Dr. Furlong received her B.S. in Biology from Georgia State University in 1994 and her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Georgia in 2000. She joined Clayton State University in 2000 as an Assistant Professor of Biology. She is currently a Full Professor of Biology and is the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Between 2007 and 2016 she was the Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences and between 2016 and 2019 she was the Chair of the Department of Biology. She teaches Introductory Microbiology, Microbiology for Health Sciences, Biology, Biocomputing, Microbial Ecology, and Applied and Environmental Microbiology. She mentors undergraduate research projects related to microbial ecology and environmental microbiology. While her administrative duties keep her very busy, she sincerely enjoys teaching undergraduate students in the classroom, laboratory and in the field. Dr. Furlong advises Biology majors and post baccalaureate students. Her area of advising specialty is Pre Veterinary Medicine.
