Clayton State/ Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra Concert, Oct. 8
The Clayton State University Orchestra and the Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra will be presenting a concert by French composers on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall.
The works to be performed are the Petite Suite by Debussy, the Symphony in D Minor by Franck and the Fanfare from La Peri by Dukas.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children over the age of six. Tickets may be purchased through the Spivey Hall box office or at the door.
Eighth Annual Showcase Clayton, Oct. 17
On Thursday, Oct. 17, the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce will host the premier business and community expo, the Eighth Annual Showcase Clayton.
This free event is presented by Clayton State University and will be held at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, Recreation Outreach Center, 148 Church St., Jonesboro, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
This event is a great opportunity for businesses to exhibit their products and services, as well as network with the community and fellow business leaders. The expo is also a family-friendly event and will include special entertainment just for children. The evening will be filled with networking, food, door prizes and festivities.

Morrow High School Fall Festival, Sept. 21
Morrow High School will be having its Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a parade from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by the Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the football field at Morrow High School, 2299 Old Rex Morrow Rd. Make sure to stop by and say hello to William Walker at the Clayton State Recruitment and Admissions table.
Teacher Education Lunch and Learn Series, Today
Teacher Education is once again organizing a Lunch and Learn series for faculty and staff who want learn about using technology. These sessions will take place in A&S 205 in the Resource Room.
Faculty and staff, both novices and experts in using technology, are encouraged to bring a lunch and come share in the knowledge. We held one session already, but here is the rest of the list for the fall.

Clayton State Testing Center Relocating to Clayton State – East
The Clayton State University Testing Center, which provides standardized college-related testing for both Clayton State students and the general public, will be relocating to Arbor Hall at Clayton State – East during the next two weeks.
Testing Center Director Sharon Long and her professional staff, Lolita Lighting and Donna Taffar, will be closing their current location on the first floor of the Clayton State Library on Thursday, Sept. 12, and moving to room 121 of Arbor Hall at Clayton State – East, 5823 Trammell Rd., starting on Friday, Sept. 13. The move will take until Friday, Sept. 27, and the Testing Center will re-open in Arbor Hall on Monday, Sept. 30.
The Testing Center’s services include college entrance exams, placement exams, exit testing, and program-specific entrance tests. Services also include independent study (distance learning) exams, the TOEFL, and other program testing.
In between Sept. 13 and Sept. 30, the Testing Center will be considered closed, however, according to Long, they hope to answer phones or at least return phone calls as much as possible after the phones are reconnected. Constitution Week, Sept. 17 to Sept. 20
Clayton State University Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Joseph Corrado has announced the events for Clayton State’s upcoming annual celebration of Constitution Week. All Constitution Week events are free and open to the public
Tuesday, Sept. 17; from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Writer’s Studio (Arts and Sciences room 224) — Screening of the “It’s a Free Country” which is a part of the PBS TV series on the Constitution. Refreshments will be provided.
Wednesday, Sept. 18; from 11 a.m. to noon in the ballrooms of the Student Activities Center – “Constitutional Debate on Guns on College Campuses: Defensive or Offensive?” This debate will be moderated by Corrado, an expert on gun control who has been interviewed on the subject by NBC Nightly News.
Thursday, Sept. 19; from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall — The Second Annual Civil Constitutional discussion, “Government monitoring of personal communications: A Violation of the Fourth Amendment?” Representatives from the Clayton County Voter Registrar’s Office will assist students to register to vote before and after this event.
On Friday, Sept. 20; from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., in room UC267 of the James M. Baker University Center, Constitution Week will feature A New York Times talk facilitated by attorney Herbert Adams, “Self-defense in Georgia: Lessons from the Zimmerman Trial.” A free lunch will be provided to all of those that RSVP to Corrado via email at firstname.lastname@example.org by Thursday, Sept. 19 at 3:30 p.m.
“We will be talking about stand your ground laws generally, and in particular Georgia’s stand your ground law,” says Adams. “The George Zimmerman trial will serve as background for the discussion.”
“My goal is to bring out the opinions of the Clayton State community, and to help the community understand the issues,” says Adams. “As is the case with the Second Amendment, it is important to know what the law actually says and how it is applied before determining whether it needs to be changed.”
For this talk, Adams promises to give some history about the genesis of stand your ground laws as a variation of self-defense, noting, “It’s a subject that generates a lot of emotion and interest, like the Second Amendment. Sometimes that emotion is not based on fact. I want to make sure people know the facts, and having become aware of the facts, decide for themselves how the law should be applied to those facts.”
Adams also points out that, if individuals feel “stand your ground” laws should be changed, there’s a way to do it. “Except for regulatory or judicial action, every single law in this nation, either locally or nationally, was passed by a legislature,” he reminds us. “And every law that’s changed is changed the same way. If you want to change the law, there’s a process for doing so. Thus, it’s important to channel your emotions in a constructive way.”
SBDC Schedules Workshops in McDonough (Sept. 17) and Morrow (Sept. 26)
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) next two workshops are scheduled to be held at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce in McDonough, and Clayton State – East in Morrow.
SBDC’s popular Starting a Business Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, 1709 Georgia Hwy. 20 West, McDonough.
SBDC is also offering a marketing class/workshop on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at Clayton State – East, 5823 Trammell Rd., Morrow. “Finding & Refining Competitive Advantage” will be held in room 115 of Arbor Hall at Clayton State – East. This workshop is designed to help attendees find, measure, and use their competitive advantage to market their products or services. The cost is $49 per person.

