I. Unit Mission Statement
The School of Arts and Sciences provides the liberal
arts and sciences foundation for all University baccalaureate programs.
Whether completing courses in the general education core or seeking A&S
degrees in natural science, social science, humanities, music, education or
Integrative Studies, students learn to examine their world, appreciate their
culture, better understand themselves, and prepare for their futures.
Sub-Unit Mission Statements:
Department of Language and Literature: The
mission of the Department of Language and Literature is to provide
comprehensive English, foreign Language, and Language Arts education and
public service to the residents of the community region and the Southern
Crescent of metropolitan Atlanta.
Department of Communicative Arts and Integrative
Studies: The mission of the Department of Communicative Arts and
Integrative Studies is to provide comprehensive communication,
philosophy, media studies, theater, and integrative studies education
and public service to the residents of the community region and the
Southern Crescent of metropolitan Atlanta.
Department of Music: The mission of the
Department of Music is to provide comprehensive music education and
public service to the residents of the community region and the Southern
Crescent of metropolitan Atlanta.
Department of Natural Sciences: The mission
of the department of natural sciences is to provide comprehensive
science education and public service to the residents of the community
region and the Southern Crescent of metropolitan Atlanta.
Department of Social Sciences: The mission
of the Department of Social Sciences is to provide comprehensive Social
Science, History, Political Science, Criminal Justice, and Human
Services education and public service to the residents of the community
region and the Southern Crescent of metropolitan Atlanta.
Department of Psychology: The mission of the
Department of Psychology is to provide comprehensive psychology
education and public service to the residents of the community region
and the Southern Crescent of metropolitan Atlanta.
Department of Teacher Education:
The mission of the Department of Teacher Education is to provide
comprehensive middle grades education and public service to the
residents of the community region and the Southern Crescent of
metropolitan Atlanta.

II. Statement of Long-Range Goals
Arts & Sciences Goals
for FY 05-06
- Increase the number of baccalaureate programs and
develop our first graduate program available for Clayton State University students in the
School of Arts & Sciences:
a.
B.A.
in Theater. This degree will attract many of the metro Atlanta area students
who are now being displaced by the closure of the theater program at Georgia
State University. In addition, the demand for this degree from the service
area population has been very large indeed.
b.
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. This degree will provide an
academic path for on and off campus students who have completed a
baccalaureate degree. Target group will be those who have an undergraduate
in a professional or technical area.
2.
Increase the number of
full-time faculty in the various departments in the School of Arts and
Sciences. Also increase the number of support staff. To support increase in
faculty and student.
3.
Improve student recruitment in all A&S degree areas.
4. Develop
fundraising plan.
5. Reduce
percentage of part time faculty by adding additional full time faculty and
increase support and compensation for the part time faculty we do employ.
6. Prepare
for National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
7. Renovation
of existing classroom space into office to house newly hired faculty

Line-Item Budget for Cygnet, the Clayton State University Creative Writing Publication
Individual Departmental Goals for FY
05-06:
1.
Department of Language and
Literature: The Department of
Language and Literature’s main goal will be to plan, submit, and implement
new graduate courses in English as an integral part of the Master of Arts in
Liberal Studies degree program. With these increased curricular offerings
will come the need for additional faculty (including a new Department Head),
and this department will be examining these staffing needs on an ongoing
basis.
2.
The Department of
Communicative Arts and Integrative Studies:
The department’s main goal for the
year will be to develop plan, submit, and implement new graduate courses in
Liberal Studies as an integral part of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies
degree program. In addition, the department will work on panning and
submitting a new undergraduate degree in Theater (B.A.), and modifying the
Integrative Studies program to further attract and retain students in the
School of Arts and Sciences and the University as a whole. With these
increased curricular offerings will come the need for additional faculty
(including filling the Interim department Head position), and this
department will be examining these staffing needs on an ongoing basis.
3.
The Department of Music:
The Department of Music’s main
goals will be to insure that the Music Education degree program gains
approval at the PSC and that the entire department gains NSM accreditation.
In addition this department will plan, submit, and implement new graduate
courses in Music as an integral part of the Master of Arts in Liberal
Studies degree program. With these increased curricular offerings will come
the need for additional faculty, and this department will be examining these
staffing needs on an ongoing basis.
4.
The Department of Natural
Sciences: The Department of
Natural Sciences’ main goal will be to increase enrollment in its current
Biology degree and to plan minors in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In
addition the Department will be involved in the planning and development of
a construction plan for a new Science building. With these increased
curricular offerings will come the need for additional faculty, and this
department will be examining these staffing needs on an ongoing basis.
5.
The Department of Social
Sciences: The Department of
Social Sciences’ main goals will be to plan, submit, and implement new
graduate courses in History as an integral part of the Master of Arts in
Liberal Studies degree program. In addition, the department will need to
increase staffing in its new Criminal Justice and Political Science
programs. With these increased curricular offerings will come the need for
additional faculty, and this department will be examining these staffing
needs on an ongoing basis.
6.
The Department of
Psychology: The Department of
Psychology’s main goal for the year will be to prepare for even more
increased enrollment in the undergraduate Psychology degree program. With
these increased curricular offerings will come the need for additional
faculty (including filling the Interim department Head position), and this
department will be examining these staffing needs on an ongoing basis.
7.
The Department of Teacher
Education: The Department of
Teacher Education’s main goal for this year is to continue working towards
NCATE accreditation, and to accommodate more students into the teacher
education program(s). With these increased curricular offerings will come
the need for additional faculty, and this department will be examining these
staffing needs on an ongoing basis.
