What is Biology MAT?

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Biology is designed for individuals who hold a bachelors degree in Biology or a related area and/or have a provisional teaching certificate in the discipline. This program will prepare students to receive a master's degree and provide them the opportunity to become certified to teach secondary-level (grades 6-12) Biology.

This program offers evening courses with student teaching during the Spring semester. Faculty in the Department of Biology teach the Biology content while faculty in the Department of Teacher Education teach the professional education courses. MAT candidates must complete 18 hours of graduate-level education courses, 3 hours of content methods course, and 15 hours of graduate-level biology courses with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. The curriculum is typically completed over four consecutive semesters.
