Transitions in the College of Health
Dr. Betty Lane has been named Chair of the School of Nursing after having served as Interim Chair. She has done an amazing job leading the School through a very successful re-accreditation of the undergraduate and graduates programs.
Dr. Gail Barnes has decided to return to faculty effective June 30 and Lois Manning Burke will serve as Interim Department Chair of Dental Hygiene effective July 1. Burke served as Department Chair of Dental Hygiene at Clayton State previously from 1993 to 2003.
Free HIV Testing
In collaboration with the Clayton County Board of Health, free HIV testing is available in UHS on June 16 and June 30, from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Anyone is eligible to receive this free testing with results available in minutes. Counseling and treatment arrangements for anyone with positive results will be arranged by the Clayton County Board of Health.
This is a walk-in, anonymous opportunity in Health Services which is located in Clayton Station Apartments, Building 1000. Please take advantage of this free testing opportunity. Free HIV testing will also be offered every Monday during fall semester.
Active Shooter Training Presentations
Clayton State University Director of Public Safety Bobby Hamil will be providing two active shooter training presentations over the summer that are open for all the campus to attend.
The first will be on Wednesday, June 18 at 2 p.m. in room B12 of the Lecture Hall and the next one will be on Tuesday, July 15 at 10 a.m. in the same location.
Each presentation will include a 15 minute video followed by a PowerPoint and Q&As. Total presentation should take about an hour and a half.
No reservations are needed and these presentations are open for students, faculty and staff to attend.
Clayton State Continuing Education Graduation, June 19
The Division of Continuing Education at Clayton State University will have its spring graduation on Thursday, June 19, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The graduation ceremony, with an expected attendance of 300, will be held in Clayton State University’s world-famous Spivey Hall. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held next door in the Harry S. Downs Center.
Individuals from a wide variety of certificate programs will be graduating. These include programs in as diverse a group of disciplines as; health care, information technology, teaching, commercial, P.I., project management, HR and entertainment fields.
Summer Fitness & Wellness Programming
The Department of Recreation & Wellness is excited to announce its summer Fitness & Wellness programs:
Group X (Group Exercise)
Group X offers approximately 25 land-based group exercise classes each semester. Classes are free to all Clayton State University Fitness Center members and are located in our two Group X studios at the west end of the Fitness Center. Summer classes began on Monday, June 2 and will end on Friday, August 1. Personal Training provides an individualized fitness experience to the Clayton State University community. All personal trainers are current Clayton State University students who have obtained a nationally personal training certification. The goal of the Personal Training Program is to assist students and fitness center members in achieving physical fitness benefits effectively. A Personal Trainer will work with you to:
- Set clear and realistic physical fitness goals using the guidelines set by the American College of Sports Medicine.
- Determine how fitness goals will be achieved and the amount of work needed to reach your goals.
Personal Trainers also recommend and instruct proper exercise techniques while teaching safe and effective use of fitness equipment. Both individual and buddy sessions (2 people) are available depending on your needs and packages range from one to 30 session options. Workouts to go are also available. Each package includes an initial consultation (1 hour in length) prior to the first personal training session. No refunds will be issued after initial purchase. Healthy Heroes Faculty/Staff Challenge Sponsored by Recreation & Wellness
The Department of Recreation and Wellness proudly announces the faculty and staff Healthy Heroes Challenge. This program was designed to help encourage healthier behaviors and habits among Clayton State University faculty and staff and to help build and maintain a happier, healthier workplace. The primary goal of the challenge is to incorporate all dimensions of wellness to, ultimately, build a better you! The program will begin June 23 and last until Aug. 1 and will consist of daily physical activity, social media participation, and weekly challenges.
The challenge will be a two-person team challenge. Teams will compete and accumulate points doing various activities, some just requiring you to use Social Media (Facebook/Twitter)! Points will be awarded on the daily basis for various activities that will be fun and engaging. This will be a fun and interactive way to keep up with your health all while making little improvements along the way. The event will conclude with an Olympic theme game hour where heroes will be born!