Clayton State University September Service Learning Series, Sept. 18, Sept. 21
The Clayton State University Department of Campus Life will host its monthly Service Learning Series on Wednesday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 21. This month’s discussion and service project will focus on literacy.
On Sept. 18, Dr. Amy Sanford and Dr. Mary Cynthia Thompson, assistant professors of English and Reading Education, will facilitate a discussion on the history of literacy, how literacy empowers individuals and communities and strategies and resources that will build and improve literacy. Bring your lunch and join us in room B12 of the Lecture Hall from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Service Learning Discussion is free and open to all students, faculty and staff.
On Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, Clayton State students will volunteer at the Books for Africa Warehouse in Smyrna. This volunteer opportunity is limited to 20 participants. Transportation will be provided for the first 10 who request it. Participants willing to carpool are greatly appreciated. Weather Channel VP to Visit Management Principles and Organization Behavior Class, Sept. 18
Matthew Harrison, the vice president of Talent Management for the Weather Company (commonly known as the Weather Channel) will visit Dr. Leon Prieto’s “Management Principles and Organization Behavior” class on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The class is from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. in the Arts and Sciences building, room G229. Interested faculty and staff are invited to attend.
Information Sessions on Revisions to the Contracts Review Process, Sept. 18
As of July 1, 2013, the Georgia legislature enacted statutory changes to the process for entering contracts with public employers. There is now a requirement that, prior to entering contracts for labor or services using either a bidding process or when the contract amount exceeds $2,499.99 in value, contractors (and subcontractors) must submit signed and notarized affidavits which either attest to their compliance with the terms of the Federal Work Authorization Program, or state a specific exemption from this requirement.
Although informative documents are available for review at the Business and Operations website,www.clayton.edu/contract-administration, University officials will host information sessions on the following dates, times and locations to further educate the campus community. Those faculty and staff who are either occasionally or frequently involved in the contract review process are strongly encouraged to attend. However, the information sessions are open to anyone to attend. No RSVP is needed. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2 p.m. at University Center, room 272.
Furniture Expo, Sept. 19, Furniture Policies Training, Sept. 23
Facilities Management, in collaboration with Procurement, is organizing a Furniture Expo on Thursday, Sept. 19, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Atrium and room 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center.
The exposition will showcase various lines of furniture products and furniture manufacturer on state contract. Campus clients will have the opportunity to interact with various manufacturers, who will demonstrate their products.
There are more than 20 manufacturers that have confirmed that they will be represented at the Expo, making this a great opportunity for both manufacturers and clients. There will be lot of giveaways and food at the event. Bring your business card for giveaway drawings.
Facilities Management, in collaboration with Procurement, will also be organizing Furniture Policies and Procedures training on Monday, Sept. 23 in the Downs Center, in room 101. There will be two sessions, at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m. Come to learn the new policies and procedures for furniture purchase.
Tips and Resources for Effectively Supporting the Success of Student Veterans Transitioning from Military Life to Campus Life, Sept. 20
The Clayton State Veterans Resource Center will present a faculty and staff professional development opportunity, “Tips and Resources for Effectively Supporting the Success of Student Veterans Transitioning from Military Life to Campus Life” on Friday, Sept. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. in room UC 322 of the James M. Baker University Center. Lunch will be provided for the participants.
Presenters will come from the Veterans Resource Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Disability Resource Center in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs Transition Team.
This is a chance to gain a better understanding of the unique needs of student veterans and the resources available to assist in their college success.

