Sociology Department of Social Sciences
…The knowledge I have gained from being a sociology major has really impacted my life at home, at work, and even in my marriage. I have been able to take at least one thing from every sociology class that I have taken and use it in my everyday life. Studying sociology has opened up my eyes to discuss social issues amongst my peers. It has given me the courage to speak up instead of being timid. It has allowed me to learn about other people’s cultures and their way of life. It has given me a sense of self-worth that I did not possess before because I now understand more of who I am and what my purpose is here on earth. The study of sociology has taught me concepts and perspectives that I can speak about and articulate to my family, my peers and the young people that I interact with. It has also taught me that I am not perfect and that I am human and will make mistakes. But most importantly, I can learn from those mistakes. My life has changed for the better and for the long haul as a result of being in this major…..
…In learning about social stratification I was made aware of a situation where poor people were living in homes where sewage was spewed all out in the yard, drugs and prostitution were a major source of income for some, and the conditions of the schools that the children attended each day were run down. At this moment I really knew that I had to make a difference in someone’s life no matter who they are and no matter what their situation is. I decided to make this a personal goal and a personal commitment for myself and from that day to this day, I have strived to do just that. I am thankful that I can be an example to others and contribute to society by helping those that are in great need and despair…..
…When I first started school at Clayton State University, I was a person with a fear of failing in my quest to get my degree. However being a Sociology major has given me a boldness in speaking up and out on issues that affect society and given me a greater sense of self-worth. This field has allowed me to meet other people who have the same vision and purpose as I do and in meeting those people I realized that if we can come together as one, meeting and agreeing on one thing, then we can accomplish anything we put our mind to. Through the major I have learned to not judge others because judging does not help. What helps is when you have some type of compassion and concern for those that cannot help themselves…..
…Through the study of Sociology I can begin to teach young adolescents to be inspired, and to help others through compassion, love and solidarity. I have come to the realization that I am an intellectual black female who is striving to make a change in this world along with other social change agents. Receiving my degree in Sociology will lead me down a path to educate and inspire young adolescents about the social struggles in society…..
