Catherine Striplin, education manager for Clayton State University’s world-famous Spivey Hall, does an outstanding job bringing music education to thousands of school children from throughout the metro Atlanta area on an annual basis.
However, Striplin is herself a performing musician, recently drawing praise from Atlanta music critic, Pierre Ruhe, for her Capitol City Opera performance of a very challenging contemporary opera, Tartuffe, by Bay Area-composer Kirke Mechem, in "a piano reduction brilliantly realized by the multi-talented Catherine Striplin.”
Striplin, a native of Powder Springs, Ga., joined the Spivey Hall staff in July 2009. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University, majoring in music therapy. Following two additional years of studies at FSU, she was awarded her Master of Arts in Arts Administration in May 2009.
Concurrent with her graduate studies, Striplin was actively involved in performing arts management, holding such positions as stage manager and outreach coordinator of the Florida State Opera, and guest artist coordinator in the University’s Office of Public Relations. In 2008, she co-founded, with artistic director and conductor Kevin Fenton, the Festival Singers of Florida, a non-profit community chorus in Orlando, for which she served as artistic administrator while also assuming marketing, board development and fund-raising duties.
As Spivey Hall’s education manager, Striplin creates high-quality educational music programs, working in consultation with Executive & Artistic Director Sam Dixon and the Spivey Hall Education Committee. Her duties include engaging artists, developing and monitoring program budgets, devising and implementing marketing plans, overseeing the operations of all Education Department events, and evaluating program outcomes. As a senior Spivey Hall staff member, she also participates in strategic planning and oversees the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir Program administrative staff, the Education Assistant, workshop assistants, and volunteers.
