Water Shut Off Postponed to Aug. 30
The Clayton County Water Authority will not be able to make the scheduled water repairs today, Friday, Aug. 23, but will shut the water off on Friday, Aug. 30 instead.
The planned water shut off times for Aug. 30 are now from 8 a.m. to 2: p.m.
This will affect the following buildings: Athletic & Fitness, Spivey Hall, Music Education, the Downs Center and the SAC (Including the soccer field).
We are sorry for any inconveniences this may cause. Please let Facilities Management know if you have any questions.
Campus Road Closing Today
On Friday, Aug. 23, Snelling Drive will be closed during the day in front of the Facilities Management Building to repair a sewer line. While the road is closed, traffic coming from the north entrance to the campus on Snelling will be detoured through the D parking lot to Caldwell Drive, and traffic coming from the south side of campus (E, F, G, and H lots) should take Caldwell Drive to exit the campus. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience.
Clayton State Announces a New Scholarship Initiative; “Dream Makers”
As a means of addressing the ongoing challenge of students being stretched by increasing educational costs and the need to “make ends meet,” Clayton State University has announced a new scholarship initiative, “Dream Makers.”
Dream Makers is a multi-faceted approach to helping those students who are either high achievers, are close to completing their degree, or both. Three separate initiatives will be a part of the Dream Makers program; Dream Makers Scholarships, the Loch Leaders Investment Fund, and Laker Completion Grants.
Dream Maker Scholarships will carry the name of the donors and will have broad selection criteria established by the individual donor. Each scholarship will be given to one student.
The Loch Leaders Investment Fund will recognize high achievers – those full-time students with a GPA of 3.5 or greater who demonstrate unmet need. A select group of students will be designated as Loch Leaders each year with priority given in order to: continuing students; new freshmen; returning students; and transfer students.
Many Clayton State students are the first in their family to attend college. Completing their coursework and receiving their degree is a significant accomplishment that can be postponed due to family situations, work demands, and, very often, financial challenges. The Laker Completion Grants will impact those students who are near degree completion and demonstrate unmet need. Priority will be given to those closest to degree completion with unmet need and a GPA of at least 2.5.
Clayton State Soccer Teams to Host Alumni Soccer Matches Saturday at Laker Field
It will be a “Battle of the Ages” tomorrow at Clayton State’s Laker Field.
Both the Clayton State women’s and men’s soccer programs will host their annual alumni games on Saturday. Kickoff for the women’s match will be 2 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. start for the men’s match. Admission is free to both games.
Laker head coaches Pete Petersen and Gareth O’ Sullivan expect approximately 60 alumni soccer players to return for the event.
“The alumni matches have evolved into a great event for our programs,” says women’s coach O’Sullivan. “It is great to see and meet some of the former Laker players and have them connected to our program. These players laid the groundwork for the success of our teams today.”
Both Laker teams are gearing up for the start of their seasons in early September. The women’s team will open its regular season on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s team hosting Tampa the same evening at 8 p.m.

"Hot Dogs with Hynes" for Students, Aug. 29
The Clayton State University Student Government Association (SGA) and the Clayton State Department of Campus Life will be having a special events on Thursday, Aug. 29.
It’s a hot dog cookout at the Clayton State Student Activities Center (SAC), but it’s not just your average weenie roast, since it will feature a chance for Clayton State students to fellowship with Clayton State President Dr. Thomas J. Hynes.
The purpose of “Hot Dogs with Hynes” is to offer all Clayton State students an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with the University president, while also, while enjoying hot dogs. Hynes will offer a few words about his vision for Clayton State and take some questions from students.
This event will also be a part of a campus celebration of College Colors Day as a way to promote one of SGA’s goals of promoting spirit and pride at the University.
“Hot Dogs with Hynes” will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the ballroom of the SAC.
Operation Study Kickoff, Aug. 29
The kickoff for Operation Study will be on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Lecture Hall, room B-10, from 3:40 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. The kickoff will feature a learning styles presentation from Dr. Mark Daddona.

New & Improved Clayton State – Fayette Hours
Beginning Monday, Aug. 19, most services will be available for Clayton State -- Fayette.
These services include software installations & troubleshooting; in addition to limited hardware troubleshooting. These services will continue throughout the semester on Mondays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Appointment slots are filling up fast. This is the last week to make an appointment for software installations. Be sure to download and install the LANDesk agent before your appointment for faster service.
Walk-up installations will begin next week on Aug. 26.

CEC Paint Party, Aug. 23

Service Learning Series Institute Kick Off, Aug. 24
The Department of Campus Life will kick off the Service Learning Series Institute on Saturday, Aug. 24, in the Student Activities Center Ballroom C, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The Service Learning Institute will introduce students to the concepts of service learning and help develop students’ commitment to public service and learning. There will be educational sessions on community service, civic engagement, social justice, and volunteerism. After the educational sessions, students will volunteer at pre-chosen local service projects that focus on a specific community need. By the end of the day, student participants will leave with a better understanding of community service, volunteerism, and civic engagement; how to connect with local community partners; and how to set up and track their volunteer service hours.

Volunteers will assist with preparing the soil, plant seeds, weed, harvest produce and more. Volunteers will learn how to grow healthy produce and reduce food budgets while getting to know neighbors and instilling pride in the community.

Volunteers will help with organizing and maintaining the book and periodical collections; re-shelving and categorizing books; and assist with other tasks as needed.
· Keep Forest Park Beautiful: Clean City = Happy City!!
Volunteers will spread out over a section of the Forest Park community to beautify the area and spread some smiles.
· Rainbow House: Be The Good!!
Volunteers will assist with facility maintenance, beautification projects and other tasks as needed.

