Term to Study Abroad: Spring-Break 2020. This is the spring break period during the Spring semester. This period will not interfere with the Spring course schedule.

Program Type: This is a faculty-led program with a Clayton State faculty member.
Program Fee: $2,800.00
Courses Offered: HIST 4800 / 6950 Italy's Long Globalization: Politics, Economy, Art, and Culture from Ancient Rome to Today (inquire with the Program Director or your advisor about possible cross listings or the use of the course as an elective).
Credit Hours: 3 credit hours per course
Program Description: Our ten-day stay in Italy will form the cornerstone of our spring semester course on Italy's Long Globalization (HIST 4800). By visiting sites such as the Coliseum, Forum, Pantheon, and Vatican in Rome, students will see and experience first-hand the near-global character and impact of the Roman Empire. While in Lucca, Florence, and Venice, students will learn about Italy's central role in the Renaissance: the artistic and scientific reawakening of the Western World and the areas that influenced. We will visit museums, cathedrals, and historical buildings, seeing and experiencing masterpieces by Michelangelo, Botticelli, Titian, and countless others. During the trip, students will also get to experience contemporary Italy, at the cultural heart of Unifying Europe. Students will get to experience Italy's diversity and see how it has influenced the world, from cuisine to culture, fashion to food.
What is included: Flights, hotels with continental breakfasts, all transportation while in Italy (taxis, subways, trains, water buses and -taxis), services of professional tour guides, tickets to all museums and historical sites, several excellent group meals. Student program fees also include faculty travel costs. Emergency medical insurance with CISI. Tuition is separate from the study abroad costs and other associated fees. What is NOT included: Most of the students lunches and dinners. The students own spending money for souvenirs and incidentals. Clayton State tuition, Passport/Visa fees*, and some/most meals on travel days, Healthcare Clearance Form physician and medical fees*, travel insurance (learn more about Travel Insurance).
Estimated Costs: Note that your program fees and tuition are separate costs. Program fees are the fees that pay for what is included in the program costs. Prepare for spending money and for additional meals. Speak to your Program Director for more details.
- Once students have made their second program payment, the Program Director will begin enrolling students in the study abroad course.
- This study abroad program will provide students with one academic course that offers 3 credit hours towards a students graduation requirements.
- Students must be registered as part of the academic course in order to attend the program.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Non-Credit Seeking Students, Alumni, Spouses, and Children are restricted from attending a study abroad program at Clayton State University, which is in accordance to the University System of Georgia (USG) regulations. Only credit seeking Clayton State students are eligible to attend a study abroad program.

Required Application Documents
Sign-in with your CSU username and password credentials to access the Study Abroad Application Portal to complete your study abroad process. Visit the links below to obtain and/or submit the required documentation.
Approved Application Retrieval Steps
To locate your approved Application Contract, see your Clayton State email. You will receive an email notification from the Clayton State University Service Portal. This email will provide a confirmation with your approved application. Example: The email will be titled Update on History in Italy Application Contract: Approved as the subject line. The email will inform you of the necessary procedures to follow to complete your application and payment process.
- The Bursar will require your Approved Application Contract and the Approval Email.
- Click the link in the approval email to access the Approved Application Contract.
Print this page. In addition, print the Approved Application Contract email and bring
it with your Approved Application Contract to the Bursar.
- Login to the Study Abroad Application Portal by using your CSU username and password.
- Print the approved documents. You will need to right-click and print the page.
- Take the approved Application Contract and approval email to the Bursar and make your first payment in person. If you do not have the payment and the two forms, The Bursar Office will not be able to accept your program payment.

