Things To Know:
All interested university members should first contact the director, Stacey Houghton, to schedule an appointment to audition. Music majors who have prior permission from the instructor do not need to audition. Auditionees should prepare a short written etude or composition in jazz style to demonstrate reading and stylistic ability. The auditionee should also prepare a blues or appropriate jazz standard on which to improvise. Pianists and guitarists will also be asked to demonstrate the ability to read chord changes and comp behind a soloist. Bass players should demonstrate the ability to improvise appropriate bass lines from a set of chord changes. Drummers should be able to exhibit jazz time patterns and fills in swing, Latin, ballad, and funk-rock styles. Sightreading may be included. Please contact the director with questions, or for suggested audition materials.
