Unit Mission Statement
The mission of the Clayton
State Intercollegiate Athletic Program is to promote the education and
development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation.
Clayton State has a commitment to high standards and the principle that
athletics serve as an integral part of education.
To achieve
its goal, the Clayton State Intercollegiate Athletic Program pursues the
following objectives for its students and programming.
1. Accept
the responsibility to become an effective, contributing member of society.
2.
Perform as a positive role model on the campus and in the wider community.
3.
Fulfill academic responsibilities while progressing steadily toward meeting
the requirements for a degree.
4.
Maintain eligibility for participation in every athletic contest.
5. Make
every effort to participate at the highest level necessary to insure that
Clayton State is competitive in whatever conference it is a member of.
The
intercollegiate athletic program shall:
1. Ensure
that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the total educational
offering, under the control of those responsible for the administration of
the institution.
2.
Encourage the broadest possible student involvement in the program, with
equal opportunity afforded to everyone, regardless of race or gender.
3.
Maintaining high ethical standards through commitment to the principle of
following the national association rules and requirements regarding
eligibility, scheduling, recruitment, and competition.
4.
Evaluate the athletic program in terms of the educational purpose of the
institution.
5. Engage
in competition with other institutions having similar athletic and academic
philosophies and policies.
6. Ensure
fiscal accountability and responsibility.
7. Be a
part of the advancement program of Clayton State, cooperating in the areas
of marketing, recruitment, and fund-raising.
8. Help
develop a sense of community and pride within the Clayton State family,
which includes students, faculty, staff, and community.
The
intercollegiate athletic program shall be evaluated by the following
criteria:
1. The
academic success of its student-athlete. Specifically, the student-athlete
should be graduating at a comparable rate to that of the normal student
body.
2. The
athletic teams should be competitive with those of its conference. It is
noted that to accomplish this, the program should be provided the resources
equal to those of its conference peers.
3. The
overall impact of the program on the campus and community, as could be
evaluated by the participation of the students, faculty, staff, and
surrounding community in supporting the program through its gifts and
attendance at athletic events.
4. The
opportunity afforded to all students, with special emphasis placed on the
adherence to Title IX, EADA requirements in regard to gender equity.

II. Statement of Long-Range Goals (3-5 years)
NCAA legislation NO. 17 to
bylaw 20.10.3, created at the January 2002 NCAA Convention, requires an
addition of at least two sports to our programming here at Clayton State.
This will mean an addition of approximately thirty to forty new
student-athletes over the next three years. Planning for these additional
programs include:
1. A
decision on what two programs to add to the present intercollegiate
offerings. A committee made up of students, faculty, and staff will be
organized to make this decision.
2.
Funding for these programs will need to be generated over the next three
years by either an increase in enrollment or an increase in the student
athletic fee.
3. Our
present facilities will have to be upgraded, renovated, and/or added to
facilitate this added programming.

Progress Report on Objectives for FY 2002
|
Objectives |
Current Status: |
Intended actions for balance of year: |
Implications for future objectives and for long-range plans: |
|
1.
Improve standing of all teams in the Peach Belt Conference. |
Three out of four teams finished their fall season ranked higher in the
PBC than last year. |
Anticipate four remaining teams to improve ranking at end of PBC season. |
Improved programs will make it easier to both recruit new
student-athletes and influence external fund raising efforts. |
|
2.
Improve the academic standing of the student-athletes involved on our
teams. |
Our
overall cumulative GPA declined from a 2.69 to a 2.64. |
Discussions are on-going with the Center for Academic Success. |
To
bring our overall program GPA to over a 3.00 in the next five years. |
|
3.
Improve upon the overall retention of our student-athletes from one year
to the next. |
We are pleased that our retention of non senior
student athletes is anticipated to be 82% as compared to last years
retention of 72%. |
Encourage the return of the student- athletes currently enrolled, as
well as recruit those that better fit Clayton State University. |
This brings us closer to our objective to have a high retention, high
GPA, high graduation rate program. |
|
4.
Identify additional sports offerings to be implemented by Fall of 2005. |
We have decided for the time being to expand our
Men's & Women's Track and Field program. |
We do anticipate the addition of these two sports
by the 2006-07 year. |
This will allow us to meet the minimum championship
requirement numbers without committing too many dollars which could
delay our implementation of both Men's Baseball and Women's Fast Pitch
Softball. It will take an approximate enrollment of 6500 and an
athletic fee of approximately $115 to generate the revenues needed to
operate those two sports. |
