Spivey Hall’s “Clara” piano featured on new classical album

Spivey Hall’s Steinway & Sons concert grand piano, “Clara,” is making its international debut through the recent commercially released album Impromptu. Israeli-born pianist Shai Wosner recorded a mix of classical pieces from Dvorak, Chopin, Beethoven and Gershwin during recording sessions at Spivey Hall in May 2016.

“The sound of ‘Clara’ is already widely heard in recital performances by Spivey Hall pianists in broadcasts on American Public Media's radio program, Performance Today, but this is the first instance in which a CD made with ‘Clara’ at Spivey Hall has been released internationally by a commercial recording company,” says Spivey Hall Executive Director Sam Dixon.

Spivey Hall acquired the piano from the Steinway factory in Hamburg, Germany in February 2012. Dixon said Wosner’s manager approached him about the possibility of Wosner recording in Spivey Hall, which he was happy to do.

Wosner was particularly taken by the sound he could create with “Clara” in the Hall’s super acoustics, Dixon says.

“We're delighted by the increasing interest of classical musicians to record in Spivey Hall, and hope to welcome more artists and companies to make recordings in Spivey Hall in our coming seasons,” he added.
