The Clayton State Theatre’s Spring 2013 Production, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Opens Tonight at the Clayton County Performance Arts Center

That’s just a small dose of humor from Clayton State Theatre’s upcoming production of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Oscar Wilde’s most successful play. This play pokes fun at the English aristocracy of the late 19th
Century. Through its witty humor, the play takes you on a journey of discovery in hopes of finding out the “vital importance of being earnest.”
In collaboration with the Clayton County Performing Arts Center (CCPAC), this is the first time in the Clayton State Theatre’s history that a production will be opening at CCPAC before coming to Clayton State Theatre.
“We are very excited about this opportunity and look forward to making this an ongoing effort,” says Shontelle Thrash, director of the Clayton State Theatre program, in regard to this dream being made real.
Performance dates for “The Importance of Being Earnest,” are as follows… Clayton County Performing Arts Center: Mar. 29, at 7:30 p.m., Mar. 30, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. There will be a talk-back on Mar. 30 after the 2:30 p.m. performance.
“The Importance of Being Earnest,” will then move to the Clayton State Theatre, room G132 of the University’s Arts & Sciences Building, on Apr. 11, 13, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m.
General admission is $5; Clayton State students are admitted free with their Laker ID. “The Importance of Being Earnest,” will showcase talented actors from Columbus, Morrow, southeast Atlanta, and Jonesboro.

CBS Sports Network to Feature Zac Bradley Tonight
Clayton State University’s Zac Bradley will be the feature story on tonight’s halftime show of the nationally-televised NCAA Division II National Championship women’s basketball game. Te game is being broadcast by the CBS Sports Network. Tip-off for the game will be 8 p.m. (Eastern) with the halftime show at approximately 8:45 p.m.

The feature story opportunity resulted from Clayton State’s men’s team playing in the CBS Sports Network NCAA Division II Game of the Week earlier this year. The Lakers played in the nationally-televised game on Feb. 16 at Montevallo.
“The producers of the feature liked the story so much that they decided to make it their marquee story of the season and show during their top NCAA Division II basketball broadcast, the women’s national championship game,” says Gid Rowell, assistant athletic director for external relations.
Bradley, a native of Riverdale, Ga., and a former prep standout at North Clayton High School, was in an unfortunate accident in the spring of 2011. Leaving the Clayton State campus during a terrible storm, a tree fell on his car entrapping him inside. After being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, Bradley underwent multiple surgeries on his brain, neck and spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed. He then went through extensive rehab at Atlanta’s Shepherd Spinal Center during the summer.
CBS Sports Network will feature Bradley’s recovery over the last 22 months. Along with interviewing Bradley, the news crew met with Dr. Melanie Poudevigne, one of his professors, head coach Gordon Gibbons and his staff and some of the current and former players. In addition, the crew filmed Bradley playing in his wheelchair rugby league at the Shepherd Center.
Bradley’s recovery over the last year has been remarkable. After his rehab, he returned to Clayton State and took a full load of classes in the Spring of 2012, where he made a perfect 4.0 that semester. Majoring in health and fitness management, he currently holds a 3.8 grade point average.
He remains involved with the basketball program, sitting on the bench at home games and is often at practice. As a freshman in 2010-11, Bradley played in all 29 games for the 19-10 Lakers.

is conducted by Dr. Richard Bell, with choreographer Kathleen Kelly, and presented by the Clayton State Department of Visual and Performing Arts/Division of Music. Admission is $10 for adults, and $5 for students. Clayton State faculty, staff, and students are free with their Laker Card.

Menace becomes hilarity, wrongs are righted, and even the ancestral specter gets to live happily ever after. Obviously, a dream made real.

Women’s Forum Luncheon to Feature Special Guest Speaker Ashley Vicos, Apr. 16
The Clayton State Women’s Forum luncheon on Tuesday, Apr. 16 will feature a special guest speaker, Clayton State alumnus and Food Network star Ashley Vicos. The luncheon will run from noon to 1:30 p.m., in room 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center.
Vicos is a resident of Henry County who has been professionally decorating cakes for 14 years. She owns “Sweet Ashley’s” a private baking studio in McDonough specializing in custom cake work. The star of her won reality TV show on the Food Network, “Have Cake Will Travel,” Vicos has also been featured on other Food Network shows as well as on TLC, CBS and NBC.