Faculty and Staff Safe Space Training, Sept. 20
Safe Space is a national program designed to provide a supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members of the campus community; increase the visible presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) allies and places that are “safe” for LGBT students across campus; and dismiss negative stereotypes and present accurate information about the LGBT population. Individuals who have completed the Safe Space Training may post the Safe Space symbol at their offices, backpacks, or binders as a way to designate themselves as safe allies for LGBT students, colleagues and friends.
Since the inception of the Safe Space Training program at Clayton State in 2008, more than 150 individuals have participated in the program. Given the growth of our LGBT community at Clayton State, we would like to increase the number of visible allies to improve the chances of this population excelling academically, socially, and professionally at the University.
The Faculty and Staff training will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the SAC Ballroom A.

Facilities Advisory Committee Requests, Due Sept. 20
It is the time of the year when Facilities Advisory Committee is calling for requests for facilities’ modifications. The Modification/Space Request Form is located on the Facilities Management web page at http://www.clayton.edu/facilities/planningdesign/facilitiescommittee.The completed form should be submitted to the appropriate vice president for signature and transmitted to the committee by Sept. 20, 2013.
For new people on campus we would like to give a brief overview of Facilities Committee tasks. The Facilities Advisory Committee provides input and makes recommendations for new facilities or space needs and modifications to existing spaces, as well as dealing with facilities-related issues and long-term planning. Requests are reviewed at semi-annual Facilities Advisory Committee meetings in October and April.
Not all requests will lead to PowerPoint presentations before the committee. Vice Presidents will be notified by Sept. 25 whether they will need to submit presentations. Presentation submittals are due on Oct. 11, 2013. Presentations to the Facilities Committee will be conducted the week of Oct. 21 by those confirmed by the committee.
Please be advised that currently the availability of space is very limited. Facilities Modification/ Space Request form has been adjusted for you to justify your request with reference to the Space Utilization report. This adjustment is due to recently received Space Utilization Study report conducted by the Board of Regents, showing various campuses’ space utilization metrics. In particular, Clayton State University features excess of conference and meeting spaces. It is getting more difficult to justify new space without showing compelling needs that are aligned with institution’s strategic plan and any other documentation that clearly and objectively supports the needs.
CAS Announces New Weekend Walk-In Math Tutoring Services
During the month of August, the Center for Academic Success performed a survey to determine which weekend days/times would be preferred for walk-in math tutoring services during the fall semester. Based on the responses from 288 participating Clayton State students, the CAS will now offer walk-in math tutoring services on Saturdays beginning Sept. 21, through Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In addition to providing important feedback to the CAS, all participating students were given the opportunity to have their names entered into a drawing for a $25 deposit on their Laker Card. On Sept. 3, two drawings were held, and the lucky winners were Tiffany Rawls and Markie Vaz.

CNN VP to Visit Management Principles and Organization Behavior Class, Oct. 16

Spivey Hall Organist-in-Residence Richard Morris Passes
Spivey Hall Organist-in-Residence Richard Morris passed away Thursday night following injuries he sustained in a car accident the previous Sunday. In addition to his duties at Spivey Hall, Richard was Organist at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church (587 Landers Dr SW, Mableton, GA 30126), where a funeral mass will be said for him on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m.,Richard’s partner, Robert Serredell, requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in support of the church choir.
Spivey Hall will pay tribute to Richard’s memory with a special concert later this season, details of which will be announced once they are confirmed.
Door/Window/Office Decorating Contest in Support of Laker Athletics

2013 Required Employee Training
It’s that time of the year for all faculty and staff to complete training required by Clayton State University, Board of Regents, and the State of Georgia.
The Right to Know (RTK), Ethics, Security Awareness, Campus Vehicle Use and Sexually Harassment courses must all be completed on an annual basis. During this time period, we ask that you also take a moment to review the updated Clayton State University Employee Handbook and complete a new Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form. The signed Acknowledgement Form and five required courses should be completed by Dec. 1, 2013.
Here are the instructions to access and complete these trainings:
· Use your current Clayton State University user name and password to log into Employee Training.
· Review the Employee Handbook – Complete the Employee Acknowledgement Form and forward to HR.
· Required Trainings
o Right to Know (RTK) – At the end of the session, enter the requested information and submit.
o Ethics – Presentation, Assessment and Compliance Agreement
§ Basic – New Faculty/Staff
§ Refresher 2011 – Faculty/Staff active as of Dec. 31, 2010
