Clayton State University has hosted more than a few unusual events over the years. Neal Boortz and Cynthia Tucker squared off in a debate back in the late 90s. There have been a couple of First Lego League Super Regionals. “Hamlet, the Musical.” And who could forget “NASCAR 101,” a special one-day Continuing Education (CE) course on, that’s right, NASCAR. Plus, CE has also hosted several dinner theatre murder mysteries. However, Clayton State has never hosted a “Goo-Con.”
Now, that’s partly because there never has been a “Goo-Con” prior to this coming weekend. However, how many opportunities does the public have to be able to learn how to create a proper costume for DragonCon, or to find out how to apply realistic special-effects make-up? Talk about dreams made real…
Both of those unique skills, along with The Engineer Guy, a couple of professional zombies, and two stars of “FaceOff” will be featured in the Clayton State Student Activities Center on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday July 14… it’s the first “Goo-Con.”
Running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, The Engineer Guy, a locally-owned ClaytonCounty small business, will host the first annual “Goo-Con” at ClaytonState’s StudentActivitiesCenter. The two-day goo convention will feature workshops and panel discussions about special effects make-up, mold making, casting, and costuming. Attendees will learn about proper costume making for DragonCon and other science fiction/fantasy events. The Clayton State Division of Continuing Education and the Clayton State SBDC office will be assisting with this event.
The Engineer Guy, celebrating 10 years in business, planned this event to bring together people who love the movie industry, especially special effects and makeup.
“It is my desire for this to become an annual event that pulls together the supply side of the movie industry and helps those involved make connections,” says Nelson Burke, owner of The Engineer Guy.
Goo-Con has secured as featured guests R.J. Haddy and Roy Wooley of SyFy’s hit show FaceOff, as well as “professional zombies” Erin Bushko and Larry Mainland to lead panel discussions.
Live demonstrations will include:
- Prosthetic Application
- Mold Making
- Body Painting
- Full Head Casting
- Casting Props
- Airbrushing Techniques
Weekend passes are $15 each and can be purchased at www.goo-con.com
