I.           Unit Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for Academic Success (CAA) is to enhance student learning through a variety of personalized academic services and retention strategies for all Clayton State University students.

  • Providing individualized assistance offers student one-on-one consultations with peer tutors and professional educators in various subjects. 

  • Providing an environment supportive of professional practices, group interaction and collaborative learning.

  • Providing access to multimedia instructional materials appropriate for a variety of disciplines and learning styles.

  • Providing computerized skill-building resources, in both stand-alone and Internet formats (Skills Bank, etc.).

  • Providing skills-oriented courses, labs, and workshops (Math Reviews, Regents’ Workshops, ESL workshops, APA,  MLA, and Turabian documentation reviews,  Peer Tutoring Course).

  • Support and implement other departments’ academic programs and grants (Supplemental Instruction, SOS-Nursing, Business Statistics, etc.)

  • Focusing on retention strategies for the University such as Faculty Student Referral Form, Learner Feedback Form and CAA Summary, ESL assistance along with the aforementioned programs and resources.

 

II.         

Statement of Long-Range Goals (3-5 years).  Note: the goals are indicated in the context of an assumption of steadily increasing student enrollment, which will put increasing demands on the services of the CAA.

  1. Developing more student intervention endeavors focused on retention strategies such as implementing the Supplemental Instruction program.

  2.  Expanding the Peer Tutoring program in number of students served and scope or coursework included.

  3. Expanding the Peer Tutoring program to focus on Core Academics and Writing across the Curriculum.

  4. Developing a Writing Lab to serve student writing needs in all courses.

  5. Developing an ESL program to help the University serve an increasingly diverse student body.

  6. Building more organized programming relationships with other Clayton State University departments in order to more effectively assist them with their academic assistance needs—grant support, etc.

Evaluation of Success and Implications for future goals and objectives

Evening studies coordinator: Hire an evening studies coordinator to administer evening programs, develop CAA website, and develop databases for record keeping and data analysis. Coordinator should have a bachelor’s degree in English or mathematics, supervisory and/or teaching/tutoring experience.

 

 

Salary:

32,000-36,000

 

Develop a Writing Lab.

 

 

Fiscal: Writing-Lab related supplies (texts, software, tutor-training materials); equipment, furniture.

Human: Salaries for staff, graduate and peer tutoring costs=@ $10,000 per year.

Physical: Relocate the Lab space

 

Developed a small writing lab tutoring and resource area, procured some supplies, trained one writing tutor, set up

Expand Peer Tutoring program.

Strategies

1.Increase peer involvement through student marketing for tutors on campus. 

2. Certify more tutors (academic and writing) through the Peer Tutoring course, Essentials of Peer Tutoring.

3. Market Peer Tutoring services for all students.

Peer Tutoring coordinator.

Fiscal:

Basic costs included in CAA line item for Supplies.

1. More students using Peer Tutoring.

2.More students trained and certified as     Peer Tutors.

3. Students obtaining help for their academic needs. 

4. Better retention for Clayton State University students.

Implement graduate student staff tutoring program.

Hire graduate students from area universities to supplement staff and peer tutoring. Must already hold a bachelor’s degree in tutoring area or in education.

Place advertisements to recruit graduate students on campuses in area universities with graduate programs and on MonsterTrak.com.

 

 

 

Human:
Salaries:  10 hours per week @ $10 per hour up to 20,000 per year.

 

Develop Supplemental Instruction program.

Support for University retention initiative and implementation of tightened suspension and readmission policies. Approved by CAPC in Spring 2003.

3. IN PROGRESS

FALL 2005 Start date

1. Use selected certified peer tutors to help selected students in at-risk courses.

2. Assess Clayton State University courses with high fail rates, etc. and collaborate with their instructors and department heads for SI development.

3.  Rick Reynolds, Director of the CAA, and Leslie Meadows, Peer Tutoring coordinator.

1.  Need line item for student pay for attending SI designated classes and course study groups.

2.  If the program expands will need a part-time or full-time coordinator-

$16,500.00, PT to $33,000.00, FT.

1. SI program initial implementation in several at-risk courses.

2. Better retention rates in SI at-risk courses.

3.  Expanding program to more at-risk courses.

Develop an ESL program

A formal ESL program would accommodate the increasing numbers of international students at Clayton State University.

2. Hire an English/ESL trained instructor for program development and expansion.

3. Develop ESL courses.

4. Integrate more ESL assistance for international students in all aspects of the CAA.

5. CAA director, CAA staff.

1. Hire a PT ESL instructor –16,500.

2. Develop ESL course in coordination with the departments and divisions across campus.

3. After an ESL program and curriculum is planned, purchase specific ESL software for course, workshop, and individual student use.

1. Better retention rates for international students.

2. Improved performance (grades, retention) in all Clayton State University courses where ESL issues exist.

Build relationships with divisions across Clayton State University. 

Develop more organized programming relationships with other Clayton State University departments. 

Acquire Title III, Federal Grants to fund collaborative Academic Service programs in the CAA..

1. Collaborate with Clayton State University academic departments about their individual needs for academic assistance by way of tutors, SI, grant support, and other needed programs.

2. Preplan with grant writers in other divisions who want to include the services of the CAA in personnel and services.

3.Collaborate to write the appropriate grants for student support services after reviewing designated academic service needs. Use all available CAA staff to contribute to the writing of these grants.

4. Implement grant-requested programs with appropriate new staff funded by the grants.

1.  Have CAA staff and resources included in grants written from other departments who want CAA assistance for their grant implementation.

2. Release time for CAA staff in order to write these grants.

 

1. Successful cooperation with the CAA and other departments will result in increased student attendance and assistance.

2. Expanded academic service programs for designated student populations will result in better college success.

3. Increased grant- sponsored academic programs will result in increased student performance in sponsoring departments.

 

Measurable outcomes:

Increased passing rates, GPA’s, and graduation rates.
