Pictures in the above banner, from left to right: (1) Ruth Barcan Marcus (1921-2012) was an American logician of great note, making philosophical and technical advances in modal logic. (2) Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher, whose ethical theory we will be studying in Ethics. (3) Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1968) was a French existentialist philosopher. (4) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., (1928-1968) was a social activist and minister. His "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" is a very interesting counter-point to Plato's "Crito," studied in Ethics, and the ethics unit of Introduction to Philosophy.
