to guide our student practitioners in the realities of corporate design and how to manage creative resources and ideas toward meeting strategic objectives.”

What’s Your Forte? Apr. 8
Clayton State students will compete in a vocal talent contest, the “What’s Your Forte” Talent Show, on Tuesday, Apr. 8, at 6 p.m. in the Clayton State Theatre (room G-132 of the Arts & Sciences Building).
This event also functions as a food drive, so admission is $3, but if you bring a can of food, admission is free.

National Outdoor Leadership School Expedition Denali Speakers, Apr. 10
Last summer a group of African Americans made a historic attempt to summit Denali, the highest peak in North America. The climb was only one chapter of the project developed by the National Outdoor Leadership School as an effort to inspire young people of color to get outside. Come listen as team members share their experiences and compelling stories to inspire future adventures!

“Created Equal” Screenings, Apr. 10

Crafting a Response: Religious Expression, Private Business, and Health Care," a New York Times Talk, Apr. 11
The next New York Times Talk at Clayton State University will feature Dr. Josh Meddaugh, assistant professor of Political Science, who will facilitate a talk called: "Crafting a Response: Religious Expression, Private Business, and Health Care."
The talk, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Friday, Apr. 11, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., in room UC 267 of the James M. Baker University Center. This talk will include a discussion of the Supreme Court case Sebelious v. Hobby Lobby Inc., which may determine if private businesses are exempt from providing contraception due to their owners' religious beliefs.

How’s Your Elevator Pitch? Clayton State Offers College Students a Competition on Pitching Their Big Idea, Apr. 11
How’s your elevator pitch? College students from throughout Georgia will have a chance to find out on Friday, Apr. 11 when the College of Business at Clayton State University holds its first Elevator Pitch Competition at Clayton State from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In case you’re not familiar with an elevator pitch, it’s a talk that quickly presents key information about a business idea regarding a product or service, one that can be given during the course of an elevator ride. The intent of an elevator pitch is to encourage a potential investor to further pursue an opportunity. In other words, according to Dr. Louis Jourdan, chair of the College of Business Department of Management, Marketing & Supply Chain Management and professor of Management, who’s organizing the event, it’s a chance to pitch a big idea. The competition is sponsored by Mitch Johnson with Primerica Financial Services.
In addition to Clayton State students, the College of Business is inviting students from other colleges and universities across the state, from the University of North Georgia to Savannah State, and from the University of West Georgia to Georgia Regents. The competition fee is $10, and registration through the website www.clayton.edu/business/Elevator-Pitch-Competition ends Apr. 4. In addition, the public is invited to hear the elevator pitches, and anyone can attend for free.
The competition presents an opportunity to refine professional skills and is open to students from all majors. The competition judges will be drawn from the corporate and education fields and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three pitches.
CIMS Student Awards Ceremony, Apr. 11
On Friday, Apr.11, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) will host the Ninth Annual Student Awards Ceremony in the James Baker University Center Commons to honor CIMS students who have excelled academically.
Computer Science (CS), and Information Technology (IT) majors will receive awards in several categories: IT Experiential Learning Student of the Year, IT Outstanding Scholars Award, CS Outstanding Scholar Award, and the CIMS Chancellor's Academic Recognition Award. Several awards are available for Mathematics majors: the Rising Senior Awards, the Annita Hunt Award, and the Billie R. Nail Award and Scholarship.
The highest honor bestowed by CIMS is the Catherine Cowan Aust Award, presented to the "best all-around CIMS major." Dean's List students in all majors and Math Club, ACM, and Wi^2STEM officers will be recognized as well.

“Broadway and More,” in Spivey Hall, Apr. 15
The Southern Crescent Symphony and the Southern Crescent Youth Orchestra will be presenting “Broadway and More” on Tuesday, Apr. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall.