Call for Volunteers – “Letter from Birmingham Jail” 50th Anniversary
Tuesday, Apr. 16, 2013 will mark the 50th
anniversary of the day that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. began writing his iconic “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” In celebration, the Department of Campus Life, in collaboration with the Clayton State Library will host public readings of this historic document on Main Street of the James M. Baker University Center throughout the day.
Campus Life is looking for volunteers who would like to read aloud short selections from the letter at various time blocks throughout the day.
Your participation is vital to the success of this event and will serve as a public demonstration that Dr. King’s ideals live on and that the fight against injustice continues. This event is free and open to the public.

continues on Friday, Mar. 29 with a New York Times Talk on “Environmental Change and the Role of the Government in Stopping Catastrophes.”
In addition to discussing a very current subject that potentially affects every single person in the United States, the upcoming New York Times Talk, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., in room UC267 of the James M. Baker University Center, will feature two notable co-facilitators, Clayton State Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Jacqueline Jordan, and Bryan M. Myers, energy and climate change coordinator for Region 4 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Clayton State Biology Department Has Eminent Speakers this Semester, Starting Mar. 29
Clayton State University’s Biology Department’s Eminent Speaker Series for the spring 2013 semester will feature presentations from professors at the University of Georgia, Emory University, and Mercer University.
The three presentations are scheduled for Friday, Mar. 29, Friday, Apr. 12, and Friday, Apr. 19, in each case in room 107 of the Laboratory Annex Building (The L.A.B.) on the Clayton State campus. All presentations will start at 2 p.m., and last until approximately 3:30 p.m.
The Mar. 29 seminar will feature an especially prominent speaker, Dr. Alan Covich, professor, Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia, and president of the International Association for Ecology. He is also the former president of the Ecological Society of America, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, and the North American Benthological Society. Covich will be speaking on, "Freshwater ecosystem services- some case studies of how people benefit from biodiversity."
On Apr. 12, Emory University School of Medicine Associate Professor of Medicine Dr. Toby Schonfeld, will speak on, “Ethics in Research.” Schonfeld is also director, Master of Arts in Bioethics, Center for Ethics; and co-director, Program for Scholarly Integrity, Laney Graduate School.
Finally, on Apr. 19, Dr. Rick McCann, director, Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, and associate professor of biochemistry at the Mercer University School of Medicine, will speak on “Cell Adhesion Assemblies and the Origins of Animal Multicellularity.”
Vendor Expo 2013 Coming to Campus, Mar. 29
Procurement Services proudly announces the first-ever Vendor Expo on Friday, Mar. 29. The Vendor Expo will be held in the Harry S. Downs Center, on the first floor in room 101 and the Atrium, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The object of the Vendor Expo is to create an opportunity for suppliers (AKA the vendors) to meet departmental decision makers (AKA purchasers) and other faculty and staff who purchase for their departments throughout the year. The Vendor Expo is also an opportunity for the campus to meet vendors and suppliers and to ask questions about the products and services the vendors provide.
Thirty-five vendors already committed to coming and several are bringing items to give away. Procurement Services will also do drawings throughout the day for even more prizes.
Clayton State to Host Georgia Psychology Society’s Eighth Annual Meeting, Mar. 30
Clayton State University will be hosting the Georgia Psychological Society’s Eighth Annual Meeting on Saturday, Mar. 30.
The conference schedule calls for welcome, refreshments and registration from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., followed by a general poster session (9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.), and the keynote address. After lunch will come two additional poster sessions (from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.), followed by presentations and symposia.
Registration is $20 for students, $30 for faculty and professionals, includes yearly membership in the Georgia Psychological Society (GPS). Lunch and mid-morning snacks will be provided at conference. Clayton State’s Spring Break Soccer Camp Starts, Apr. 1
The Clayton State University Athletic Department will be holding Spring Break Soccer camps in April for boys and girls ages six to 13.
There will be two sessions, and each session will offer a half-day camp and a full-day camp. Session One runs from Monday, Apr. 1 to Friday, Apr. 5. Session Two is from Monday, Apr. 8 to Friday, Apr. 12. The full-day camps cost $140 per person and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The half-day camps are 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and cost $85. Free supervision is provided for early drop-off and late pick-up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be an additional charge for supervision prior to 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m. A snack bar will be available for lunch purchases for all camps.
The girls and boys soccer camps are designed to develop individual technical skills, including passing, dribbling, ball control, shooting, and tackling, as well as team tactics.
The camps combine small group instruction as well as game play to ensure development of fundamental skills and game knowledge.