Required Documentation and Orientation Deadlines

Pre-Departure Orientations (PDO)
Orientation is an integral part of preparing students to study abroad overseas with Clayton State University. Failure to attend the study abroad orientations is an automatic dismissal from the program. Students MUST ATTEND both orientations (there are TWO) to participate in the study abroad program. The PDO is held with the Study Abroad Office, while the second orientation will be held with the study abroad Program Director. Each orientation is conducted separately and at different intervals, covering separate topics spanning multiple topics to be aware of while abroad.
The Pre-Departure Orientation with the Study Abroad Office is only for students who have completed the following:
- Your Program Director has approved your Application Contract.
- You made your first payment to the Bursar Office.
- Only for students attending a Spring Break program.
Register for the PDO
Hosted by the Study Abroad Office on Friday, November 15, 2019, from 6:30 to 9:00 PM.
Location: In the Lecture Hall Building, Room B13, at the Main Campus.
At this meeting, have the chance to connect with your fellow study abroad peers traveling on this program. In addition, this event will be providing food, games, and prizes.
Register for the Study Abroad Orientation by or before Thursday, November 7, 2019.
ORIENTATION NOTE: The PDO is a hybrid orientation and some elements will be featured in the D2L for your particular program. Certain sections of the online orientation must be completed before attending this live event. After making your first payment, students will be notified of their enrollment in the D2L online orientation and will need to complete the Before Departure Online Orientation. This will assist students with the information covered at the live orientation on Friday, November 15. This orientation focuses on an encompassing view of study abroad discussing safety measures, security, behavior, academics, financial aid, and other aspects geared around the before, during, and after a program. In addition, students will be provided program resources and guides to assist in preparation to travel abroad.
Room Location: The Lecture Hall is building #16 on the Campus Map. This building is in the center of the campus quad and is referred to as the 'Pizza Hut Building' due to the shape of its roof likened to the pizza company.
Parking Recommendations: Students should park in Parking Lot D, F, or G as shown on the campus map for easy access to the Lecture Hall Building.
Program Director Orientation To Be Announced
- To learn more about the Program Director's Orientation please contact Dr. Marko Maunula. The Program Director Orientation is conducted about two months prior to the programs departure date.
- This orientation focuses on specific features of the program such as the course syllabus, program assignments and grading, program itinerary, lodging, roommate assignments, what to pack for your program and more.
Payments and Withdrawing
Study Abroad Payments
- Payments need to be made to the Bursar Office.
- Students will take their Approved Application Contract to the Bursar Office. The Approved Application Contract is sent to the student's Clayton State email, after the Program Director has approved the students application.
- Students will print and take the email to the Bursar Office to proceed with reserving a spot on the program by making the first payment. This first step must be completed in person at the Bursar.
- In order to reserve a spot on the program, begin making the necessary payments. Students must make their program payments in full and have paid for tuition in order to remain in the study abroad program.
- Once students have made their second program payment, the Program Director will enroll the student in the study abroad course.
Spring Break Payment Policy
Total Cost of Italy Program: $2,800.00
- First Payment and Deposit: Tuesday, November 5, 2019, of $1,244.00.
- *Reserve your spot on the program by making your first payment.
- Second Payment: Wednesday, December 11, 2019, of $1,244.00.
- *After your second payment is completed, the student will be enrolled in the academic course by the Program Director.
- Final Payment: Thursday, January 16, 2020, of $312.00.
- *Pay close attention to the Add/Drop period for the Spring Semester and the programs withdrawal deadlines. Tuition payments will be due in December. See the Academic Calendar.
Tuition payments are not included with the study abroad program fees and are separate associated fees. The study abroad program fees pay for the program expenses such as airfare, lodging, tours and so forth while abroad. Tuition pays for the academic course. Currently, the online payment option is only available after the student has made the first payment in person to the Bursar Office. The Study Abroad Office is unable to offer direct online payments for study abroad programs at this time. Our team is working to provide this feature for future programming.
Once the first payment has been paid to the Bursar Office, students can continue paying the remaining balance through the DUCK. Students may access the online payment steps for the DUCK by logging in to the Study Abroad Application Portal.
Spring Break Refund Policy
- Withdrawal on or before Wednesday, December 11, 2019: Complete refund excluding the non-refundable deposit of $250.00 and any expenses paid towards the program fees.
- Withdrawal on or after Thursday, December 12, 2019: Costs for airfare, rail, admissions, and hotel(s) (including any cancellation penalties or charges imposed by the airline, hotel, or other prepaid expenses) and all administrative fees incurred are forfeited: the remainder will be refunded, excluding the non-refundable deposit of $250.00.
- Withdrawal on or after Thursday, January 16, 2020: All costs are forfeited; no refunds.
Add/Drop/Withdrawal Periods from the Course: If you are considering dropping the academic course and withdrawing from the study abroad program, refer to the Academic Calendar for the current semester to review the add/drop dates, withdrawal dates etc. Make sure these dates do not interfere with your withdrawal process from the study abroad program. If you have questions or concerns, speak with your Academic Advisor and Program Director. Access the Academic Calendar.
Health Clearance Form: STUDENTS MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE REQUIRED HEALTH CLEARANCE FORM HAS BEEN APPROVED AND CLEARED. IF YOUR HEALTH CLEARANCE HAS BEEN DENIED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE WITHDRAWAL DATES. Students must complete the Health Clearance Form before Wednesday, December 11, 2019, in order to receive a refund, excluding the non-refundable deposit of $250.00 and any expenses paid toward the program fees.
Study Abroad Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older to attend a study abroad program.
- Must be in Good-Academic Standing with a recommended GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Study abroad is a mandatory requirement for MBA students focusing on the International Business concentration. Study abroad is required for students in this concentration in order to meet their graduation requirements. Failure to attend the program will jeopardize the student’s graduation deadline.
- Be aware that some Financial Aid requires that a Study Abroad Program Must Fill the Students’ Academic Course Requirements or Course Electives. Please speak with a Financial Aid advisor before applying for the study abroad program.
- Currently have or in the process of obtaining a Passport for international travel.
- If you are in your senior or final year as a student, students will have limited options or none at all in regards to study abroad opportunities.
- Health Clearance Forms must be completed before the second program payment if the student needs to withdraw from the study abroad program. See the Health Clearance Form for more details.
- Note: Tuition is separate from the study abroad program fees.
- Meet with your Academic Advisor: Discuss your interest in the study abroad program and request information about your required course credits to complete your degree at Clayton State. Locate which desired study abroad program could fulfill your academic course requirements.
International Student Requirements
- International students who hold F-1 visas must contact the Study Abroad Office and International Student Services to discuss if the international student requires a visa prior to departing the United States.
- Some countries may not require a travel visa, however, if they do, please note the
- There are certain documents the Study Abroad Office and the Program Director must provide to students to submit to the embassy or consulate to obtain the travel visa.
- International students must begin this step immediately as the process can be time consuming when working with a foreign embassy or consulate to obtain the necessary travel visa. It is imperative to begin this process immediately to determine whether the visa can be obtained before departure.
- If the travel visa cannot be obtained before departure then this may disrupt the student’s attendance on the study abroad program.
- It is the student’s responsibility to work with the foreign embassy or consulate to obtain the travel visa before the programs departure date.
- International students will need to meet with the Director of International Programs, Ryan Packard to inform him of your study abroad travel plans. He will assist with updating the immigration and visa documentation for your exit and entry into the U.S.
- International students must have their I-20s signed by Ryan Packard, the Director of International Programs before departing the country on a study abroad program. Failure to do so may cause exit and re-entry issues for students traveling to and from the United States.
- The Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) does not pay for study abroad programs. If you have questions or concerns about this process, refer to the SACM contract or speak with your SACM advisor.

