Joshua Kitchens was appointed director of the program in 2015. Josh comes to us from Georgia College & State University where he serves as University Archivist and Associate Professor, Special Collections of the Russell Library. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Georgia College, Master of Arts in Applied History from George Mason University and holds certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
Last December he received a Master of Archival Studies from Clayton State and we are proud that he is one of our own. He has taught as a part time faculty member in our MAS program and has taught courses in archives and research methods at Georgia College. During his time at Georgia College, Josh has been very much involved with the campus as a whole, serving on diverse campus committees including redesign of the core curriculum and co-chairing the academic program prioritization process. These experiences make him very well prepared to lead our continued Archival Studies program development, assess program effectiveness and provide leadership for continuous improvement, as well as contribute to the university as a whole. Josh is very enthusiastic about the potential for growth of the Archival Studies program.
Josh is a member of the editorial board of Provenance, the journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists and is member of several professional organizations. He also has an active record of service to the community and international education, having recently taught in Belize. In addition, he co-presented at the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) on how archives and an understanding of its purpose and function can be used to create activities for students that take them beyond the classroom and into their communities.
