A FRIEND'S HOUSE

All children need a home to provide a sense of security and unconditional love. Unfortunately, for many children, “home” is a place devoid of these necessities. A Friend’s House operates as a home for children in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services or the Juvenile Court System.

Residents stay for an unspecified length of time while a best course of action is determined based on a child’s assessment needs. Individuals or small groups can work directly with the children or assist the staff behind the scenes. Volunteers must be 21 years of age to work directly with children, required to complete an orientation class, and must pass a police background check.

ATLANTA ANGELS

Atlanta Angels is a foster care non-profit that was created to help empower children and build sustainable foster homes. We are a community of people that walk alongside foster children and their caretakers by offering consistent monthly support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship. There are dozens of kids and families in Clayton County on our waitlist, and we would love to tap into student support to help meet our community's needs!

Information about our volunteer opportunities are below:

  • Love Box: Volunteer groups are trained and matched with a specific foster family in their community for one full year. The Love Box group commits to offering encouragement through intangible support (think venting and babysitting) as well as tangible support (monthly care packages!). This is a great volunteer opportunity for groups to do together.
  • Dare to Dream: One volunteer is matched for a full year with one youth in foster care ages 11-22. This volunteer acts as a mentor to this youth and works to gain trust, set goals, and support their mentee in achieving their dreams. You must be at least 22 years old to volunteer in this program.
  • Angel Ally: This is our most popular program, and is for all of our one-off needs! These include helping out our events, hosting fundraisers, offering short-term support (e.g. tutoring), and more. If you have a special skill, we can work with you to figure out how to use it to help kids in care!

These volunteer opportunities are flexible and are great for students looking to better understand how trauma impacts community, and , most importantly, how every single person can make a difference.
For more information, please contact our volunteer coordinator Grace Stafford at grace@atlantaangels.org or 678-260-0071.

Our program is designed to match our volunteers to mentor one student from their local middle or high school. We are particularly interested in those of you who were a student in the Clayton County Public School system.

SOUTHWEST KEY PROGRAMS

Southwest Key Programs works with community partners to recruit a culturally diverse population of committed mentors. Mentors commit to serve as role models for their assigned mentee for a minimum of one year, providing support, encouragement and pro-social lifestyle development opportunities. They act as a resource and confidant to youth when personal and education problems occur and may coordinate meetings with Southwest Key staff and parents, teachers, and other natural supports. Mentors also provide transportation for mentees to and from mentoring activities, as needed.

For more information about becoming a mentor email their Volunteer Connect at volunteer@swkey.org. To learn more about Youth Mentoring or any other Southwest Key program, please visit our website at https://southwestkey.org/.

KEENAN'S KIDS FOUNDATION

Keeping children safe is the primary mission of Keenan’s Kids Foundation, an established non-profit located in Atlanta, Ga. The Foundation is seeking community support for a special project called the Murphy House Project, named after a local family who has adopted 23 special needs children; many with Down syndrome, autism, blindness and other fragile medical conditions.

Currently 17 Murphy children live in the home that the Foundation and the community helped to build five years ago. Keenan’s Kids Foundation’s needs your help in securing the future of the Murphy children by retiring the mortgage on the home so trust funds can be established for each child, thereby, eliminating the possibility of these siblings ever being separated. We are launching a “Dining to Donate” campaign in October, nationally recognized as Down syndrome month. Additionally, by shopping on-line using the iGive app at over 1400 participating stores, you are also helping support this cause.

For participating restaurants and to find out ways you can volunteer to help with these two campaigns, please email mhp@keenanskidsfoundation.com or contact Ms. Sloane at 404-223-5437.

Please help us keep this very special family together forever.

HARTSFIELD-JACKSON ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

We are in the process of recruiting new volunteers and would love to provide the opportunity for Clayton students to come out and work at the airport.

The Hartsfield Host Volunteer Program has been an integral part of the Department of Aviation since 1996, and provides an invaluable service to our airport community. Our volunteers relay information to our customers pertaining to every area of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (H-JAIA), including ground transportation, where to eat and shop, airlines, baggage claim, security issues, and even where to go for comfort and spiritual guidance. They are considerably knowledgeable about the Atlanta area and are often asked to provide information about conferences/conventions and other events taking place in the city, hotels, and what to do during a layover. They also provide escorts when needed and assist our Landside Operations team during irregular operations. We would provide the students with the necessary training, a uniform, MARTA or parking passes, and bottled water. We ask that our volunteers work one four-hour shift per week.

Students who are interested can go to www.atl.com/community/airport-volunteer-program/ and fill out an application online, or contact:

Volunteer Office at 404-382-2189 or volunteer@atl.com.

PEOPLE WITH A PURPOSE

People With A Purpose Clubhouse is a non-profit organization that is membership-based; where those living with persistent mental illness come to rebuild their lives. Participants—who are called members, not patients—share ownership and responsibility for the success of the organization. They work in a unique partnership with a small staff, building on strengths instead of focusing on illness. The Clubhouse provides an accepting place to spend the day, valuable work to perform within the organization, opportunities to socialize with friends and co-workers, and access to employment within the wider community. Membership is for life and provides ongoing support.
We have recently partnered with our Hometown Atlanta Braves and will be at the New Braves Suntrust Park Stadium for this amazing opportunity.

We are looking for energetic, engaging, customer friendly volunteers to aide us in fundraising for a New Clubhouse for our members. Volunteer training sessions are being scheduled for those who want to take advantage of this fun and fulfilling opportunity to contribute to a great cause by assisting us with food and beverage services at our dedicated concession stand. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! For additional info, please contact Vivia Collins at (404) 396-5390 or email her directly at vivia.collins@peoplewithapurpose.org. You will need to fill out a volunteer application form, go thru 4 hours volunteer training ONCE and get an alcohol permit (Cobb County). We look forward to hearing from you very soon.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF GEORGIA

Junior Achievement has volunteer opportunities at our Chick-fil-a Foundation Discovery Center. This would be a wonderful way to engage Clayton State University staff and students as JA aims to help middle school students see the relevance of their education as it relates to financial literacy and work readiness. Junior Achievement’s Chick-fil-A Foundation Discovery Center houses two interactive simulations, JA BizTown and JA Finance Park. These simulations provide metro Atlanta middle school students with a dynamic learning experience designed to enhance financial literacy and build skills for professional success. During their visit, volunteers guide students as they progress through the program and discover how these vital skills with help prepare them for future success.

Southern Crescent Sports Foundation (H.O.P.E. Park- Helping Other People Excel)

Southern Crescent Sports Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is building a 26 acre park in Clayton County open to everyone in the Southern Crescent area. This park when completed, will have eight ball fields, one of which will be a competitive wheelchair softball field to help reintegrate wounded veterans and citizens into competitive sports. This field will double as a Miracle League field so that children and adults with special needs can play baseball in a safe environment. There will be a 30,000 square foot all accessible playground, a community garden, a certified commercial kitchen, and youth work development programs.

We are in search of volunteers to help us build the park. There are many opportunities to help throughout the year.

SOUTHWEST KEY PROGRAMS

Southwest Key Programs works with community partners to recruit a culturally diverse population of committed mentors. Our organization utilizes our extensive community network to recruit mentors from within the youth’s surrounding community reaching out to extended family, neighbors, teachers, coaches, religious and community leaders and employers.
