Clayton State University held commencement exercises for graduate students on Tuesday, Dec. 11 in the Athletic Center. The separate ceremony for graduates was new this year, giving the students and their families a special opportunity to honor their academic achievements in master’s level programs.
“This is just the beginning of where you will be in a very short period of time,” said University President Dr. Tim Hynes. “I want to thank you for an extraordinary ceremony that celebrates your accomplishments.”
Graduates heard from Associate Provost Dr. Jill Lane about the qualities that make an individual decide to pursue an advanced degree.
“I believe each of us regardless of the discipline you have chosen have at least two things in common–curiosity and determination,” Lane said.
Curiosity, Lane said, grows out of a desire to find answers to the things that make someone ask why.
“Life is full of questions and, at times, we feel the need to explore those questions in order to make sense of what is going on around us,” she said. “Most of you, like myself, chose graduate school because one question or one professor somewhere along the way peaked your curiosity about your chosen field.”
That curiosity is fueled by willpower and a focus to succeed, which Lane said was demonstrated by those who were receiving their diplomas Tuesday evening.
“it is obvious by your presence here today that you have not failed, but instead you have taken the challenges, applied determination and navigated to the path to success,” Lane said.
Commencement was marked by a hooding ceremony, a symbol for students who have completed their master’s degrees. The orange and blue on the hood represented the Clayton State’s school colors.
The collar is fashioned with a color representing the field of study in which the degree was earned––Arts, white; Business, tan; Education, blue; Psychology, gold; Nursing, peach; and Healthcare pink or green.
“When we place the hood on you, we symbolize your disciple, your school, and on a more personal note, the curiosity and determination that have lead you on this path to begin with.
Lane ended with some parting words of advice to the graduates about reaching that next milestone on the path to their dreams.
“Never lose your sense of curiosity. Remain determined to strive to achieve all of the goals you set out to do.”
