Clayton State University Teacher Education major Misha Valmont (Stockbridge) was recently selected to participate in the annual Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education bus trip.
“The bus trip entails educators, administrators, business leaders, politicians, parents, and students traveling around Georgia to different schools who are achieving at high levels to see what's working in the classroom,” Valmont says. “These schools exemplify excellence in education.
“The trip was two-and-half days long and we visited several charter and public school. The schools were very culturally and socio economically diverse. Some were Title I distinguished schools and others were not. Regardless of their Title I status, these schools were performing at high levels.”
On the trip, participants had the opportunity to visit the classrooms and observe instruction. Student Ambassadors served as the tour guides.
“We were permitted to talk to the principal, students, and teachers to hear their perspectives on learning in the classroom,” she says. “Bus participants were able to see innovations in technology in the classroom. We also learned several different strategies to motivate children to learn regardless of their age, skin color, and social class. Lunch was provided by the school we were visiting and dinner was held at an off-site location.”
Being selected for this trip was meaningful to Valmont.
“I was excited and extremely grateful before I went on the trip,” she recalls. “After the first day, I was overwhelmed with joy and appreciation because I had been afforded the opportunity to meet some special individuals who are doing extraordinary things in education. As a future teacher, I was grateful to learn so much that will help me in my classroom. It was great to experience the diverse school settings and to witness the pride, passion, and motivation of the school as a whole. It also let me know that my professor felt comfortable entrusting me with the responsibility to represent Clayton State University.
“I'm going to try to attend the bus trip every year! It was a very memorable experience and it was a blessing for me to be able to attend this year's GPEE Bus Trip.”