Lee Moore is Hitchhiking the Silk Road
When last we checked in with Lee Moore, the son of one Clayton State University’s more noted alumni; former faculty member and dean Dr. Benita H. Moore, he had won an Adventure Grant to hitchhike the fabled Silk Road from Outside
That was last summer. Now Moore, an Athens, Ga., filmmaker who also does consulting related to China, is indeed following in the footsteps of Marco Polo, et al.
For the trip Moore, who speaks Mandarin among his other skills, has already set up a blog, http://www.silkroadhitchhikers.com/
. He’s currently in Xian, and will be hiking to Huashan within the next few days.
Moore and his travelling companion, photographer Galen Burke, will be exploring what the outdoors mean to the Chinese. As Moore explained in his application for the grant, “we will explore how China’s break-neck growth is affecting the country’s natural spaces and the way the Chinese think of those spaces. We want to understand what the outdoors means to the Chinese. Our route will take us through the Taklamakan Desert and the Tian Shan Mountains, where the Han Chinese live with a mélange of ethnic minority like the Uighurs, Kazaks, and Mongolians. We chose hitchhiking as our method of travel because it will put us into contact with large numbers of everyday Chinese people, giving us the opportunity to interview them about what they think of their outdoors.”
Loch Visits Scotland
You’ve followed President Hynes and Dean Eichelberger from South Korea. And you certainly “went” to Sochi, Russia with Clayton State alumnus Kevin Liles to take in the Winter Olympics. Now you can follow Loch’s adventures as he (she? it?) returns to visit the ancestral home of all Lochs… Scotland.

Solicitation & Fundraising Event Approval Procedures
Effective June 16, 2014, all new solicitation and fundraising events will require approval as outlined in Clayton State’s solicitation policy. Most recurring event organizers have already received letters granting approval to conduct their events for the next three years.

As we near the end of the fiscal year, we wanted to provide you with some very important dates. Listed below are the cutoff dates for processing Check Requests, PO vouchers, and Travel and Expense payments.
If a Travel or Expense report has already been submitted as of June 3, 2014, Accounts Payable will process those submissions. For Fiscal Year 2015, Accounts Payables will begin processing Check Requests, PO vouchers, and Travel and Expense reports on July 8, 2014.

The Summer World Music Festival is presented as part of Spivey Hall’s Young People’s Concerts, providing individuals of all ages access to outstanding live performances. Artists featured during the Summer World Music Festival will provide study guides in advance of their performance that meet Georgia Performance Standards for curriculum connections in world history, geography, and music.
The Spivey Hall Summer World Music Festival is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. GCA also receives support from its partner agency, the National Endowment for the Arts.

Bursar’s Office Year-End Cutoff, June 26
The 2014 fiscal year-end is fast approaching we are required by the Georgia Board of Regents to freeze the Banner System tables on June 30, 2014. All departmental deposits are due to the Bursar’s office by 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2014.
Any deposits received after June 26, 2014 will post to fiscal year 2015.

Chancellor's Service Excellence Awards, Nominations Due by July 1
The University System of Georgia’s Chancellor's Service Excellence Awards are back this year with a few program changes.
Previously the Chancellor’s Customer Service Awards, they are now the Service Excellence Awards because this title captures the broader definition that is intended by the program. Basically, Service Excellence is what we do every day by facilitating excellence in teaching and contributing to a nurturing learning environment.
Also, the university representatives are now called Service Excellence Ambassadors instead of Customer Service Champions. The program is also broader in scope, as shown by the following eight award categories:

Service Excellence Award – Outstanding Leader (Administrator level)

On Campus Information Session for Digital Film Technician I and II, July 12

Clayton State University Division of Continuing Education is gearing up for its second round of information sessions and classes for Digital Film Technician Training I and II.
The highly-successful first set of Film Tech I courses, taught by long-time digital film industry expert Barton Bond, have been playing to full houses of 40+ students each since February. The next on-campus information session will be held on Saturday, July 12, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., in the Downs Center.
Save the Date, New Student Convocation, Aug. 15
Faculty and staff are invited to participate in the Ninth Annual New Student Convocation at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 in Spivey Hall.
The New Student Convocation is an exciting time when faculty, staff and all new students assemble to mark the beginning of a new academic year. New Student Convocation is a formal ceremony intended to inspire, motivate and officially welcome our new students. President Dr. Thomas J. Hynes, Jr., will offer encouraging words to incoming students and the campus community during the ceremony.

