Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller, director of Opera and Vocal Studies at Clayton State University, reports that the Japanese edition of “What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body” is in print.
Zeller, one of three co-authors of the book on Body Mapping, recently received a copy of the Japanese edition, and turned it over to his colleague and musical collaborator, Clayton State Director of Keyboard Studies Dr. Michiko Otaki, to see how it compares to the English edition.
As for the original English edition, Zeller also reports that “What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body” has just been reviewed in the Journal of Singing, a publication of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the principal scholarly journal in the vocal field. The Journal of Singing review reads in part:
“`What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body’ is an excellent introduction to Body Mapping. It is an exceptional resource for the singer and teachers of singing to understand the anatomy and physiology of the voice. Singers and teachers unfamiliar with Body Mapping will find the text both a useful introduction to the process, and an all-purpose reference text for the anatomy and physiology of the body. The book is highly recommended.”
“What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body” (ISBN10: 1-59756-324-2, ISBN13: 978-1-59756-324-6) is an illustrated, 232-page soft cover practical resource published last year by San Diego-based Plural Publishing (http://www.pluralpublishing.com/), and authored by Dr. Melissa Malde, MaryJean Allen and Zeller.
“What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body” gives singers and their teachers a resource – from anatomy and physiology to body awareness – that helps them discover and correct misconceptions about the way their bodies are built and the way they function. The illustrated part of the book provides maps with detailed descriptions of the structures and movement used in breathing, phonation, resonance, articulation and gesture. And, the illustrations are supported by many exploratory exercises.