Chair Upgrades in the Baker Center, Starting Sept. 3
Facilities Management is in the process of upgrading 50+ chairs in the James M. Baker University Center, mainly in the student lounge areas.
The project will start the week of Sept. 3. We will be reupholstering lounge chairs and removing up to 15 chairs at a time for work. The next set of 15 chairs will be sent to workshop after we receive and return the first set of finished chairs. This process will continue till we have completed the entire scope of project.
This is to inform you that seating will be limited in certain lounge study areas for up to two weeks at a time. The project will start from the fourth floor.

LOL Applications Available Soon
The Office of Orientation and New Student Programs is looking for outstanding students to serve as Laker Orientation Leaders.
The Laker Orientation Leader, LOL, is a mentoring leadership position where students have the opportunity to work closely with incoming freshman, transfer, non-traditional students and their families and assist them with their transition to Clayton State University. LOLs work closely with academic advisors, professional staff, and each other to implement the Orientation program. LOLs also get to work behind the scenes planning and preparing for programs for new students.
To be an Orientation Leader, students must meet the following requirements:
· Minimum 2.4 GPA at the close of the Fall Semester
· Be in good standing with the University
· Interest in a leadership position
· Desire to work with new students
· Open-minded and creative

Don’t Feed The Wildlife!
As you know there is a variety of wildlife on and around our campus with which we for the most part pleasantly coexist; primarily the geese that are highly visible.
However, there is also an occasional sighting of a feral cat or raccoons. Although there may be a temptation to feed some of these wildlife when you are sitting by one of our lakes or walking on campus, please do not do so. It just encourages more brazen contacts with humans and a closer approach to our facilities. Also, since they are forms of wildlife, their temperament and health conditions are unknown.
If anyone has an uncomfortable encounter with any form of wildlife on campus, please contact the Office of Public Safety as soon as possible for a response.
Emergency Alerts via Text Messaging from Public Safety
Welcome from the Department of Public Safety to all new students, faculty and staff, and welcome back to all those returning.
As a public service, the Department of Public Safety sends out emergency alert messages as needed through the use of outdoor sirens, emails, campus telephone system, and/or text messaging. Since text messaging is generally the most effective mode of communication, it is very important that all students, faculty and staff enter their cell numbers into the campus emergency alert network to receive these messages when sent out.
Note that your number has to personally entered. The information is not automatically extracted from your personal data. Here is the process that we encourage all to follow for first time entries or when you change your cell number or the carrier:
· Log into the SWAN at the University’s website
· Link on “My Tab” in tool bar.
· Scroll down to section titled “Emergency Text Messages”
· Enter your cell number and the carrier (e.g. AT&T, Verizon, or other)
· Click on “Submit” and you’re done with this easy yet important process.

Parking on Campus
With the beginning of fall semester, there is always a big demand for the most convenient parking spaces on campus. However, at peak times of the day and night, that can be challenging.
Some advice to new members of our campus community and as a reminder for those returnees; parking lots G and H, which are located behind Public Safety, are two lots that are very popular and fill up quick. A suggested alternative for a location where parking is always available are parking lots K and L, which are located near the Student Activities Center and the tennis courts.
Although walking from those lots may take you a few more minutes than from one of the more popular lots, you will avoid both the stress of searching for closer spaces and the time spent doing so.
New Parking Permits
The parking permits/decals for the previous school year will expire on Wednesday July 31. New permits are currently available for pick up at the Department of Public Safety, with valid dates from Aug. 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014.
Faculty/staff will be issued the traditional blue colored permits. However, there are some changes to the student permits. Students living in Laker Hall will be issued gold colored permits and those living in Clayton Station will be issued green colored permits. All other students will be issued orange colored permits. However, student vehicles bearing any of these three colors may park in any areas designated for student parking.
To give advance notice to all students, especially those new to our campus; to date our parking patrol and police officers have just been issuing warnings for parking violations. We occasionally do this as a courtesy for those new to the campus at the start of the Fall semester to assist in their familiarization of the campus parking areas.
However, starting this week we will begin issuing citations for the violations, which result in fines. Please pay attention to the parking signs in the parking lots and review the campus parking rules and regulations that are on line at the Public Safety website. Hard copies can also be obtained at our office in the Student Services Center.
Also, one of the more common violations is having no decal in your window. If you have not yet received your parking decal, please come by our office as soon as possible to pick one up. There is no additional fee for a decal as it is included in your student fees. Thanks in advance for your cooperation with our rules and regulations.
Earn Course Credit with Student Media
It’s not too late to sign up to earn course credit for working on The Bent Tree, Clayton State internet Radio (CSiR), and Clayton State Television (CSTV).
The Visual and Performing Arts Department collaborates each semester with Clayton State’s Student Media Organizations to offer interested students the opportunity to earn credit for working with one of the three organizations. Starting for spring semester students can select from one of four "tracks"

This opportunity is open to any Clayton State University students and counts as an elective for most majors. Experience is not necessary, but encouraged. Course credit ranges from one to four hours.
Attendance at first meeting is MANDATORY. The meeting date and time will be determined. Syllabi for the class will be handed out at the first organizational meeting.
Meetings for the Student Media organizations have not yet been determined for spring.
JOUR 3011 is for students interested in newswriting and photography.
JOUR 3012 is for students interested in radio production, television production, and editing.

Student Government Association: Freshman Senator Seats
The Student Government Association (SGA) is made up of elected student representatives who work in an advisory capacity to the Division of Student Affairs and other administrative units to formulate legislation, actions, and policies that positively impact the student population of Clayton State University. The basic function of the SGA is to provide for the general welfare of the student body by providing a means of student input and opinion in the organization and operation of student affairs. The SGA shall work to facilitate communication between the students, faculty, and administration.
