Online/Seated Testing Comparison

Description: Have you ever stopped to think about your assessments in your online class? Have you considered the fact that students may or may not be who they say they are in the online classroom? Do you have apprehensions about students cheating in the online classroom? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then this workshop is for you. I have struggled with these same questions. I wanted to know how I could reassure myself that my online classroom provided the same assessment as my seated classroom. In this workshop, I will tell you what I found in my online class, and how I have come to accept the online assessment as a fair measure compared to a seated assessment.

Introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Description: Many of us spend time reflecting on what is happening in our classrooms. Sometimes we want to know if a new assignment is working, and sometimes we just want to better understand our students’ experiences. For example, questions you have asked might include: Are my students really learning or are they just memorizing for the test? What is happening to my students’ learning when they work in teams? Will this assignment help my students become more aware of the complexities of my discipline? Can reading circles encourage more students to participate in classroom discussions? Will they come away with a deeper understanding of the material? We often have a feeling of how things are working in the classroom, but when we systematically evaluate and reflect on those experiences, we begin to generate ideas that are not only informative to us, but can also be valuable to others. SoTL is the “systematic study of teaching and/or learning and the public sharing and review of such work through presentations, publications, or performances” (McKinney, 2007, p. 10). In this workshop, we will introduce participants to the SoTL process. Participants will leave with a foundational understanding of SoTL, and will begin formulating ideas for their own SoTL projects.

Preparing Your Tenure Application

Description: Join us for a 2-part workshop about the process of attaining tenure. Part I – CSU administrators who are most frequently involved in important tenure decisions will answer questions about and discuss the tenure process. Part II – Deepens the conversation about the process of putting together materials for tenure. Tenured faculty members from each college will share their approaches and suggestions and answer your burning questions. Please bring specific questions about your tenure portfolio (and your documents if you wish), as much of this intimate part of the session will be dedicated to answering specific questions and providing advice. While faculty moving from associate to full may benefit from attending, this session will be most useful for untenured faculty.
Objectives: learn more about attaining tenure at CSU. examine general and content-specific challenges to attaining tenure. have an opportunity to discuss and pose questions regarding the tenure process and their own tenure process.

Fall 2017 - Teaching Circles

Description: Each teaching circle will take on a specific text (provided free of cost to participants) as a starting point for a semester of intimate discussions on pedagogy and its connections to the production of knowledge, values, skills, identities, agency, and power. We will focus in particular on our current political and social context, and on the insights of critical pedagogy in and outside our classrooms. Fall17’s Circle will read Henry Giroux’s Neoliberalism’s War on Higher Education, a 2014 text examining how neoliberal policies, practices, and modes of material and symbolic violence have radically reshaped the mission and practice of higher education. Those participating in the Fall 17 Circle will be able to pick up their books from the CID in late August. If you have your own copy of the text, feel free to join in! Description: This session uses role play, case studies, and discussion to examine the following questions about teaching for diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. How is the current culture and climate of our classrooms helping — or hindering — the academic success of CSU students? Do microaggressions and/or implicit biases happen in our classrooms? Can we stop them? How can we manage “hot moments” in the classroom? Answers to these questions involve not only knowing as much as we can about our students, but also, turning the mirror to ourselves.
