Clayton State University: Tell us about your academic journey at Clayton State.

Paul Powell: My academic journey at Clayton State was enriching, challenging, and enlightening. After serving 23 years in the U.S. Army, I retired and wanted to start a new career. I came to CSU to earn a Georgia Film Academy certification and learn how to make films. I quickly realized I did not completely understand and appreciate all the nuances in transforming an idea into a film. Every class taught me something new and provided a solid foundation for understanding the filmmaking process.

Now, I have a clearer understanding and respect for what it takes to make a film. The professors are incredible. They challenged, engaged, and encouraged me by answering my questions, providing resources, assigning challenging projects, facilitating engaging discussions, and providing meaningful feedback.

I spent many late nights, early mornings, and weekends completing projects and meeting deadlines, but it was worth it. I believe that CSU's rigorous academic and hands-on experiences will help me achieve my career goals.

CSU: Did you face any challenges in trying to complete your degree?

PP: Yes, my biggest challenge was time management. Every semester, I took a challenging course load, so I had to develop a plan to complete all coursework and maintain a good home and school balance. As I started taking more film-specific courses, time management became more crucial. I used multiple whiteboards and calendars to keep track of everything, which was very helpful. Staying organized will make your classes less stressful and more predictable.

CSU: What do you hope to do after graduation?

PP: I hope to apply the knowledge learned in the film production program to improve my multimedia company, continue working with students in various film programs, and impact local communities.

CSU: What advice would you give other Clayton State Students who are working toward accomplishing their dream of obtaining their degree?

PP: Obtaining the degree you are pursuing is possible. Please keep in mind that getting a degree is only one of many steps in your career. The tips below helped me stay on track for graduation and establish future professional relationships in the process:

  • Keep a positive attitude. Your attitude is the one thing you can control in most situations and will determine if you succeed or fail.
  • Take each class seriously and do your best. There is a specific reason why each course is in the curriculum. Each course you take fits into the mosaic of your educational path.
  • Track your degree works carefully and plan a year out. Some lower-division and most upper-division level courses are available once a year, so timing your classes is crucial to completing your degree on time.
  • Study groups help you keep pace with coursework and help provide a sounding board for your thoughts and ideas in a supportive environment.
  • Volunteer to work on as many student projects as possible - it will reinforce the information you learn in class and provide you with opportunities to network. The student you help today will be the person that helps you get a job tomorrow.
