The College of Business has partnered with the United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which offers free tax preparation assistance to eligible taxpayers using forms 1040EZ, 1040A and simple 1040s.

“The VITA program at Clayton State University and the College of Business is our way to connect with and assist our local community in a impactful way,” says Dr. Anthony Hannah, assistant professor of accounting, who is leading the program this year. “The students look forward to working with the public, answering their tax questions and preparing returns.”

Social distancing will be enforced, and both volunteers and taxpayers will be required to wear masks during the process. CDC guidelines for COVID-19 will be observed.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, seating in the building lobbies, as well as in the classrooms where tax preparations are performed, are extremely limited.  The number of taxpayer returns that can be processed during the 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. timeframe is also limited.  Individuals are encouraged to arrive early to sign in for available timeslots.  If the socially distanced seating capacity is reached in the building, individuals may be asked to remain in their vehicles until their appointment time.

If the maximum processing capacity for a Saturday session has been reached, individuals may be permitted to sign up for an appointment on another Saturday. Please check the VITA website for updates on appointment availability.

Taxpayers must be in one of three eligible groups to participate in the program:  people who generally have an income of $65,000 or less; persons with disabilities; or limited English-speaking taxpayers.

Those interested in receiving this assistance must bring the following items:

  • Photo identification
  • Social security cards for themselves, their spouse, and dependents
  • Birthdates for primary, secondary, and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1009-R, from all employers

  • Day care provider identifying number
  • Total amount paid for day care
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state income tax returns if possible,
  • Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit
