B.S. Biology Secondary Teacher Education

Why major in Biology with a Secondary Education Track?

There is an increasing need for effective K-12 teachers in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). President Obama's "Educate to Innovate" campaign is dedicated to increasing the STEM achievements for American students, and this initiative includes the preparation of new STEM teachers, illustrating the importance of K-12 science teachers in the future of our country's STEM achievements. Our Biology major with the Secondary Education Track will prepare students to teach biology at the secondary school level (grades 6-12). Our Biology majors develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of the field of biology and amass a variety of laboratory skills (Program Outcomes). Students completing the B.S. in Biology Secondary Teacher Education program will be career-ready at graduation and will be part of the future of increased STEM achievement of American students in the coming decades.

The B.S. in Biology Secondary Teacher Education Degree

Along with providing a required core of classes in biology, this program includes a rigorous background in chemistry, physics, and education that will allow our students to succeed in the secondary education career field. Questions about the Secondary Education Track should be directed to Dr. Emily Harbert.
