Sociology Department of Social Sciences
…Looking back on when I took my first Introduction to Sociology course, I realize that it was the beginning of the building of a foundation for me. Being in this class caused me to begin seeing the world in a different way than how I had previously viewed it. As I read more and more articles that enlightened me about society, I was convinced that Sociology was the major for me. I can now say that as a result of being in this major, it has drastically changed the way I view the world. I am able to think more critically about the social issues in society. The fact that I have grown into a more serious critical thinker is one of the many contributions I have gained by being in the Sociology program at Clayton State University….
…Talk slavery in America and people will turn off and ask the question of “how and why are we still talking about this?” Continue talking about the poor and the educational levels that different for so many children throughout this country and the gap that exists between the haves and the have-nots and people will turn a blind eye or a deaf ear to you. Before becoming a Sociology major, I too was one of these people, but being in this major has broadened my views and taught me to think on these things in a much deeper and more critical way. I have learned through sociology courses about feminist theory and the ability to see things from a woman’s perspective. I have learned through race and ethnicity classes that being exposed to different cultures can create more diversity in your relationships and/or friendships in a very positive way. I came to realize that every course I was taking in this major would begin to intertwine with one another. I can truly say that each course I have taken while being a Sociology major has helped me to better understand society as a whole….
…Before coming into sociology as my major, I did not really have much to say about the issues of our society. I would listen but not really have a point of view and not speak up. Now that I have completed my course of study in sociology I am able to use the knowledge I have gained in the courses I have taken and form an educated opinion about topics and social issues being discussed. I notice that I am able to enlighten others from the knowledge I have gained….
…The field of sociology has led me to want to serve others. I want to be able to have an impact on teenagers and the next generation of this world. As sociology majors we have to know that we can make a change in the lives of others. We may not be able to completely change the way society works but we can change some people in society and this can lead them to change others around them. I feel that as a sociology major I have been charged to help make that change….
…As I venture off into society I feel the sociology program at Clayton State University has made me better equipped to deal with the ups and downs of society. Change doesn’t happen overnight and you can’t hit a home run every time you step up to the plate. But through studying and practicing you eventually figure out how to hit the pitch and drive it a long way. Through the knowledge I have gained in this program I am able to become a social change agent to the point that I can tell the next one up to the plate how to handle the pitches that life will through their way and this is my goal in life: to pass the knowledge I have gained down to the next generation and begin to equip them for the hurdles that life may bring their way. Just like the knowledge I have gained in the field of sociology has developed me into the person I am today, I can also pass that knowledge on to others in order to help them grow in their journey of life….
…There have been many times when I have held back in class when I should have spoken up, afraid of starting something I could not finish. I have now learned that there are times when certain things need to be said, especially if things don’t seem right or just. This is what my education in the field of sociology has given me – a voice that can be a scholar of society and a voice for society with the tools to help fix it through the education we have gained. There is no telling what kind of impact I might have on others when I now speak up and voice my opinions. I could actually change someone else’s opinion on the true social issues taking place in society. As a sociologist I believe our voice is our power to really become the social change agents we are destined to be. After all, in order to make a change, a voice cannot be silent but must be heard…..
…The mindset I have gained through being a sociology major is allowing me to help build up others and make them equipped with the tools they will need to help society. Teaching others how to think critically can be life changing and will continue to be one of my goals. When we embark on changing ourselves, at the same time we can change someone else. This change may not be popular with everyone, but being in the field of sociology has taught me that we are not in the business to please others, but we are in the business to help others….
…Sociology has taught me that I can help others see that this world is full of so many opportunities that can be attained if one would just learn how to think critically. Now that I have been given what I need to think critically as a sociologist, I can continue my journey in developing into an agent of change for my society. Through this major I have become really amazed about how far my mind has come and how much of an impact I can and will have on society. I can only hope to do the same for someone else….