April Service Learning Series, Apr. 19
It’s the last Service Learning Series of the semester and we are going out with a ROAR!! (And maybe a “HOWL” or a “GROWL”).
For the month of April, the focus of the Service Learning Series will be on Animal Conservation.
Clayton State students will have the opportunity to work with the Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove, Georgia assisting with their annual fundraiser; the 4th Annual Zebra Dash 5K and one mile fun run. Duties will include runner registration, course set-up and general operations of the race/run.
In addition to learning about the history and mission of the organization. Participants will also receive insight on the importance of wildlife rehabilitation and education programs.
This event will take place on Saturday, Apr. 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Transportation will be provided to those who request it.

Clayton State Named “Tree Campus USA;” Arbor Day Celebration, Apr. 25
The Arbor Day Foundation has honored Clayton State University with 2013 Tree Campus USA® recognition for its commitment to effective urban forest management.
Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and sponsored by Toyota to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Clayton State achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project.
As part of its Tree Campus USA designation, Clayton State and the University’s Tree Committee are hosting its Second Annual Arbor Day Observance on Friday, Apr. 25, at 10:30 a.m., featuring a representative of the Georgia Forestry Commission who will present Clayton State with its Tree Campus USA plaque.
The comprehensive public Arbor Day ceremony will also include a tree planting at the James M. Baker University Center and the Clayton State Tree Committee will be giving away tree seedlings at the ceremony. Also included on the day will be guided tours of the “Plants of the Piedmont” trail, located behind Spivey Hall, the Music Education Building and the Harry S. Downs Center. Following the ceremony, there will be trees planted at various locations throughout the campus.
Honors Program Spring Meeting, Apr. 25
The Clayton State Honors Program hosts its Spring Wrap Up meeting on Friday, Apr. 25, at noon in Room B14 of the Lecture Hall. The agenda includes thanking outgoing officers, electing next year’s representatives, a brief Honors Program Orientation/Overview and discussion of ongoing committee business. Pizza and drinks will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.
Clayton State Campus Mediation Tournament, Apr. 25
Mediation is a negotiation process in which the disputing parties are assisted by a neutral third-party — a mediator.
In fall of 2013, Clayton State University students won first place at the 2013 International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament.

Graduate Nursing Program to Hold First Research Symposium, May 2
Dr. Victoria Foster, assistant professor of Nursing and interim director of Clayton State University’s Graduate Nursing Program, has announced that the Graduate Nursing Program will be holding the first of what it expects to be an annual series of Research Symposia.
The Research Symposium will be held on Friday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Clayton State main campus in Morrow. The focus for the symposium will be clinical research and its impact on patient outcomes. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Elizabeth Tornquist, author of From Proposal to Publication: An Informal Guide to Writing About Nursing Research. Tornquist, who is retired from the University of North Carolina, travels across the country to speak about writing and publication. According to Foster, there will also be several dynamic and nationally-known nurse researchers/nurse scientists presenting their current research… providing Clayton State students and other attendees with an empowering opportunity within their profession.
“Our graduate students are exposed to educational research, but I wanted them to see and be aware of the importance of clinical research,” explains Foster. “That was the thinking behind creating the symposium.”
Among the presenters will be Clayton State Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Dee Tanner, who will be doing a podium as well as a poster presentation. Dr. Lisa Eichelberger, dean of the College of Health at Clayton State (of which the Graduate Nursing Program is a part), will discuss the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Future of Nursing. She has been working with a group of other Georgia educators on IOM's mission. Also presenting will be Dr. Dawn Aycock and Dr. Patricia Clark, who are both faculty at Georgia State University, and will be presenting on their current research and different research methodologies.

Clayton State Reschedules Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for May 30
The Clayton State Department of Athletics has announced the rescheduling of the department’s initial Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Friday, May 30.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for Feb. 14, but had to be postponed due to inclement weather. For the rescheduled event, there will be a change of venue as the Hall of Fame Dinner and induction ceremony will be held at Crystal Lake Golf and Country Club in Hampton, Ga.
The event will begin with dinner at 7 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony. In addition to the Hall of Fame event, the Department of Athletics is also sponsoring a golf tournament earlier in the day at Crystal Lake.
The tournament will be open to all supporters of Clayton State Athletics. Check-in for the tournament will be at 10:30 a.m., with a shot-gun start at 11 a.m. The cost of the tournament is $100 per person or $400 for a four-person team.
Participants of the golf tournament are also invited to attend the Hall of Fame event later that evening. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Clayton State Department of Athletics. To register for the tournament, please call (678) 466-4678.