Transplant Awareness Event, Apr. 3
Clayton State student Rosalynn Gresham needs a kidney transplant to win her battle against Lupus. And while that may make her unique among the student body, she is hardly the only person who needs that kind of help.
On Wednesday, Apr. 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center, Clayton State Professor of Criminal Justice Dr. Sarah Stein will be leading an information event to raise awareness about Gresham’s condition and provide people with the information they need to begin the testing process to be a donor. It’s an opportunity to get the word out on how people can get tested as a match for Gresham (or anyone else needing a transplant.)

Former Laker Golfer Nelson to Compete in ‘”Tough Mudder” Event to Raise Money for Zac Bradley Fund, Apr. 6
Clayton State University golfer Clark Nelson finished up his collegiate career last fall, and now as he works to complete his degree, the native of Scotland has picked up a new sport that is about as opposite as golf as possible.
Instead of strolling down a well-manicured and peaceful golf course on a spring afternoon, Nelson will compete in a new type of running event, called a “Tough Mudder.” Designed by British Special Forces to test your all-around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie, Tough Mudder events are described as hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses.
Nelson will compete in a Tough Mudder event on Saturday, Apr. 6 in Augusta, Ga.
Another element of Tough Mudder events is that participants often compete in them to raise money for charitable organizations. As a fellow Laker student-athlete with Zac Bradley, Nelson has decided that the proceeds from him competing in the race will be donated to help the Zac Bradley Fund.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center (SCSAC), the Clayton State University Office of Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Clayton State University chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will host the Annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month during April 2013. Events for the month include the Clothes Line Project, the Clothes Line Project T-Shirt Drive, Bringing in the Bystander: Bystander Intervention Training, and Take Back the Night.
The Clothesline Project will run from Apr. 8 to Apr. 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center. The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to the violence against women, men, and children. Clayton State students, faculty and staff will decorate shirts to represent victim’s experience to share the experiences of one in three females and one in seven males.
To effectively make The Clothesline Project a success Psi Chi is asking everyone to dig through their linens and donate lightly-used, plain-colored T-Shirts for the Clothesline Project. White T-Shirts are preferred, but any plain colored T-Shirt would be helpful and beneficial. T-Shirts can be dropped off at Dr. Pinar Gurkas’ office, room 109 of the Clayton State Natural & Behavioral Sciences Building.
Clayton State Jazz Combo to Play Outdoor Concert, Apr. 10
The Clayton State Jazz Combo will be playing a free outdoor concert on Wednesday, Apr. 10.
The Jazz Combo will be performing starting at noon at the Eugene Lawson Amphitheater, located on the Clayton State campus between the James M. Baker University Center and Spivey Hall.
SBDC Starting Your Business Workshop, Apr. 11
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be holding a “Starting Your Business Workshop” on Thursday, Apr. 11, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce in McDonough.
If you are considering starting a small business, and want to make your dream real, this workshop is a crucial first step.
Since lack of planning is one of the top reasons new businesses fail, attending this comprehensive workshop is one of the most important decisions to make prior to opening a business. A detailed business start-up book, "How to Start a Business: A Guide for Georgia Entrepreneurs," and other handouts are provided.
The cost of the workshop is $69 per person, with a 50 percent discount for current Clayton State students, faculty and staff, who should contact Heather Chaney for discount code. School of Nursing to Host Annual Cultural Diversity Conference, Apr. 11
The School of Nursing at Clayton State University, via its federal Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant, is preparing to host its Annual Cultural Diversity Conference. The purpose of the Cultural Diversity Conference is to increase the cultural competence of faculty and students at the School of Nursing.
The conference will be held on Thursday, Apr. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon in Student Activities Center Ballrooms, A, B and C. Although the conference is directed to Clayton State faculty and students, the public is invited to attend on a space-available basis. Registration will close once seating capacity has been reached, and all registrants must be confirmed (via an attendance roster) prior to attending the event. The keynote speaker will be Louis W. Sullivan, MD, former United States Department of Health and Human Services Secretary (1989-1993), president emeritus, Morehouse School of Medicine, and chairman of the board of the National Health Museum in Atlanta. Sullivan will be speaking on “Eliminating Health Disparities in the United States” and will be reviewing health of the U.S. population, including disparities in health status and in access to health care, describing the strategies which are effective in decreasing disparities in health status, noting economic impact of health disparities, and articulating the role of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity in meeting health care challenges in America.
Also speaking will be Rick Zoucha, Ph.D., RN, associate professor at the Duquesne University School of Nursing. Zoucha will be speaking on “Understanding the concepts of cultural confianza in Mexican Americans: Listening to the Voice of La Raza.”
Clayton State SBDC PlanSmart at the Fayette Chamber. Apr. 12
Clayton State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has announced a new series of classes, PlanSmart, to be held at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce.
PlanSmart will consist of three classes, held on Mar. 15, Apr. 12 and May 17. The cost is $69 per class, or $150 for the entire series. A $10 Fayette Chamber member discount is available for either individual classes or the entire series, and breakfast is provided for all three classes.
The second class is “Finding & Refining Competitive Advantage.” Scheduled for Friday, Apr. 12, it will also run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fayette Chamber. The class will look at finding, measuring and developing competitive advantage and making unique aspects of a business part of a marketing message.
The third class, “Pricing for Profit” will be on Friday, May 17 and will focus on better pricing tactics and strategies and matching customer pricing behaviors with pricing strategies. This class is also from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fayette Chamber.

