This Week Former Laker Golfer Nelson to Compete in ‘”Tough Mudder” Event to Raise Money for Zac Bradley Fund, Apr. 6 Clayton State University golfer Clark Nelson finished up his collegiate career last fall, and now as he works to complete his degree, the native of Scotland has picked up a new sport that is about as opposite as golf as possible. Instead of strolling down a well-manicured and peaceful golf course on a spring afternoon, Nelson will compete in a new type of running event, called a “Tough Mudder.” Designed by British Special Forces to test your all-around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie, Tough Mudder events are described as hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses. Nelson will compete in a Tough Mudder event on Saturday, Apr. 6 in Augusta, Ga. Another element of Tough Mudder events is that participants often compete in them to raise money for charitable organizations. As a fellow Laker student-athlete with Zac Bradley, Nelson has decided that the proceeds from him competing in the race will be donated to help the Zac Bradley Fund. Bradley continues to bare expenses that insurance does not cover. Sexual Assault Awareness Month The Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center (SCSAC), the Clayton State University Office of Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Clayton State University chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will host the Annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month during April 2013. Events for the month include the Clothes Line Project, the Clothes Line Project T-Shirt Drive, Bringing in the Bystander: Bystander Intervention Training, and Take Back the Night. The Clothesline Project will run from Apr. 8 to Apr. 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center. The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to the violence against women, men, and children. Clayton State students, faculty and staff will decorate shirts to represent victim’s experience to share the experiences of one in three females and one in seven males. To effectively make The Clothesline Project a success Psi Chi is asking everyone to dig through their linens and donate lightly-used, plain-colored T-Shirts for the Clothesline Project. Phone and Voicemail Upgrades Apr. 11 On April 11, 2013 at 9pm, Network and Enterprise Services (OITS) will be upgrading the University Avaya VoIP system and Voice mail to the newest versions. In performing the upgrade of the voicemail system, a backup will be performed on April 10th, any voicemails received on April 11th will not be restored to the new system. School of Nursing to Host Annual Cultural Diversity Conference, Apr. 11 The School of Nursing at Clayton State University, via its federal Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant, is preparing to host its Annual Cultural Diversity Conference. The purpose of the Cultural Diversity Conference is to increase the cultural competence of faculty and students at the School of Nursing. The conference will be held on Thursday, Apr. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon in Student Activities Center Ballrooms, A, B and C. Although the conference is directed to Clayton State faculty and students, the public is invited to attend on a space-available basis. Sullivan will be speaking on “Eliminating Health Disparities in the United States” and will be reviewing health of the U.S. population, including disparities in health status and in access to health care, describing the strategies which are effective in decreasing disparities in health status, noting economic impact of health disparities, and articulating the role of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity in meeting health care challenges in America. Also speaking will be Rick Zoucha, Ph.D., RN, associate professor at the Duquesne University School of Nursing. Zoucha will be speaking on “Understanding the concepts of cultural confianza in Mexican Americans: Listening to the Voice of La Raza.” Clayton State University/Southern Crescent Symphony Concert, Apr. 12 The Southern Crescent Symphony and the Clayton State University Orchestra will present their final concert of the season on Friday, Apr. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall. Clayton State faculty members Betul Soykan and Nan Kemberling will join the orchestra for the Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra by Frederick Delius. Also on the program will be works by Elgar, Saint-Saens and Vaughn-Williams. The Southern Crescent Youth Orchestra, conducted by Kathy Saucier, will also be featured. Violinist Betul Soykan received her training at the Izmir Conservatory in Turkey and the Conservatoire Bern in Switzerland. As the winner of the Conservatoire’s concerto competition, she performed the Barber Violin Concerto with the Bern Symphony. She is the founder of the Atlanta Strings Conservatory and violin instructor at Clayton State University. Cellist Nan Kemberling studied extensively with well-known cellist and pedagogue, Martha Gerschefski and did further study at the San Francisco Conservatory. She is the principal cellist with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra and is on the faculty of the Georgia Academy of Music and Clayton State University. She is a regular performer as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the Atlanta area. Clayton State Biology Department Eminent Speakers Series, Apr. 12 Presentations for the Clayton State University’s Biology Department’s Eminent Speaker Series are scheduled for Friday, Apr. 12, and Friday, Apr. 19, in each case in room 107 of the Laboratory Annex Building (The L.A.B.) on the Clayton State campus. Apr. 12 Clayton State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has announced a new series of classes, PlanSmart, to be held at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce. PlanSmart will consist of three classes, held on Mar. 15, Apr. 12 and May 17. The cost is $69 per class, or $150 for the entire series. Wieland, Jr., president of Community Profiles, the official relocation magazines for FMLS that are distributed by realtors and many Chambers of Commerce throughout the metro area. Dr. Karen Weaver Dr. Karen Weaver, associate professor of Nursing in the Clayton State University College of Health, died at her home on Sunday evening, Mar. 31, at 10:30 p.m., after a year-and-a-half long battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded and supported by her loving and devoted family. There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony held at the Clayton State University School of Nursing in the near future. Details on the celebration will follow. Her remains will be donated to medical research, therefore the Celebration at the School of Nursing will be the only official service for her. It will occur before the semester ends. Women’s Forum Luncheon to Feature Special Guest Speaker Ashley Vicos, Apr. 16 The Clayton State Women’s Forum luncheon on Tuesday, Apr. 16 will feature a special guest speaker, Clayton State alumnus and Food Network star Ashley Vicos. The luncheon will run from noon to 1:30 p.m., in room 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center. Vicos is a resident of Henry County who has been professionally decorating cakes for 14 years.