Submitting a Visa Copy
International and non-permanent resident students must submit a copy of their travel visa (if applicable for travel) to the Study Abroad Office once the document has been applied to the student’s passport. To learn more and submit the document, login and visit the Study Abroad Application Portal.
- If you have a U.S. Permanent Resident Card, please take this document with you on the study abroad program. In addition, please make sure that this document does not expire while you are abroad.
- To avoid any concerns returning to the U.S., please make sure you have all of the necessary re-entry papers.
- If you have any questions about traveling in relation to the study abroad program, please speak to the Study Abroad Office or Ryan Packard, the Director of International Programs for additional assistance.
- In addition, please see the section above in the International Student Requirements pertaining to the travel visa as this may also pertain to your attendance on the program.

Italy Entry & Exit Requirements
- U.S. citizens must have a valid passport to enter Italy. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date. As this requirement is subject to change at any time without notice, we recommend at least 6 to 9 months' validity.
- A visa is not required for visits up to 90 days.
- Non-EU visitors must obtain a stamp in their passport upon initial entry into a Schengen country.
- If you are not traveling with a U.S. passport, please check with the Italian Embassy for the requirements based on your nationality.
- The Centers for Disease Control recommends that all travelers be up to date on routine vaccinations such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine, varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, and your yearly flu shot before every trip. These are only recommendations.
- There are no vaccinations required for entry into Italy. There was a recent outbreak of measles so please consult your physician about measles vaccinations.
- Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the U.S.
- Please consult your physician for additional information and recommendations based on your individual circumstances.
- All students attending a study abroad program with Clayton State University must complete the Health Clearance Form and be cleared to travel. See the form for more details.
- Students should take their time while filling out the Health Clearance Form.
- Students are strongly encouraged to self-report & disclose current information, medications, or any conditions that might require assistance or resources abroad. The more the Program Director and Study Abroad Office are aware of, the more we can prepare and be informed to assist students while traveling overseas. In addition, consulting your primary care physician or the UHS can assist with any medical recommendations or health concerns you may have.
- Example: If you require an Epi-Pen for a food allergy, this information is important for the Program Director to note in case they need to avoid the substances in your food throughout the program, especially for any preplanned meals. This would be something that you would want to mention on your Health Clearance Form.
Meet with the UHS
To complete the Health Clearance Form, meet with your primary care physician or with the University Health Services (UHS) on campus. Make an appointment with the UHS and don't forget to take your Health Clearance document with you!
Upon Return from Abroad
Returning students will be sent a program evaluation. This evaluation allows the Study Abroad Office to note important factors of the program and student experiences as well as monitor any improvements that can be made as our programs move forward.
