The World Beloved
An evening of American choral music featuring Carol Barnett’s masterwork The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass.
The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass is a recent composition which combines elements of bluegrass and classical choral music into the structure of a traditional religious mass. Using the words of poet Martha Chamberlain, composer Carol Barnett creates a journey through both music styles and in her own words, “brought the solemnity of the classical-based Mass together with the downhome sparkle of bluegrass.” The performance will feature Clayton State University faculty and area bluegrass musicians as guest artists. In addition to Barnett’s Bluegrass mass, the evening will also include other American choral works by William Billings, Jeremiah Ingalls, and Alice Parker.
The Masterworks Chorus at Spivey Hall provides an opportunity for all university students, faculty, staff, and community members to sing and perform a variety of choral music. This ensemble performs each semester in Spivey Hall and often collaborates with choirs and orchestras from the surrounding community. The schedule of the Masterworks Chorus is designed to help ensemble members develop vocal and musical skills in an enjoyable environment with minimal constraints on time outside of rehearsal. The Masterworks Chorus combines high musical standards with an emphasis on building community and enriching the lives of chorus members and audiences alike.