Dr. Hynes to Appear on Atlanta Community Profiles Radio Show, Apr. 13
Clayton State University President Dr. Thomas J. Hynes will be a guest on the radio show Atlanta Community Profiles next month. The program will be recorded on Tuesday, Apr. 9 for broadcast on Saturday, Apr. 13 at 2 p.m. on Talk920AM.
Hynes was invited to appear on Atlanta Community Profiles by Louis A. Wieland, Jr., president of Community Profiles, the official relocation magazines for FMLS that are distributed by realtors and many Chambers of Commerce throughout the metro area. Hynes’ interview will be focused on discussing Clayton State University in general.

Clayton State Library Holding Used Book Sale, Apr. 15
The Clayton State University Library will be holding a used book sale from Monday, Apr. 15 through Thursday, Apr. 18.
The book sale, which is open to the public as well as Clayton State students, faculty and staff, will be held on Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center, across from Jazzman’s Cafe. Hardback books are $5 each or five for $20. Paperbacks are $2.50 each or three for $5.
Everything from coffee table books to steamy romances will be available. Browse among histories and mysteries; science and biographies. Discounts will be added later in the week, but shop early for the best selection.
All proceeds will go to support Clayton State library services and resources.
Annual Service Awards, Apr. 23
Clayton State University will gather on Tuesday, Apr. 23 in Spivey Hall to honor faculty and staff with the annual Service Awards ceremony. This year will also celebrate the 19th annual announcement of the Alice J. Smith award winners. The event will begin at 2 p.m., followed with a light reception.
It’s also time to nominate staff members for the Alice Smith Staff Award. Eligible nominees are full-time, benefited staff members with at least one year of credible service to the University, who do not have faculty status.

Faculty/Staff Awards Ceremony, Apr. 23
The Clayton State University Faculty-Staff 2013 Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Apr. 23, in Spivey Hall at 2 p.m. Please place this on your calendar and let your departments know about the event.
Specifically, Human Resources needs to know of anyone in your area that is planning on retiring this year. We want to be able to recognize them during the program and present them with their retirement award. Your assistance with gathering this information will be greatly appreciated.

Lunch and Learn… Technology in the Classroom, Apr. 24
The Department of Teacher Education would like to help educate you on the use of technology in the classroom.
Dr. Steve Smith is offering some sessions to Education faculty, but Dr. Ruth Caillouet thought that others of the faculty and staff might also be interested. These will be hands-on sessions meant to help the novice as well as the more experienced folks share ideas.
So, bring your lunch and come learn with us. All of the sessions will be held in the Teacher Education Resource Room during the activity period. Feel free to drop in for five minutes or stay as long as you like.