Announcement on VP of Information Technology and Services
Dr. John Bryan is beginning a new phase of his long service to Clayton State University. Beginning this month, Dr. Bryan will step down as Vice President of Information Technology and Services, and assume responsibilities as part of the faculty in the College of Health. In that new role, he will bring his considerable technology experience to the classroom, and return to his roots in health-related technology issues.
Dr. Bryan has 23 years of experience as a CIO in public higher education in Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Virginia. His technology accomplishments include the installation of a new VOIP system at Clayton State University, four state-of-the-art fiber, copper, and wireless campus networks, and an on-time, on-budget PeopleSoft ERP implementation. He has served as the Chief Information Officer of the University since 2004.
President Thomas Hynes notes, “Even as the University explores new directions in the use of technology to enhance and support the learning of our students, faculty and staff, we are grateful for the technology accomplishments achieved during Dr. Bryan’s service. Clayton State University is Georgia’s first public notebook university. All students at Clayton State are required to have on-demand access to a laptop computer. OITS operates the HUB, a widely recognized Help Desk operation, in the University Center for Clayton State’s 6,500 student and faculty notebook computers.”
Beginning June 16, Dr. Bill Gruszka will serve as Visiting CIO. Dr. Gruszka currently serves as Director, IT Production Services at Georgia State University, and has previously served as Chief Information Officer at Southern Polytechnic State University. Dr. Gruszka will help Clayton State maintain its institutional leadership in Information Technology as the University begins the process of seeking a permanent successor for Dr. Bryan.
Summer Sports Camp Discount for Faculty/Staff
The Department of Athletics’ summer sports camps are in full swing until Aug. 1. Faculty and staff who would like to enroll their child(ren) in any of the offerings this summer can receive a 10 percent discount. Both half-day and full-day sessions are available. Next week’s classes include girl’s basketball, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls tennis. The week of June 16 will feature soccer, tennis, boys basketball and the ever-popular boys and girls speed camp (with that old speed demon, Mike Mead.)
Clark Howard’s “Life After Graduation” Special Featured on WSB-TV Website
WSB consumer advocate Clark Howard’s Family 2 Family Special, “Life After Graduation,” filmed in a large part at Clayton State, is now available for viewing on the WSB-TV website.

As part of the program, WSB also talked to Georgia-based companies and businesses from around the country about what they look for in potential hires.
Introducing the NES Peer Support Initiative
Several months ago, Network and Enterprise Services began a project known as the Peer Support Initiative (PSI for short). The goal of this project is to provide an open, community based support infrastructure that allows CSU faculty, staff, and students to ask questions, share ideas, and provide solutions to technical matters involving other Clayton State members and services.

In fact, if you post a question on the PSI discussion board, your question may never be answered. However, the bigger the community gets, the more likely it is that someone will be able to answer your question.

Campus Information & Visitor Services
The Office of Campus Information & Visitor Services in the Division of Student Affairs will be reaching out to members of the campus community to clarify the needs of the campus in relation to the office’s mission which is in part, to facilitate meaningful access to the institution by providing timely and accurate information and appropriate referrals for all internal and external constituents.
Betty Momayezi serves as the director of the new office and will work with the University to provide centralized and comprehensive information for the campus and the community.

New Dream Catchers Program!
The legend of the dream catcher embodies the idea that only good dreams are filtered through the netting allowing the good to pass through the feathers to the people. Clayton State is an entire community that rallies around the individual dreams and aspirations of its people. Clayton State’s key attributes are creating an empowering experience, offering a supportive community, as well as offering inclusive diversity and an engaged, experiential preparation.
The “Dream Catchers” program allows faculty and staff to nominate a fellow colleague, themselves or even a department that really embodies one or all of the attributes.