Clayton State Athletics Ready to Kickoff 2014 Summer Youth Athletic Camps
The Clayton State Department of Athletics is preparing to kick-off its 2014 summer youth athletic camp schedule.
The first series of camps will begin the week of June 2. All camps are held on the campus of Clayton State University. The department offers athletic camps for boys and girls in the following sports: soccer, basketball, tennis, speed development and a general sports activities camp.
The week-long camps are offered to youth ages six-to-17 years-old and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Half-day camps are also available either in the morning or in the afternoon. Campers may also choose to combine two different half-day camps if they wish.

Clayton State’s athletic camps are designed to provide the highest quality instruction in a safe, fun, and socially-enriching environment. The primary goal is for all campers to enjoy themselves while also learning and improving their skills.

The camps combine small group instruction as well as game play to ensure development of fundamental skills and game knowledge.

This notice is to inform you about Clayton State University’s new requirements related to registration.
A student’s authorization to enroll in courses at Clayton State University is conditional upon acceptance of all terms and conditions set forth in the Registration Agreement. Students must agree to the terms and conditions when they enter the registration system, and only then they will be permitted to proceed to registration. Students who do not accept the terms and conditions of the Registration Agreement will not be permitted to register in courses at Clayton State University. The complete Registration Agreement is available in the DUCK portal under Student Services
A temporary hold has been placed on your registration. Please go to the “DUCK” and agree to the terms of the Registration Agreement and the hold will be automatically lifted.
If you have any questions, please contact the Bursar’s office at (678) 466-4295.
Unfortunately, some technical issues prevented the Registration Agreement form from working properly on Mar. 31. These issues have been resolved. Please be advised that the Registration Agreement will not be displayed until the day that you are allowed to register (in accordance to your class standing – i.e. senior, junior, sophomore, freshman).

Clayton State Scholarships
Beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year (Fall Semester 2014 and Spring Semester 2015), students will no longer need to complete a scholarship application for Clayton State scholarships managed by the Financial Aid Office. We will be utilizing a new scholarship software program that will identify students who meet the criteria for each scholarship.
For the scholarships managed by the Financial Aid Office, students do not need to take any action to be considered. All accepted entering freshmen, transfer, graduate, and enrolled continuing students will be automatically considered for all scholarships for which they meet the minimum criteria.
For some scholarships additional information may be needed before an award can be made. In those cases all students who meet the minimum criteria will be sent an email to their Clayton State account informing them of their consideration for a particular scholarship. The email will contain instructions on what the student needs to do if they wish to be considered further for that particular scholarship.
The scholarship selection process will begin after Apr. 1. Students who are selected for a Clayton State scholarship that is managed by the Financial Aid Office will receive notification through their Clayton State email account. Dr. Kevin Demmitt Named Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
Clayton State is blessed to have a number of individuals able to exercise leadership in times of transition. As Dr. Micheal Crafton prepares to leave us after nearly five years of exceptional service, we are delighted to announce that Dr. Kevin Demmitt has agreed to serve as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Demmitt has served the University in wide variety of capacities over nearly 20 years, most recently in Academic Affairs as Associate Vice President for Extended Programs. Included in those leadership responsibilities are oversight of off-campus sites (especially our Henry and Peachtree City locations), on-line offerings, dual enrollment programs, as well as international programs. His breath of experiences, together with his strong commitment to academic excellence, and collaborations across programs and divisions, make him an exceptional candidate for this position. Like many of our colleagues, I am excited for this chance to work with Dr. Demmitt in this new capacity, and I know he will do an excellent job continuing the excellent work of Dr. Crafton and our other Academic Affairs colleagues.
On a personal note, I want to thank so many involved in Academic Affairs for taking time to speak with me about prospects and opportunities for Academic Affairs. Candid and thoughtful conversations about our academic futures helped me a great deal in this decision process.
We intend to begin the search process to identify the next permanent Provost almost immediately. More information on that will be shared in the very near future. In the meantime, please join me in helping to welcome Dr. Demmitt to this new position.

