Continuing Education Suite 220
Elicia S. Collins currently serves as the Student Navigator under the Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant at Clayton State University within the School of Nursing. The Student Navigator is responsible for assisting students by providing academic assistance, counseling services and community contacts for both pre-nursing and nursing students. Furthermore, the Student Navigator assists in recruiting this same pool of students for online versions of the School of Nursing’s Academic Enhancement Program, Strategies of Success (SOS) I, II and III. Elicia S. Collins is a full-time faculty member committed to nursing student success.
The primary role of the Student Navigator is to assist nursing students with identifying barriers/stressors that may impede academic achievement. Once identified, the Student Navigator will refer students to the appropriate resources.
In addition to assisting students, the Student Navigator will work closely with faculty members to identify and track those students who may be at risk due to personal and/or academic barriers/stressors. The Student Navigator will correspond with a minimum of 150 nursing students over the three project years.
To determine if the needs of the students and conditions of the grant are being met, the Coordinator of Evaluation, Dr. Sue Odom, will develop an evaluative tool to assess both the students and faculty perception of the Student Navigator role. At the conclusion of each project year, the Coordinator of Evaluation will administer the evaluative tool to all nursing students and faculty that have participated in the project.
The purpose of the CSU School of Nursing mentoring program is to provide eligible minority and disadvantaged nursing students with mentoring support to help them be successful in completing nursing program requirements and passing the NCLEX. The mentor will provide guidance and support related to student goals, time management, and problem solving. The mentoring program contributes to the overall goal of the Nursing Workforce Diversity grant which is to increase diversity in the nursing workforce. A participation stipend is awarded. Please follow up with the Student Navigator for additional information (guidelines, criteria, etc).
Student scholarships will be provided to minority/disadvantaged nursing students achieving academic excellence and demonstrating financial need. Students who received mentee stipends are ineligible for the NWDG scholarship opportunities. Please follow up with the Student Navigator for additional information (guidelines, criteria, etc).
