Sociology Department of Social Sciences
…I never knew that I could honestly enjoy learning new things or even enjoy school in general until I started to take sociology classes. I began to learn eye opening things that related to my own life; things that I wanted to go home and discuss with my family and friends. I actually began to become excited!.....
…Being in this field of study has given me a clear understanding about the way our society works. I’ve learned new concepts such as oppression and marginalization and these concepts I didn’t know about or care about or understand before have taken on whole new meanings in my life. I know that I cannot tell people what major to choose for their own lives but I will definitely go out on a limb and say that everyone should take a few sociology classes to open their eyes on exactly the way most of our families, our society and our world functions…..
…I learned in sociology that men are the ones who hold most of the power, the highest paid positions and are paid more money for holding the exact same positions that women hold. Before entering the field of sociology I would never have gotten the full understanding of how this really worked, but in being a student in this field I have come to understand this fully…..
…One of the most important things that being a sociology major has taught me is how to be a better parent. It has taught me a different way of raising my daughter; that I must teach her that she has no specific assignment or specific meaning to her life based on her skin color only. I have learned that I must not allow any forces that she may encounter to make her feel less than or defeated before she pursues any dream that she may have. I have learned the importance of teaching her our history and what being marginalized and oppressed means. Being a student in sociology has taught me that I must teach my daughter that her role in life doesn’t have to be defined by society or that her master status doesn’t have to end at African American female…..
…The one thing I have learned for sure being in this field is that my work has to lie within the oppressed societies. The powerful and the elite have enough help and funds in the continuous control over everything. It has become my job and the job of my fellow sociologists to show the oppressed that they too can hold the power and control over their own lives…..
…..The study of sociology has given me the will to want to be a servant. All in all I have learned that one has to be a servant in order to be a good leader. I would love to give people this knowledge and a sense of hope and I believe that I can inspire others through my words and my story. Because of the knowledge that I have received it becomes my job and my duty to pass this along to others. Trying and reaching one is better than not trying at all…..