When there is an emergency situation that could impact the safety of our campus, whether it be a human threat or weather related, we send out notifications mainly by email and text message.
Since many of you probably see the text messages much quicker than the emails, it is essential that everyone who has a telephone capable of receiving text messages enter your number into the University system to ensure that you receive the messages. It is an “opt in” system, which means that you have to personally enter your number. As a reminder, the process is very easy and quick:

· Click on the “Swan”
· Click on “My Tab”
· Scroll down to “Emergency Text Messages” and enter your telephone number and the communications carrier (e.g. Verizon, AT&T, or other)

Dental Hygiene Clinic is Looking for Children Patients
One of Clayton State University’s best-known and busiest community outreach programs, the public Dental Hygiene Clinic run by the Department of Dental Hygiene, is looking for young patients.
According to Department Chair Dr. Gail Barnes, the Dental Hygiene Clinic has experienced a shortage of children patients, especially children with mixed dentition, that is, both baby and permanent teeth.
“To meet their graduation requirements, senior dental hygiene students are required to provide oral care for a certain number of children,” she explains.
Although Clayton State does have a lot of non-traditional students, including some young dual-enrolled students and many older adult students, Barnes notes that most Clayton State students do not have young family members who can be patients at the clinic. As a result, Barnes is soliciting support from the Clayton State community and the community at large to assist the University’s Dental Hygiene students in this endeavor.
Appointments for the Dental Hygiene Clinic are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for all ages, but especially for children. For a nominal fee, Clayton State Dental Hygiene students provide dental cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments and x-rays under the direction of dental health clinical faculty.

The Office of Student Community Standards is looking for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in being a member of the Clayton State University Hearing Panel.
University Hearing Panel members at Clayton State University play an integral role in educating their peers about their rights and responsibilities as members of the Clayton State community, as well as upholding community behavioral standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Uphold the University’s community standards as defined by the Student Code of Conduct and honor the principles of peer governance, confidentiality, and objectivity
2. Make the time commitment of three to five hours per month
3. Share in the task of making challenging and difficult decisions that support the ethical and behavioral standards of the Clayton State University community
4. Attend educational training sessions throughout the year as well as scheduled conduct hearings
5. Set aside personal and/or organizational perspective in order to establish accountability and maintain community standards
6. Maintain a high level of sensitivity, awareness, and maturity when dealing with cases of a very serious and/or delicate nature
7. Participate in and improve the conduct process as needs arise
· Must have Institutional GPA of at least a 2.5 by the end of the summer 2014 term
· Must have 24 credit hours (transfer hours are acceptable) by the end of the summer 2014 term; 6 hours for graduate students
· Must be in good Academic/Disciplinary standing (not currently on Disciplinary probation)
· Gain great experience to build your resume (especially for Legal Studies and Criminal Justice majors)

Center for Continuing Education Offering English as a Second Language Classes
The Center for Continuing Education at Clayton State University will be offering English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes at the Center for Continuing Education in Morrow beginning in April 2014.
Information Sessions and Assessments for the ESL classes will be held at the Harry S. Downs Center on the Clayton State main campus on Monday, Apr. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and on Wednesday, Apr. 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the CSU East location.

BCW Public Comment Period Currently Underway
The Babies Can’t Wait (BCW) Program is Georgia’s statewide early intervention system for infants and toddlers, ages 0-3 years, with special needs. The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is the lead agency for administration of the BCW system and BCW is administered locally in Clayton County by the Clayton County Board of Health.
As required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part C section 34 CFR §§303.110-303.113, DPH has published its Part C BCW application in order to give the public an opportunity to comment on the application and BCW policy.
